In earlier days, this area was ruled by a king called Betha Raaju. He built temples in BethamCherla village for Shri Anjaneya Swamy, Shri Maadhava Swamy and Shri ChennaKeshava Swamy. One day, the king went for hunting and found no animal on that day. On return, he took rest near a big stone on the BethamCherla hillock.

So sitting he went into deep sleep. In the sleep, he had a dream and saw Lord Shri NaraSimha Swamy. The God said to him that you are not supposed to go for hunting here. This area is under my rule and no animal is supposed to be hurt and thats why you could not find any animal to hunt here. Awake and find my Swayambhu Moorthy just opposite to you on a stone. Worship me and then you and your kingdom will be peaceful and prosperous. The king woke up and found the Swayambhu Moorthy in front of him on the rock as Lord Shri NaraSimha Swamy told him in the dream. The king was overjoyed. He worshipped Lord NaraSimha Swamy made arrangements for worship. He then used to visit this place and used to offer Paayasam twice every year.

We have no evidence that Betham Raju had constructed a temple for Swamy here. But, recently a temple was built for Lord Shri Lakshmi NaraSimha Swamy here. As Swamy is located on a Gutta (Hillock), he is called as Gutta NaraSimha Swamy and later it is popularly known and called as Gattu NaraSimha Swamy.

This Gattu NaraSimha Swamy of BethamCherla is very famous in and around this are for his Mahimas and lot of people from nearby villages visit Him to worship. Bethamcherla is very famous for the mines of minerals used in the manufacturing of the flooring tiles. These mines are widely spread and very big too. They export

these tiles to various places of the country and abroad too. Because of these mines, this area is very rich and the local people attribute the richness and fame to this village only to the kindness of Gattu NaraSimha Swamy. For the welfare of the people here, the custom started by Betha Raju offering Payasam to Gattu NaraSimha Swamy is continued till today. In hardships and natural calamities, Ambali Jaatara (offering Paayasam as fair) is celebrated to get relief those difficult situations. The Archakas live in Bethamcherla. Every morning and evening prayers are offered timely to Shri Gattu NaraSimha Swamy Swayambhu Murthy. Even in odd times, the devotees can fetch the Archakas from the village to have Darshan and can offer prayers too. The devotees who visit Ahobilam can reach this BethamCherla Gattu NaraSimha Swamy temple via AallaGadda, BanaGaaniPalli villages.
