ANC 6D Resolution in Support of Improving North-South Pedestrian Crossings Across M Street SE Presented on: December 9, 2013 Presented by:

David Garber, ANC 6D07 Vote Co nt: !nanimo s " 6#0#0 !EREAS" the Navy Yard / Ballpark neighborhood is developing quickly with new restaurant and retail amenities, public spaces, and new residential and commercial buildings; !EREAS" these amenities and attractions are on both sides of M treet !, an automobile"centric arterial designed before pedestrian circulation was given much of any consideration in this neighborhood; !EREAS" some of the most heavily"visited places in the neighborhood are south of M treet ! and most of the residential population is north of M treet !, so crossing M treet ! is often a daily or multiple times daily activity for many living, working, or visiting the neighborhood; !EREAS" intersections with M treet ! are programmed and timed to give preference to automobile drivers driving east"west along M treet !, rather than to pedestrians trying to cross M treet ! north"south safely and within a reasonable amount of time; #!ERE$%RE& 'E I# RES%()ED" that #N$ %& send a letter to the &istrict &epartment of 'ransportation requesting that they present #N$ %& with improvement plans to current M treet ! intersections between and including (alf treet ! and )th treet ! for *+ increasing signal regularity north"south / decreasing intersection cycle lengths to reduce north"south pedestrian delay, ,+ increasing length of signal timing north"south, and -+ making pedestrian walk signals automatic / making full pedestrian crossing phase a part of a fi*ed signal cycle at all intersection signal changes, without the need to press a walk button to call for the walk signal+
