AND....What Do You Feel are the "Good...Bad...and Ugly...about a College
Writing Class? (Please do NOT ask me how long this needs to be...just write until
you feel you have answered my questions...be specific ( I also LOVE
details)....write/print large enough to be read easily and be honest and sincere.

* Semester Course syllabus has not been returned from our printing dept...should have it
for you on Wednesday....here is Wednesday's assignment:

Wednesday's Assignment:

• WWF (Writing w/out Formulas text): Read thoughtfully and annotate Chapter 1,
pay special attention to areas that you agree/disagree with Thelin (the author).

• Also, make notes about Malcolm's thoughts about his value of education...Where
do you agree or disagree....bring these perceptions with you to class on
Wednesday.

Aug. 26
• Again, we will intro ourselves to each other...be ready to share something you
gained from Chapter 1 reading (remember TWO of the goals of SS :

Oral communication
Interpersonal Skills and Professionalism

• Small groups will share what they have understood about College Writing. Each
group will report out to large group.
• Mini lesson : Function and use of SF Writer

Week 2

Monday, Aug. 31 Assignment:

• Read, H/A WWF Chapter 2 - bottom of pg. 46 "Facts and Events as


Examples...to pg. 53 only ...again, be prepared to share your understanding.
• Read, H/A SF Writer..."Writers at Work" pg. 1 - 52...compare this with the
readings in WWF....what agrees? what disagrees? Be prepared to share.

* Hopefully, by this time, you will have the fully printed syllabus in hand...as always,
email me with your fears, questions, requests....jkrajeck@starkstate.edu....and ALWAYS
check your email in case I send you additional info.

Wednesday, Sept 2:

• Discussion of R. Meyer's article ...we will identify thesis, evidence for his views,
transitions that link his ideas, and creative sentences, word use, other devices
(bring 4 color highlighters to class for this assignment.)
• Mini review of APA format....bring SF Writer...we will review APA
citation/attribution pg. 351-356.

In class practice: Small group practice of APA attribution.

Week 3

Monday, Sept 7....Labor Day ..NO CLASS!

Assignment for Wednesday, Sept. 9... Read, H/A Chapter 3 pgs. 54 - 57...mark those
areas that you would recommend Anna should revise in her essay.

Wednesday, Sept. 9

• Discuss/suggest areas of interest for Research Project...topics must come from


current national or world events.
• Brief discussion of weak area's in Anna's essay and the importance of audience.
• Go over rubric and 1st essay topic: Looking back on your education and school
experiences, what do you value and what would you change? Be sure to suggest,
using some research, what you would add or change to your view of education
and school.
• We will review an essay rubric...2 -3 page rough draft of this 1st essay will be due
in class on Monday, Sept. 14.

Week 4

Monday, Sept. 14

• Small group share of your rough drafts...offer suggestions for revision based on
reason for writing (Chp. 1), critical analysis of suggestions/changes to education,
and appeal to a specific audience.
• Large group share of research topics.
• Review rubric for Reflective Letter (what you learned about revision).

Assignment for Wednesday, Sept. 16

• EMAIL Final Essay # 1 AND Reflective Letter due typed in class..highlighted


in 4 colors...
ALSO, EMAIL a copy to my address: jkrajeck@starkstate.edu by class time on the 16th.

Wednesday, Sept 16

• I will collect your highlighted essays/letters at beginning of class.


• In class discussion in SF Writer..."Writing Arguments" pg. 173 -179.
• We will review ideas for Essay # 2 in SF Writer pg. 187 - 190.
• Review rubric for Essay # 2.

Assignment for Monday, Sept. 21

Our next topic will be Honesty and Deception, Chapter 15 in WWF. Read, H/A the
Overview pg. 449-452. Browse the topics under Openings for Writers pg. 452-453...and
think how any of these suggestions relate to the current controversy of the health care
bills being discussed in both the Senate and House, as well as in town hall meetings.

Week 5

Monday, Sept. 21

• In class review of locating academic sources for online research. Then students
will explore sources while I conference.

• 1st essays returned with a one - on -one conference...for students 1 - 12...all others
may use this time to research online sources pertaining to the health care bills.

Wednesday, Sept 23

• 1st essays returned with a one - on -one conference...for students 13 - 24...all


others may use this time to research online sources pertaining to the health care
bills....continue researching...find/print/read/H/A THREE sources for your
research project...bring to class on Monday.

Assignment for Monday, Sept. 28

• You have ONE week to revise your 1st essay if you are not satisfied with the
assessment...include revisions (highlight additions/changes). I need the original
scored paper plus the revised one.
• Also Read, H/A THREE articles of your choice from WWF Chapter 15 that you
will reference in the health care essay.
• Remember to bring THREE H/A research sources to class on Monday.
Week 6

Monday, Sept. 28

• We will construct an outline for 2nd Essay in class, using computers and SF
Writer pg. 38....and you will EMAIL me the finished outline by Tuesday, Sept.
27.
• Overview of how to take/use notes for research either online or on notecards.

Assignment for Wednesday, Sept. 30

Read, H/A in SF Writer "Understanding Punctuation and Mechanics" pgs. 493 - 513...be
ready with anything that you need clarified...Remember, there are NO silly questions....I
am here to assist!

Wednesday, Sept. 30

• I will clarify any punctuation/mechanics questions you may have.


• Rough draft for Essay # 2 due in class on Monday, Oct. 5
• You may go to Writing Center to work on this OR finish on your own time.

Assignment for Monday, Oct. 5

Bring highlighted rough draft to class AND READ "Organizing and Structuring an
Argument"in SF Writer pg. 190 - to TOP of 204.

Week 7

Monday, Oct. 5

• Small group peer revision w/ rough draft of Essay #2...focus on word


choice/verbs...opening action...relate to any of the three essays from Chp. 15...be
prepared to share w/ large group.
• Discuss SF Writer pg. 190 - 204.

Assignment for Wednesday, Oct. 7

Either EMAIL final Essay # 2 or bring to class (4 color highlight).


Bring printed copy of your Reflective Letter to class...AND read Annotated Argument in
SF Writer pg 204 - 209...note the MLA format....we will compare it w/ APA on Monday.

Wednesday, Oct. 7

• Collect any final, highlighted Essay # 2's that were not emailed.
• Large group share from your Reflective Letter to class
• Discuss Annotated Argument in SF Writer pg 204 - 209, noting the MLA format
and suggesting changes for an APA format....* covering NEW changes in both
styles.

Assignment for Monday, Oct. 12...NO CLASS....Columbus Day! However, read at


least THREE essays from WWF Chapter 16 "Pets, Pests, & Beasts" as topic ideas for
Essay # 3...AND either online notes for research emailed by Oct. 14 OR bring
research notes to class for overview.

Week 8

Assignment for Wednesday, Oct. 14

During class conferences on Wednesday, work on Research Outline during this time,
either in class OR sign into Writing Center...Outline due emailed by Monday, Oct. 19.
