George R. Reese (1943 - 2013)
George R. Reese, beloved father, husband, grandfather, brother, son, pastor, and friend died on December 5, 2013. He was at home, surrounded by his family as well their prayers, thanks, love, and song. George was born September 6, 1943, the son of James O. and Elizabeth H. Reese, in Melrose Park, Illinois. Music, family, and ministry were his passions in life. He started playing guitar at 8 years old and became an accomplished musician, playing in combos and events all over the Chicago area. He received a double degree in Psychology and Religion from Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. He went on to receive his Master of Divinity from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. George then served 39 joyful years in ministry with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at three different congregations; as Associate Pastor at Central Christian Church in Kettering, Ohio, then as Senior Pastor at First Christian Church in Wauseon, Ohio, and finally as the founding Pastor of Tylersville Road Christian Church in Mason, Ohio where upon his retirement he was named Pastor Emeritus. His unyielding faith and love in God allowed him to reach beyond those church building walls to affect the lives of countless others through his message of hope, faith, and love for all. His ministry took him to new church starts, church youth camp, Russia, The Holy Land, England, Hawaii and more. George and Cory celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary July 1, 2013. They have three loving children and four grandchildren: Kirsten (Reese) and Gerry Knapp and son Connor, Chris and Stacey Reese and Chris daughter Adelaide (Addie) Reese and Staceys son Tomas Hernandez, Katrina Reese and daughter Corynn Bass. His children and their spouses all carry on their fathers legacy of caring, working in the field of social work. His grandchildren all carry on his love for music. Since retiring in 2007, George spent time golfing, filling in for vacationing pastors, serving as a docent at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, being in the sunshine as much as possible, travelling with Cory, and spending time with his children and beautiful grandchildren. We will miss his warmth, his caring, his loving touch, his contagious smile, his wealth of wisdom, his gift of song, and his ever-present joy for life. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our hero. But we rejoice, knowing that God used this vessel made of clay to bring countless lives into relationship with Jesus Christ, and this same God was waiting for him with arms open wide. Rest easy in the arms of the Lord, faithful servant. Well done.

Little Lights Daycare and Preschool is a ministry of the River of Life Worship Center. Located at 14226 US Hwy 20-A in Montpelier, Ohio, they can be reached at 419-485-5029 or riveroflife@ williams-net.com. The center is open from 6 am 6 pm Monday through Friday and has 9 caregivers. Due to their unique location, they currently have North Central, Mill-Creek and Montpelier schools that pick up and drop off at the center. They are also set up for children enrolled in Head Start as well. They take pride in what they do and are very honored that parents would choose to bring their children to our center and care for them. They work very hard to get the children ready for kindergarten while also addressing the ODE Standards. They have many outings for the children who come to the center, including our summer school-age program. In the summer, they take the school-agers to the pool, parks & recreation program in town, local nursing homes, tour a local farm, supermarket, pizza shop, and also plan an all day outing to Sauders Village. We would encourage those who would be thinking about needing care, to give us a call so we can show you around and what we have to offer.

Jamming In Nettle Lake

By: Jennifer Manlove THE VILLAGE REPORTER
Do you ever wonder where the good clean fun and fellowship is? Well, Nettle Lake has a lot to offer. If you play or enjoy listening to acoustic instruments like harmonicas, guitars, dulcimers, bass, mandolins, fiddles, and banjos then Nettle Lake is the place to be. The first Saturday of each month beginning at 6pm, both new and old players gather for an evening of music. This past Saturday the Nettle Lake United Brethren in Christ Church had a nice crowd. Lots of Christmas songs were played as well as gospel songs and some Merl e Haggard and Johnny Cash. The musicians present were from near and far, and varied from the young to the young at heart. Needless to say, there was a lot of talent. You can join the fun next month on January 4th at 6pm at the Nettle Lake United Brethren in Christ Church, located at 18560 County Road 5-75 Montpelier, OH. Snacks and drinks are provided, and a great night is sure to be had by anyone attending. You can find them on Facebook at Nettle Lake Music Jam. For more information you can contact the Pastor, Mike Wilder at 419-485-4112 or email him at dwilder@metalink.net. You can also sign up to get reminders from Marilyn Mullins by emailing her at marilynmullins@hotmail.com.

