NETHERLANDS AGRI FOOD AND HORTICULTURE SECTOR DESCRIPTION

The Netherlands is the world's second largest exporter of agricultural products, after the USA. Together with the USA and France, the Netherlands is one of the world's three leading producers of vegetables and fruit. It supplies a quarter of the vegetables that are exported from Europe. The agri-business is one of the driving forces behind the Dutch economy. At the same time, it poses challenges to the environment. In recent decades, farms became larger in scale and production became more intensive. As a result, fertilizers and manure made more impact on the countryside. Farming had to become more sustainable, the Dutch government said. Today, the Dutch agricultural sector is strongly focused on sustainability: it is a source of healthy, safe food that is produced with respect for the landscape and the environment.

Key Aspects and Strengths

The Dutch agricultural sector benefits from Holland's mild climate, flat and fertile soil and favourable geographical location at the heart of Europe. Expertise, infrastructure, the food processing industry, commerce and logistics are all on an extremely high level in the Netherlands. For decades, Dutch agriculture has succeeded in maintaining its lead over international competitors by continually investing in the renewal of agricultural production chains. Farmers and growers are full partners in the agricultural production chain. Their primary task is to produce food, flowers and plants with an optimum price/quality radio using innovative, socially responsible and sustainable methods. Despite tight profit margins, agricultural businesses have invested substantially in environmental protection and implemented improvements in animal welfare

Facts & Figures

Holland is the worlds 2nd largest exporter of agricultural products, after the USA. Together with the USA and France, Holland is one of the top 3 exporters of vegetables and fruit. The total value of Dutch agricultural exports was 75.4 billion euros in 2012. The Dutch agri-food industry contributes 52.5 billion euros of added value to Dutch GDP, and accounting for some 20% of Holland's total export value. The Netherlands is responsible for 22% of the worlds potato exports. The Netherlands has the second highest private R&D investment rate (as % of GDP) in agri-food in Europe. Four of the worlds top 25 food and beverage companies are Dutch and 12 have a major production site or R&D facilities in the Netherlands.

Two Dutch universities are in the European top 10 with regard to the number of publications on agri-food subjects. The Food Valley region, centered at Wageningen University and Research Center, is one of the most authoritative agri-food and nutrition research centres in Europe. NIZO food research owns the largest food testing pilot plant in Europe and is open to the entire food and ingredient industry. Holland is a global market leader in machinery for, for example, poultry and red meat processing, bakery and cheese production. Dutch agricultural entrepreneurs use efficient and sustainable production systems and processes, resulting in a productivity that is five times higher than the European average. There are some 50,000 farmers, or agricultural entrepreneurs, in the Netherlands, distributed over various crop and animal sectors such as arable (crop) farming, dairy farming and pig farming. The agricultural sector makes up approximately 10 percent of the Dutch economy and provides work and income for more than 660,000 people. More than half of the Netherlands' total land surface of 4.15 million hectares is used as farmland. 56 percent if used for arable and horticultural crops, 42 percent is permanent grassland and 2 percent is used for permanent crops. In 2010, there were more than 10,000 hectares of greenhouses in the Netherlands. Half of this, 5,000 hectares, was used for growing vegetables. Tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers are the biggest greenhouse crops. The most common arable crops are: potatoes (seed, starch and edible), winter corn, summer barley, sugar beets and onions. Of the one hundred most competitive products produced in the Netherlands, about half derive from the agriculture and food sector.

It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favourable and unfavourable to achieving that objective. The technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies. STRENGTHS 8 agro-climatic zones, wide varieties of soil, more than 40 major crops. Gujarat has got different climatic zones which are suitable for different crops So different crops like castor, cotton, wheat, millet, jute, sugarcane, onion, tomato, potato Are widely grown in different areas according to their climate and land type. Entrepreneurial farmers Gujarat has many entrepreneur of small and big scale in agriculture sector who have adopted scientific farming and done good research. Farmers in Gujarat are always eager to adopt new techniques if suit them. Favourable agriculture policy and Good governance Gujarat government is conducive to agriculture sector. Dominance in milk sector. GUJARAT COOPERATIVE MILK MARKETING FEDERATION (GCMMF) is India's largest food product marketing organization with annual turnover (2010-11) US$ 2.2 billion (Rs. 9,774 Crores). GCMMF is Milk Collection (Total - 2010-11) 3.45 billion litres and it has 5 lakh distribution centers in country. Use of solar energy for agriculture. Gujarat has 300 sunny days which is very useful for solar energy and that energy can be used in farm. WEAKNESSES Problem with climate change Gujarat has erratic rain fall so sometimes it impacts agriculture in the state. due to heavy rainfall or down pour crops are damaged. Low investment in agriculture sector As agriculture is not high yielding sector compared to other sectors and some Bottlenecks investment in agriculture is low compared to other sector. Low technology assimilation in agriculture sector Due to high cost of agricultural technology, equipment and lack of awareness of new techniques the technology assimilation is low in agriculture sector. Market fluctuation Due to high fluctuation in commodity prices in different season it is difficult for farmers to grow crops. Crop like guar gum sees high fluctuation in prices thats reason why farmers do not grow such highly volatile crops. OPPORTUNITIES Geneticaly modified crops and biotechnology Bt cotton is a famous GM and there are various crops in which high quality seeds can be developed.i.e maiza, millet biotechnology is also an impotant area in which new development will result in high yielding crops and new seeds. Horticulture development Gujarat has 20 lakh hectare of wasteland which can be used for irrigation purpose and majority of it can be utilised for horticulture purpose. As per statistics of 2005-06 by the National Horticulture Board, Gujarat accounts for 21% of chikoo, 20% of onion, 17% for lemon, 14% for papaya and 13% for banana out of total horticulture crop production of the country. In terms of productivity, onion and potato are the best in the country whereas banana is second followed by mango, tomato in the third position and guava, lemon and papaya at the fourth spot. A rupee invested in agriculture fetches return of Rs 1.2, the same investment in animal husbandry fetches Rs 1.8 whereas the same investment in Horticulture fetches Rs 2.

