Name: Kara Wenberg Lesson Title: Where does it go?

Context: Students will be learning about punctuation when using quotation marks. They will learn where periods, commas, and other punctuation marks go within commas as well as before quotation marks. Primary Instructional Objective and Common Core State Standard: - Overall Objective: Apply quotation mark rules to direct quotes in their writing - SWBAT: Identify where quotation marks and other punctuation goes in a sentence - SWBAT: Demonstrate their knowledge by placing quotation marks and punctuation correctly in a sentence - SWBAT: Appreciate the usage of commas - CCSS: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.6.2a Use punctuation (commas, parentheses, dashes) to set off nonrestrictive/parenthetical elements. Materials/Technology Resources required: 1. Post-it Notes 2. Poster board 3. Journals (students have) 4. Pencils/Pens (students have) Time: 50 minutes Instructional Procedures/Steps: Introduction: Students will come into class with a Do Now assignment on the board. They will be asked two questions about quotation marks and punctuation when using them. After they have a few minutes to get their answers down we will have a brief class discussion where students will share their answers. 1. What are quotation marks used for? 2. When punctuating a sentence with quotation marks does the punctuation at the end of what is being said go on the inside of the quotation mark or on the outside? -After the discussion students will be given a piece of poster board with their sentence on it and with the post-it notes that have the punctuation marks on them. The post-its will contain a beginning quotation mark and the other an ending quotation mark. The others will have a comma and then last index card will have a period, comma, exclamation or question mark. This will lead to our class activity. Briefing: I will hand out a sheet about quotation marks. We will go through it as a class with a powerpoint to ensure that they have a foundation to begin their activity. Activity: Once students have their sentences they will begin punctuating their sentences. The students will then trade sentences with a partner and analyze the sentence together deciding where the beginning and ending quotation marks go as well as the other punctuation marks. Once each pair is finished putting the punctuation where they think it

belongs they will then move into groups of 4 and they will trade sentences with the other pair. They will correct, if it is needed, the other pairs sentence or decide that it is correct. Once students have gone over their sentences within their groups they will go around the class and share their original sentences. If they put a punctuation mark in the wrong place and the other pair in their group caught it they must explain their mistake and why it was wrong. Closing: I will give students a handout that has the answers to all of the sentences as they complete their exit ticket. The exit ticket will be to write one new thing they learned about the use of quotation marks. If applicable please write one thing they liked about the class activity and/or one thing that they disliked about the activity. They will hand me their papers as they leave class. Evaluation: I will assess the students understanding of the lesson by listening to their reasoning of where they put their quotation and punctuation marks in their sentences and if they got something wrong, why it was wrong. Accommodations: In Period 2 and 3 there are three students with hearing impairments. To better help these students I will wear the sound amplifiers as I introduce and explain the activity to the class. As each group shares their sentences, the students that speak will also where the amplifier. Appendix: A. Punctuation Marks