Santa Makes His Annual Arrival In Edons Walz Park

By: Angi Walkup THE VILLAGE REPORTER Even with the frigid, icy temperatures, there were still plenty of area residents that came out to see Santa in the Park. Santa arrived in style ... not with his sleigh or reindeer, but with the assistance of the Edon Fire Department on a fire truck. The lights in the park were glowing even though it wasnt quite dark enough yet to see their beauty. Santa sat cozy by the fireplace inside the Depot with a decorated Christmas tree and ambience by his side. The Edon queens were his elves for the evening as they handed out candy canes to the children after passing their wishes to Santa. Cookies and hot chocolate were provided by St. Peters Lutheran Church by free will donation. And outside were the sounds of carolers, young and wise, singing Christmas songs to our hearts. Angi Walkup may be reached at publisher@thevillagereporter.com

CONTINUATION OF GENERAL NEWS / CONTINUED FROM THE FRONT PAGE

November 2013 Will Be Remembered

on the 11th through 13th, temperatures warmed quickly with highs back into the 60s by the 17th. This was the warmest day of the month, with the high reaching 65 at Fort Wayne ahead of the arrival of the second arctic cold front. It was this front was associated with a preliminary count of 28 tornadoes across Indiana... breaking the record for most tornadoes in a single day in November and being the third most tornadoes for any day of the year in Indiana." Although our immediate area did not see widespread tornadic activity on November 17, the outflow from the frontal boundary was still fierce with winds in excess of 60 miles per hour. A rapidly regenerating severe thunderstorm along the front blew up in northern Defiance County, prompting warnings for Defiance, Williams and Fulton Counties. The only confirmed tornado activity in our area on the day came from the same severe thunderstorm which entered Ohio in Van Wert County. At 4:47 pm, an EF-1 tornado packing 100 mph winds touched down briefly about 0.3 miles south of the intersection of Elm Sugar and Doner Roads. It only spent two minutes on the ground before lifting just south of the Paulding County line. Seconds later though, the storm regenerated and dropped a second, more powerful EF-2 funnel just inside the Paulding County line. Eventually crossing into Putnam County, packing winds of 130 mph and moving northeast at 65 mph, this tornado remained on the ground for 11.1 miles, plowing through Cloverdale before finally lifting five miles northeast of the heavily damaged village. All things considered and with due respect to the fair folks of Cloverdale, this was a tolerable outcome to the passage of the front. Bear in mind that just a few hours earlier, this same line of storms dropped a half-mile wide EF-4 funnel on East Peoria, Illinois that would go on to shred Washington, Illinois to pieces, kill one and injure 125. Factoring that into the picture, you can say with some justification that we got off easy. It is often easy to forget about people that are not in your corner of the world. That being said, how many memories of the November 10, 2002 EF-4 wedge were being revisited by the people of Van Wert, Paulding and Putnam Counties as the sirens began to wail nearing the 5 o'clock hour. Once again, this round proved to have an unfortunate, but much more tolerable outcome than the beast of nine years past that extinguished the lives of four and left a path of destruction almost 53 miles long. The average monthly temperature was 38.1 degrees, which was 3.3 degrees below normal. This ranked as the 21st coolest November on record dating back to 1912. The highest temperature was 65 on the 17th and the coldest was 14 on the 24th. There were 3 days with temperatures remaining at or below 32 degrees. This tied for 26th place for number of November days with high temperatures below freezing. Yes, it was indeed a frigid ending to the month, but we were not alone in the experience. Over the course of the last seven days of the month of November, weather stations across the continental 48 states recorded a total of 1,455 broken weather records. Of those records, 1,250 dealt specifically with temperature readings. From those 1,250 records, the amount that dealt with record warm temperatures was (drum roll, please) 78. The remaining amount of broken records, 1,172 of them, all pertained to record COLD temperatures, several of which were set in our region. What were the remaining 205 records that were set during the final week of the month that were not temperature related? Those were record setting snowfall amounts. The biggest cluster of record cold and record snowfall readings was not found in Wisconsin, Minnesota or the Dakotas. Rather than the Great White North, the commune of cold was found in...Texas, specifically in an area from Amarillo, down to Midland and Odessa, and into the Abilene area. Even Yuma, Arizona on the Mexican border got into the record cold act. Impressive...especially considering that we are just past the mid-fall season line and that winter is still weeks in the offing. Precipitation for November was 1.46 inches, which was 1.63 inches below normal. This ranked as the 20th driest November on record. The official snowfall was only an inch, 0.8 inches below normal. This ranked as the 44th least snowy November. Overall, the fall season of 2013 had slightly below normal temperatures, precipitation and snowfall at Fort Wayne. The average monthly temperature was 52.0, just 0.8 degrees below normal. This ranked as the 34th coolest fall season on record. Fall 2013 total precipitation was 7.01 inches, 1.72 inches below normal, ranking the autumn of 2013 as the 37th driest fall season. There was 1.0 inches of snow recorded for the season, 1.1 inches below normal. All of this snow fell in November. This ranked as the 39th least snowy fall season. That was then...what about the now, and specifically what about Christmas. A wave of the hands above the CPC crystal ball says that winter precipitation should be (cue the drum roll again), below average in the Southwest, Southeast and the Alaskan panhandle. Above average precipitation is expected in the Northern Rockies, particularly over Montana and northern Wyoming and in Hawaii. The temperature outlook for the 201314 winter should feature below average temperatures in the Northern Plains and the Alaskan Panhandle, and above average temperatures in the Southwest, the South-Central U.S., parts of the Southeast, New England and western Alaska. The astute reader will note that something is missing from the aforementioned prognostication...specifically the area between Lakes Michigan and Erie. There's a good reason for that; the CPC says that our area, temperature and precipitationwise, is predicted to remain normal. You know, like it was last month... Like it was when 1,172 record cold readings were set in a single week... Like it was when 205 snowfall records were smashed in the same week... Did someone change the meaning of the word, 'normal', or does that CPC crystal ball need a healthy blast of Windex? Stay tuned, brothers and sisters. I've got this funky feeling that 'normal' is going to be tempered with a healthy dose of 'anything-but normal' before the arrival of 2014. Timothy Kays can be reached at tim@thevillagereporter.com

