Fisher-Titus Autism Spectrum Kids Sensory-Friendly Santa Event Rings in the Holidays
Taking that classic photo with Santa at the mall can be scary for any child, but it can be even scarier and overwhelming for a child on the autism spectrum. Loud holiday music, endless lines, ashing twinkle lights, the ambient noise of the passersby, followed by a booming HO HO HO! from Santa might just send the children with autism spectrum disorders, sensory integration disorders, or other developmental delays over the edge. The end result is a miserable experience for both the family and the child. Fisher-Titus Medical Centers Autism Spectrum Kids program (ASK) has teamed up with Premiere Theater 8 in Norwalk to bring families and children with autism and other disabilities a special event this holiday season. The event will include a sensory friendly Santa, crafts, and a sensory friendly showing of the holiday favorite,The Polar Express. The Sensory Friendly Movie and Santa event is scheduled for Saturday, Dec.7. It will begin at 10 a.m. with Santa and holiday crafts with the movie beginning promptly at 10:45 a.m. At our sensory friendly Santa and holiday event, the environment will be modied to decrease the likelihood that the child will become overstimulated and overwhelmed, said Lindsey Esker, Pediatric Programming Coordinator at Fisher-Titus Medical Center. These modications will include no loud holiday music, sensory break areas set up for children who need a break or who are scared, sensory friendly crafts for those who have difculty waiting in line, and a Santa who is patient and experienced with children with special needs. Parents are encouraged to bring their cameras so that they can snap a photo of their child with Santa. If needed, parents can take several photos to get that perfect holiday picture. Following the Santa and craft activities, Premiere Theater 8 is featuring a sensory friendly showing of The Polar Express. Admission to the movie will be free for each person who brings in a non-perishable good to be donated to the local Salvation Army. Otherwise, tickets are $5.50 each. Children on the autism spectrum often have difculty transitioning to new activities. To help prepare the children for the holiday event, a Seeing Santa social story has been created. This social story will be mailed out to the ASK mailing list, will be at the theater, and is available upon request to anyone who will be attending the event. For more information on the sensory friendly Santa and movie showing of The Polar Express, or any of Fisher-Titus Medical Centers pediatric programs, please contact Lindsey Esker at 419-660-2117, Ext. 3040. Fisher-Titus Medical Center's Autism Spectrum Kids (ASK) Program provides special programming and support for children, families, and the community who are touched by Autism, Asperger's syndrome and PDD-NOS. The ASK Program is centered around Fisher-Titus Medical Centers pediatric therapy department.

Santa schedules Huron visit for December 14th

Huron Parks & Recreation is pleased to announce that Santa and Mrs. Claus are taking a break from their busy schedule to visit Huron on Saturday, December 14th. The famous couple plans to arrive at the Huron Boat Basin at 330 N. Main Street at 4:00 pm. One of their sled reindeers will also be making the trip with them. Santa could not disclose the reindeers identity yet, since the trip to Huron is the grand prize for the reindeer games. The winning reindeer will be announced at a North Pole news conference the evening before the trip. The Christmas with Santa event begins at 3:30 pm and will continue until 8:00

pm. Santa said that he and Mrs. Claus look forward to hearing about special gift requests so they can update their list. When asked about his reason for visiting the Boat Basin each year, Santa replied well, the best part is talking with the children. But Mrs. Claus smiled and said that he also likes the cookies and hot chocolate. There is no charge for admission. Donations (gloves, mittens, scarves) to our "Warm Hands from Young Hearts" tree are always appreciated. Be sure to allow time for the children to create memories and fun crafts with the Just Like Home Childcare staff and for the entire family to enjoy carriage rides.

