review of tenses
Fill in the sentences with the correct form of the verbs in brackets:
1. My parents (recently / buy) have recently bought some property in the south of France. They
(build) are building a summer cottage there at the moment.
2. Andy and sally (go) are going to a concert tomorrow night. They (look forward to) have
been looking forward to it all week.
3. When he (found) founded Microsoft, Bill Gates was only 20 years old. He (already / write)
had already written his first computer program seven years earlier.
4. Mrs Smith said that one day she (retire) would retire from teaching. She mentioned that she
(spend) would spend her time learning about computers.
5. They (stand) had been standing in the queue for an hour when the manager (inform)
informed them that no more tickets were available.
6. The men (sentence) were sentenced to eight years in prison. They (rob) had robbed many
banks.

incidents. Lets hope this situation will change soon.

night.

12. I saw a film a week ago, but I (not enjoy) didnt enjoy it very much. The problem was that I

(enjoy) would have enjoyed the film more.
13. Alan (be) was in a car accident yesterday. The other driver (lose) lost control of his car

wouldnt have occurred.

garage.
15. Last night my neighbour (knock) knocked on the door. She wanted my father to move his
car. She said she (can not) couldnt get out of her parking space.
16. Linda (phone) phoned me and (explain) explained that she (not come) wasnt coming to our
party the next day because she (be) was still sick.
17. Barry had an argument with Tom. Barry said that he (return) had returned Toms money the
week before. Tom insisted that he (not receive) hadnt received it