A tough battle was made a little bit easier, as the friends and family of Fonda Griser gathered together to hold a benefit in her honor. Fonda is currently facing her second battle with throat cancer. She beat the disease the first time around, but it has sadly come back, and has started to spread to other areas. Benefit director Richard Cuffle was very happy to see the amount of support that was given to Fonda. The benefit for Fonda was a huge success, I was completely blown away by how well the community came out and supported a local resident, some new her and some did not, but it was a fact that she was a resident of our area and people cared. Cuffle said I am happy to say I was able to help make this possible, but it really is the donors and the community who made it happen I was just there to see it come alive. A total of $6,240 was raised at the benefit, and was presented to Fonda on Friday December 6th. That is well over what we thought we could raise Cuffle said we served over 200 people, greatly exceeding out goal. Cuffle also said that Fonda is very grateful for the outpouring of support that was shown to her. Four Local Red Cross Blood Drives Scheduled

In a season filled with giving, theres a multitude of ways you can give back to your community through your American Red Cross. The gift you give today will be there for the patient needing blood, the family needing shelter, or the child who needs a hug and a blanket, said Sharyn Whitman, CEO for the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. Your gifts of time, blood or money can help save the day down the street, across the country and around the world. As a humanitarian organization led by volunteers, the Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster and to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. As part of that mission, the Red Cross also provides about half of the nations blood supply through voluntary blood donations. Volunteers are always needed, Red Cross officials say, to work in areas related to disaster relief, health and safety, and providing emergency communications to military members and their families. Volunteers are also needed to coordinate and sponsor blood drives or simply roll up their sleeves and give blood or platelets. People can help, too, by sharing motivational stories about their experiences with the Red Crosseither through the organizations web site, or by joining the conversation on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Youre needed in whatever ways you chose to give, said Whitman. Not a day goes by that we dont hear from the people, families, and communities who benefit from your kindness. UPCOMING AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVES: * Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Ck Tech, located at 1701 Magda Drive in Montpelier. * Friday, Dec. 20, from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, located at 114 W. Fayette Students Participates In National FFA Convention

