Lesson Plan Date: 5/21/13

Motivational Device: Hold up the pentagon shape. Ask the students if the shape mirrors itself. Show the students that it does because when you fold it in half, the shape is the same on both sides. Lesson: 1. Teach reflectional symmetry and line of symmetry a. Definition of reflectional symmetry: One half is a mirror image of the other half b. Definition of line of symmetry: the line where the mirror images itself c. Show the pentagon shape again and draw the line of symmetry d. Show the non-example 2. Activity a. Put students in partners b. Pass out work sheet. Go over the directions c. Pass out the shapes that the students will be using as models for the worksheet d. Explain that there will be a small competition of who could find the most amount of lines of symmetry e. Go over the work sheet with the right answers f. CFU Draw a rhombus on the bored and have the students hold up the number of fingers of lines of symmetry (2) 3. Teach reflection a. Definition: a transformation that flips a figure over a line of reflection *Explain that it is just like a mirror b. Have students be mirrors to each other across the desk c. Explain that the desk is the line of reflection 4. Using the graph and triangle shape over the x-axis a. Put a triangle on the graph on the chalk board b. Show that you can count the spaces to the line of reflection c. Put the triangle over the reflection side d. CFU Have students do the next problem on the work sheet e. Let a student solve it on the board and let others check their work 5. Using the graph and triangle shape over the y-axis a. Explain that it is the same as before but over the y-axis b. CFU Have students do the next problem on the work sheet c. Let a student solve it on the board and let others check their work Closer: Ticket out the door: Draw a simple shape on the graph paper provided, give it to your partner and have them find the reflection of the shape. This will be turned in as you leave. Homework: There will be extra problems on the work sheet. Students can do these problems if there is extra time or complete this portion for homework.
