Abi Bueltmann Professor Brandon EDUC-1070-2 5 December 2013 Personal Framework As a future educator, I will need to make sure

that my students are aware of the potential problems that could arise with the technology in use today and perhaps the future. These problems include social issues, educational issues, cultural or equity issues and also legal issues. Students need to be aware of these to remain safe and productive when on the web. Social issues includes quality of life concerns, fears about technology overuse/misuse, risks of online social networking, and problems due to malware, spam, or other malicious actions. Modern technology, notably the internet, has gained ridiculous amounts of popularity since its introduction, causing a concern that young people may become addicted to the internet. Fears about technology misuse, include sending messages/pictures, and making internet posts that one later feels the need to delete or worry about people seeing it. That type of behavior is dangerous to ones reputation and could lead to serious legal issues as well. Online social networking can be dangerous as well, considering you do not always know whom you are communicating with, and you cannot see their face. This includes risks such as internet pornography, predators and cyberbullying. Lastly are things such as spam, malware and other viruses of that sort. People with malicious intent often use these hazardous tools to get personal information, take over someones computer or even just for fun to destroy someones computer. All of these concerns are valid and should be of concern to any and every one who uses modern technology for any reason.

Lack of technology funding, teacher/student accountability for quality and progress, best practices with technologies, and reliance on distance education are all educational issues with technology. With the increase in the use of technology, schools are beginning to use advanced technology to meet with the demands of modern society. This is not easy, however, as the technology is often quite expensive. With some schools able to afford the technology, while others cant, creates inconsistencies in the way and pace at which students learn. People like to discuss what works best as far as incorporating technology in education. There are many instances, though, where solutions are never reached, so schools are using whatever methods they believe works best, also causing discrepancies in schools and how they teach. Another issue is the reliance on distance education. This may work fine for older students, who are also selfmotivated and disciplined, but younger students wont necessarily have access or the drive to use the resources needed for this type of education. Technology in education can be very beneficial but it has not yet worked out all of the kinks as it is in its trial run. Students and teachers alike need to be aware of this, and not expect everything involving technology to flow smoothly. Some cultural or equity problems arise with the usage of technology such as the digital divide, racial and gender equity, and students with special needs. The digital divide refers to how students with low-income have less access to technology than the more privileged students. On an individual basis, this is not as much a problem as in education. Students with low-income cannot usually afford to attend schools with the better technology tools. When comparing racial and ethnic groups some, specifically white males, use technology much more and enter careers in math, science and technology at much higher rates. Some believe there is a relation between the two, and believe that there should be equal access to technology for all. Many technological

devices are not created with special needs students in mind, so a disadvantage is provided to them in that way as well. Legal and ethical issues include hacking, safety issues, plagiarism/academic dishonesty, and illegal downloading/software piracy. Hacking goes along with the social issues in that it is used to gain personal information from others on the computer without the persons permission, obviously. Many schools install firewalls to avoid this problem, but even those are not completely secure. Safety issues include downloading viruses, or giving out personal information online, and even visiting an untrusted website. This is the cause for schools to create an Acceptable Use Policy that students are forced to sign, holding them responsible for anything that is mentioned in the policy. Cheating and plagiarism is much easier with people having access to so much information online. This makes it harder to catch too, as a student could use a site to get answers or write papers and not have to do any of the work themselves, but with so much to look through it would be difficult for a teacher to find a specific site without indication that the student may have cheated. Another common problem with newer technologies is illegal downloading and software piracy. This is a serious offense and is just like stealing, only it is harder to catch. Many people dont realize how their actions may affect people because it is anonymous, though. All of these issues should be brought to the attention of anyone using technology. I pledge, as a teacher to notify my students of the concerns listed in the framework. I promise to hold them accountable for how they use technology in school according to the AUP that they will have signed, whether it was given by the school or me. I will do this to be sure that they are being safe online, and responsible with their privileges, at least at school. http://bayerfactsofscience.online-pressroom.com