The National FFA Convention was held in Louisville, KY. Chapters from all 50 states including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands attend convention in Louisville. The Fayette FFA Chapter officers traveled there this year and experienced speakers, tours, and various college opportunities at the trade fair. This year the speaker at the 86th National FFA Convention and Expo was Rick Pintino. Mr. Pintino is a re-nouned basketball coach. He has coached many teams and delivered a great message to the members about never giving up and not always taking the easy road. Louisville holds a career show during the course of the convention. Students had the opportunity to play games and win free things. Many colleges were there to offer help to those looking for a future in agriculture. With down time during National Convention the officer team was able to attend the Hypnotist Al Snyder, as well as Buckeye Bash. Not only did they have a blast, but it was good being able to mingle with others from other parts of the United States and in our own state of Ohio. Every year at National Convention the officer team takes tours. This years picks was 240 Sweet, The Kentucky Derby and a Trail of Lights. 240 sweet is a company that prides themselves on fined crafted marshmallows. These marshmallows range in flavors from dill pickle to caramel corn. It was a great way for the officers to cure their sweet tooth. The Kentucky Derby was fascinating for all of us. We were able to explore the rich history of the derby, see a few horses and even watch a stakes race. Finally we toured a trail of lights, which consisted of over 10,000 carved Jack-O-Lanterns. There were carvings big and small and it was amazing to see what the artist could do with a pumpkin. This year the Fayette FFA also had four American FFA Degree Recipients. These members were: Darrell Randall, Sarah Kovar, Clay Burkholder and Rebecca Rash. These members were part of the only one percent of FFA members that received the degree this year. These members have worked hard not only in high school but out of high school to reach this amazing plateau of achieving the highest degree and honor possible in the National FFA Organization. National Convention is a great learning experience and a good time for those FFA members who attend. It has so much to offer and a good experience to get out and see what other FFA chapters are doing. The officer team had a good time and got to experience things together at the 86th FFA National Convention and Expo.

We appreciate all the Boosters do on behalf of music in Wauseon!! To my knowledge, Wauseon has never received this award before. As a music staff, we are fortunate to work in a school district with supportive administrators and teachers who support music as much as they possibly can from both a scheduling and financial perspective. Staying ahead of the cost of great music programs can be very expensive and we are lucky to have an outstanding group of parents who work to fund raise to make up this difference. The time spent and the amount of funds raised by the Wauseon Music Boosters has set them apart as being an outstanding music support group in Ohio. A brief recognition at the OMEA State Conference in Columbus on Friday, February 7th will be held prior to the All State Band Performance. Booster officers and chairs will attend and come on stage to accept the award. Wauseon music teachers and officers will be invited to a reception the next morning. More formal details from the state OMEA board will be provided to the Music Boosters in the coming weeks. The current Music Boosters Officers include Laura Kamp, President, Doug Stiriz, VP, Wendy Hardy, Co-Treasurer, Lynne Boyers, Co-Treasurer, and Robin Yackee, Secretary. The Wauseon Schools Music Staff is comprised of Jessica Aeschliman, Choir Director, Eric Boswell, Band Director, Caitlyn Lay, Elementary Music Teacher, Jason Lozer, Assistant Band Director, and Betsy Wenger, Primary Music Teacher. Wauseon Music Boosters Receive State Honor Wauseon City Council Approves Annual Budget & Employee Insurance
By: Tammy Allison THE VILLAGE REPORTER One of the most familiar smells of the Fulton County Fair is that of the sweet Wauseon Music Boosters donuts wafting through the air from the under the Grandstand. The annual doughnut frenzy, the major fundraiser of the Music Boosters, involves hard work and a labor of love and is probably what the Boosters are most known for. Although the sweet treats are delicious, the Wauseon Music Boosters are busy year round supporting and building the musical talent of our local youth, and they recently have received a statewide award for their efforts and hard work. The Wauseon Music Boosters exists to support and supplement the musical programs of the Wauseon schools. This past fall, the music staff at Wauseon collaborated to complete a nomination for the Wauseon Music Boosters as an Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Outstanding Music Support Group. The OMEA State Board voted and have chosen the Wauseon Music Boosters as the 2014 OMEA Outstanding Music Support Group. Robin Yackee, Music Boosters Secretary shares that the Music Boosters support every aspect of anything to do with music in the schools. The Boosters provide support to the bands, choirs, and educational musical classes. They support band camp, musical trips, buy instruments, music, and band uniforms. Upon learning of the award, Wauseon Band Director Eric Boswell expressed, This is outstanding news for Wauseon!