The Mission is being implemented in 15 potential districts and covers 10 important crops of the state viz. mango, chikoo, amla, banana, papaya, lime, cumin, fennel, flowers, medical and aroma crops. Agri export zone Government of Gujarat and government of India have proposed some Agri export Zone which are specifically set up for export of agro products. Value added processing based on local resources Natural resources based opportunities: natural food colors, medicinal herbs extraction, tree oil based bio-pesticides, Food Processing enzymes and so on. Organic farming: Special food processing Zone and Big Market for agro product Mega Food Park Scheme of India (MFPS) MFPS is expected to facilitate the achievement of the Vision 2015 of Ministry of food Processing Industries to raise the processing of perishables in the country from the existing 6% to 20%, value addition from 20% to 35% and the share in global food trade from 1.5% to 3% by the year 2015. The present scheme/benefits of Mega Food Park of Government of India will be extended to the Mega Agribusiness Parks be developed in Gujarat over the next 3 years. Agri/horticulture infrastructure projects: cold storage, fresh fruits and vegetables pack house, mechanized grain handling and storage at port, Food Parks, terminal markets irradiation centers. Agro processing Industries Lack of agro processing facilities in the state for produced crop is a challenge so agro processing industries can be set up for value addition. Farm automation and modern farming New techniques in farming through innovation and use of automation for both farm and animal husbandry can be developed. THREATS Inadequate and erratic nature of rainfall As agriculture in Gujarat is mainly dependent on rain so erratic nature of rain causes many problems in agriculture by ruining crops during in down pour and drought. Slow growth of farm mechanization Due to low income of farmers and high cost of technology for small farmers farm mechanization has been slow in the state. Cold chain management (Conserving quality in vegetable) About 30 per cent of horticulture produce of Gujarat goes waste and the region is only able to process 3 per cent of its total output. This is because there are not enough cold chains in Gujarat. In advanced countries, about 70 per cent of their horticulture produce is immediately processed as per an estimate. In order to improve processing facilities Gujarat needs efficient cold chains where western countries with expertise in cold chain can invest in Gujarat. Irrigation system and equipment 70% of the agriculture in Gujarat is rain fed and national percentage is 50% but due to erratic nature of south west monsoon sometimes it suffers from drought. To reduce the dependency on rain Gujarat needs to improve its irrigation system which can be done through water management and strong canal network. The Netherlands is expert in water management so Gujarat can avail help of Then Netherlands to solve this problem. Soil management Good agricultural practices maintain or improve soils. Soil is fundamental to agriculture and a well-managed soil improves performance of crops and livestock. However, soils become less productive if eroded by wind and water, compacted from improper use of machinery on the land, or damaged by inappropriate fertilisation or irrigation. Eroded soil also creates problems in watercourses and is a major cause of eutrophication and siltation.

Cattle feeding and nutrition management Animal protein in the form of milk, egg, meat etc. is an important component of protein requirement of human beings. Per capita availability of animal protein of the world is 25 gm/day that of india is only 10.8 gm/day . To meet the requirement of shortfall Government Of India is planning to have comprehensive policy on livestock sector of the nation as a whole to achieve target of at least 20 gm./day/head by the end of the next decade. This opens viable business opportunities for the countries which have high protein availability Animal husbandry technology exchange and promotion Indians major handicap is that, out of 199 million cattle (livestock),only 18% are well defined into proper Indian breeds. The rest of them are categorized as NonDescript or local (desi)cattle, which yield a far less quantity of milk, depriving the poor village farmers of more deserving cash rewards. About 70% of cattle are owned by landless/small farmers. At present, only 20% of cattle throughout the country are covered by Artificial Insemination services. This trend will continue if traditional breeding methods are allowed to continue. Therefore, use of frozen semen and Artificial insemination technologies are inevitable to improve genetic potential of the Indian cattle and buffalo by using germ plasm from the best indian breeds and also Exotics breed as per breeding policy of the state. Cattle fodder quality management In India there is a need to incorporate fodder crops into the farming system and establish a practical feeding programme based on planted fodder and crop residues. Since the land available for crop and fodder production is shrinking, to meet the nutritional requirements of animals there is a pressing need to increase the bioavailability of the feeds and fodders using chemical, biological and biotechnological approaches. This is an opportunity for experts in cattle fodder quality management. Milk processing and research Gujarat processes only 15% of total milk production which is low compared to other parts of the world. Here Netherlands can help in increasing the percentage of processing. Technology in milk processing can be used in Gujarat.