Two New Physicians Join Fisher Titus
Dr. Michael Davis, a board certied interventional cardiologist, and Dr. John Abboud, board-certied cardiologist, have recently joined Cleveland Clinics Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute and the medical staffs at Fisher-Titus Medical Center and The Bellevue Hospital. They have begun practicing in the Snyder/White Heart & Vascular Center at Fisher-Titus and in the Specialty Clinic at The Bellevue Hospital. Fisher-Titus and The Bellevue Hospital announced in June an afliation with Cleveland Clinics Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute. As part of the afliation, Cleveland Clinic is hiring and employing a permanent physician team of two cardiologists, a vascular surgeon and a thoracic surgeon to work in the hospitals and live in the communities in which they serve. Dr. Davis and Dr. Abboud are the two cardiologists permanently assigned to the Snyder/White Heart & Vascular Team as part of the physician team. The heart and vascular program at Fisher-Titus is being fully staffed by Cleveland Clinic physicians while the rest of the team is being recruited. Those team members are here 24/7 during their rotations. Dr. Davis is the medical director of the heart program at Fisher-Titus. His clinical interests include acute coronary syndrome, pulmonary hypertension, cardiac echocardiography and vascular disease (arterial and venous). Most recently, Dr. Davis served as the medical director, heart partnership for both the Ohio State University and Memorial Hospital of Union County. In addition, he was the medical director of the vascular laboratory at Memorial Hospital of Union County and medical director of the heart recovery program at Heartland Rehabilitation Center in Marysville. He and his wife have three children. Dr. Abboud is providing care along with other Cleveland Clinic heart, vascular and thoracic specialists at the Fisher-Titus Snyder/White Heart & Vascular Center. His clinical interests include cardiovascular disease, nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, and cardiovascular computed tomography. He most recently served as a cardiologist at Cardiology One Inc. in Canton. He and his wife, who is an internist, have two young daughters and will be relocating to our area. Recruitment efforts led by Dr. Daniel Clair, chair of vascular surgery at Cleveland Clinic, continue in order to bring a vascular specialist and a thoracic surgeon to the team, said Suzanne Inglis, assistant vice president of nursing. In the meantime, we are fortunate to have world-class Cleveland Clinic physicians providing care for our vascular and thoracic patients in our local hospitals 24/7.Fisher-Titus and The Bellevue Hospital serve a combined six-county region which includes Erie, Huron, Lorain, Richland, Sandusky and Seneca counties. This afliation brings these communities four new physicians and Cleveland Clinics best practices and reputation in heart and vascular care.

Zink Brassiere to Re Locate

With Sandusky in the midst of a restaurant renaissance, its no surprise that the catalysts of this culinary movement are back at it once again. Chef Cesare and Andrea Avallone, owners of various local dining establishments including Zinc Brasserie, Crush Winebar, Crush Kitchenbar and Dockside Cafe have a new project simmering. Zincs new location on 215 East Water Street is signicantly larger than the original restaurant, affording the Avallones a chance to fulll their new vision, but also the opportunity to enhance the experience through patrons feedback. As a restaurant owner and chef, youre always listening and learning, states Chef Cesare. This unique space nally gives us the chance to use some of those suggestions that we have heard the past several years. A larger capacity with more seating being at the forefront. While adding to the formal dining experience was very important to the new establishment, so was preserving the past. From exposing brick and repurposing building elements to transporting Zincs existing bar and classic

menu items, the historical signicance of the building stays intact as does the recognizable feel of the original Zinc. We felt it was all about balance, says Andrea Avallone. Everyone enjoys something new but still likes a grasp on the familiar. Weve accomplished that in the new space. With this appropriately sized location, the Avallones will introduce Hearth Tavern. Diners craving hand-crafted wood red pizzas and an extensive craft beer list can rejoice. Hearth Tavern, the latest creation from this dynamic duo, features a state-of-the-art wood red oven, multiple beer taps and even wine taps that give diners a causal option in the same building. The new establishment is slated to open early 2014 while the annual New Years Party will still be taking place at the existing Zinc location. Board Certication is voluntary and includes an exam that tests a physicians ability to diagnose and treat patients with a broad range of conditions. Dr. Jha completed his medical education at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College in Nagpur, India and his residency at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington D.C. He is on the medical staff at Firelands Regional Medical Center and provides patients with a full range of mental health services with a special interest in depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and substance-related disorders.Dr. Jha sees patients at 143 East Water Street, Sandusky, along with Gregory Bishop, MD and Carlos Lowell, III, DO. to select their favorite poem to submit to Creative Kids magazine. Over the years Mr. Casper has had several students published in this magazine. Competition is rather tough as students are competing on a national level. Creative Kids is a national magazine geared toward gifted students between the ages of 8 and 16.

