GeMin Expo. It should be noted that one of the 3 photos of the
students of these schools took the first prize among the 22
submitted photographs - after a vote of the visitors during the

MINERALS organizes every year - since 1987 - and is the sponsor of GeMin Expo , the unique exhibition in Hellas on
Minerals , Fossils and Gemstones in a way accessible even to non- specialists. It is not the first time that schools

In many cases during various discussions and/or publications in print and electronic media it is
reported that Greece has many minerals. Certainly all are judged by results . We - for many years -
dealing with the collection and study of minerals and fossils have evaluated several mineral stones and
cutting materials in an attempt to highlight gem rough material in Greece that might be the basis for
the development of local gemstone industry . There are many gemstones in the world , such as pink
quartz, aventurine and the others . Our wish was to identify a kind of gemstone not necessarily
monochromatic such as pink quartz or aventurine , but a gemstone presenting various designs during
cutting . Beside spending time , money and efforts we were also lucky (we think we deserve this) as we
could locate such a gemstone in Greece .We present the result : Gemstone "ATTIKH " . Why ATTIKH?
Simply because it is located in the prefecture of Attiki in Greece . And because a picture equals a
thousand words we let you enjoy a small selection of Gemstone ATTIKH that is tough , beautiful and has
earthy colors .

SUMMARY IN ENGLISH (Translation by ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS )

Samothrace is an island of the Thracian Sea. It is located in the northern part of the Aegean Sea between the islands
of Lemnos , Imbros and Thasos , and is located 24 nautical miles from Alexandroupolis . The island belongs from
Geology point of view in the Perirodopiki Zone which represents the continental slope of the Greek mainland
hinterland to the oceanic area of Axios zone that was formed during the Mesozoic Era ( 230-65 million years ago). It
consists of metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of low-grade metamorphism ( greenschist facies ) .
During the Tertiary ( before 65-2 million years ago ) , an elevation of alpine ridges occurred in Greece as a result of
continental collision. The tensile mode field in the North Aegean facilitated the rise of calcalkaline magmas . At the
same time during the Upper Oligocene (about 25 million years ago ) a volcanic arc was created which moved later
southwards to form the known South Aegean volcanic arc. The first structure gave genesis in volcanic rocks of
Samothrace and in general the volcanic rocks of North Aegean .