uron H arket M
(LEFT) Rece Gimperling (RIGHT) Luke Hanley The sixth grade Gifted Language Arts class at Woodlands Intermediate School has been studying the different types of poetry and creating poetry books. This years class of 14 students has done an exceptional job and they have generated some high quality work in their writing and illustrating of their poetry books, explained Mr. Dale Casper, Gifted Intervention Specialist for Woodlands. The students have written upwards of 50 poems and have selected their best works for their books. Each poem was to fall within a certain category. The categories were voted on by the class. Nature, Sports, Super Powers and Potpourri were the selected categories for this years poetry book. The World of Poems written and illustrated by Rece Gimperling is a nely crafted piece lled with 24 of the young authors favorite works. For Rece writing poetry comes to her naturally. Often times an idea will come to her and she will tuck it away to write about it later, she explained. For example, she was inspired to write Falling Leaves after raking leaves in her front yard. Rece has found her greatest challenge to be continuing to come up with ideas to write about. Having completed over 50 poems she has selected what she feels are the best 24 for her poetry book. One of the most important lessons Rece has learned from this assignment is to take her time and not to rush through writing or illustrating her book. In addition to writing poetry, Rece likes to write short stories. Luke Hanley, author and illustrator of Night of the Living Poem, had been working on his book for over two weeks. Complete with 21 of his favorite poems, Luke preferred the rhyming couplet style of poetry the best. As he explained the rhyming pattern to be: aa, bb, cc. etc. He liked the challenge this particular style offered and shared the secret to his writing success. When you cant think of something to rhyme, go through the alphabet and try to nd a rhyming word with each letter. Rhyming couplets are frequently off topic so it is ok that they are fun, explained Luke. One of Lukes favorite poems in his book was about baseball and titled Grand Slam . He chose this as a favorite because he felt it was well written and contained a metaphor. In addition to poetry, Luke likes to write reports about people. As the poetry books are nearing completion, Mr. Caspers sixth grade Language Arts class will be holding a poetry reading for Ms. Galloways third grade class. Mr. Caspers students will also have the opportunity

A Program For Change

Searching for a job, having your resume just right and being prepared with top notch employability skills can be tough for some. Especially for those who have been out of the workforce for a time and on public assistance. EHOVE Adult Career Center started managing a program in October that will help people in this situation transition successfully into a career. Considered to be a welfare to work program, EHOVEs PEAK program will put people to work through jobs at its facility in Fremont, while also teaching them vital employability skills to help them search for jobs, create a strong resume, communicate well and have a strong work ethic. This effort is funded through a contract with Sandusky County Job & Family Services. Our goal is to prepare them for jobs, help businesses, prepare our local workforce and help move them off public assistance, said EHOVE Adult Career Centers Phil Johnson who is administering the grant and managing

the facility. He works on site with a team of EHOVE staff members to train the workers and manage the projects. Participants spend part of their day in training but another part of their day working on projects. Income generated from these projects helps to offset public assistance funds while also preparing participants to earn certications like OSHA, IC3 and forklift operator. Johnson says PEAK is now offering online GED opportunities and will soon offer ofce training. The program also allots a set number of hours for participants to search for a job. The number of hours for each varies and is determined after a review of their situation by Sandusky County Job & Family Services. To enable them to consistently report to the facility and search for jobs, the participants also have access to transportation vouchers. Local businesses who have work that can be outsourced can arrange for it to be completed through this program. The facility has plenty of space, a loading dock and equipment necessary to perform many different types of projects for private businesses and industries as well as local government entities. Examples of past projects include cutting and rolling tool box liners, wiring assembly, shredding documents and assembling components. Adam Schaloff of Bellevue participated in the program and found a job just three weeks after starting the program. I think its pretty good, said Schaloff. It helps push people along to learn skills for the real world. Businesses who are interested in touring the facility or nding out if PEAK services are right for them are encouraged to contact Business Liaison Tina Schank at 419-355-1750. More information will be available at www.EHOVE. net in the coming weeks.