REFLECTIONS OF THE PAST

1975 Cheries Treasure Chest

NOSTALGIC STOREFRONT ... Cheries Treasure Chest as it appeared back in 1975. The storefront was situated at 142 N. Fulton St. The building is presently home to the Mark L. Powers Attorneys At Law offices.

During their regularly scheduled December 2 meeting, members of the Wauseon City Council heard reports and dealt with a variety of legislative matters, mostly pertaining to the annual budget and the insurance plan for employees of the city. Councilor Shane Chamberlin reported to council on behalf of the Safety and Code Committee that the committee had met and discussed the Lexipol Policy and Procedures Manual that had been being worked on by Police Chief Keith Torbet and Director of Law Thomas McWatters III. As Chief Torbet had spoken to the committee, asking them to adopt the manual for use by the Police Department, the committee made a recommendation to council to do so. The recommendation was passed unanimously. Councilor Heather Kost reported to council on behalf of the Personnel Committee on three different meetings that the committee had recently held. The first of these meetings was to outline to the committee the results of the negotiations with police unions along with any changes that had been made. Changes that have been approved by the union include an increase in the deductible for traditional plans from $500 to $1000 for a single plan and from $1000 to $2000 for a family plan. The city will reimburse employees $250 for employees whose $2000 deductible is met and $125 for employees on the single plan whose deductible is met. The employee premiums for the traditional plan increased slightly. Copays will count toward the deductible in 2014 while drug costs will be applied in 2015. In HSA plans, a change from aggregate to embedded plans will affect how much total out of pocket expense a family may pay in a year. The former plans, which were aggregate plans, had families paying a maximum of $12,000 in out of pocket health care expenses. The new plan, which is an embedded plan, will lower the total of this maximum to $10,000. Also discussed was that the percentage wage increase offered to union members of the department is 2% in 2014 and 1.5% in 2015. Council approved the committees recommendation to approve the Memorandum of Understanding with the police unions, which includes Command Officers, Patrol Officers and Records Technicians, as well as full time Dispatchers. Councilor Kost continued to explain that the second personnel meetings was held with employee representatives for the non-union employees, who were given an opportunity to ask questions. One of the issues of the non-union employees raised was that they would like to see an increase in their work uniform allowance. The committee recommended to council an increase from $350 to $400 per year and this regard and council approved the recommendation. The third meeting Councilor Kost discussed was the meeting to approve to recommendation for the changes in the PPO and HDHP medical insurance plans and the wage and compensation plan along with giving dental reimbursement for employees who have an HSA high deductible plan. The reimbursement would be removed in 2015. Council also approved this recommendation.

Moving on to department head reports, Regional Planning Director David Wright reported to council that he had met with Michael Novakov from the Ohio Development Services Agency about ways to improve Wauseon's chances for success in gaining funds from the Downtown Revitalization Program's grants. While Novakov noted that Wauseon's application for the grant did look good for the most part, he did offer suggestions to help the city receive the grant that had failed to get this past year. These suggestions were the inclusion of projects that would benefit the city's community as a whole and that council commit to setting aside funds for development. Police Chief Keith Torbet reported that the department is about ready to publish the Lexipol Standards Manual and that the department has recently been working with the Healthy Choice caring Communities Coalition to secure extra enforcement the night before Thanksgiving. The department has also been working with Lights for Lives that was put out by District 1 Ohio State Highway Patrol for the six county area to do produce extra traffic enforcement in the area. Code Administrator Tom Hall reported that the Board of Zoning Appeals had met and discussed the number of parking spaces for the new Dollar General store. With all sides in agreement, work on the new store is ready to begin. Director of Public Service Dennis Richardson explained the two pieces of legislation that were to be presented under first reading that pertain to the agreements with Arcadis for two separate projects. One is for a project at the Water Reclamation Plant and the other an Emergency Action Plan and Operations for the Water Treatment Plant. Richardson also explained the drainage and inspection of the large elevated water tank on Shoop Avenue and noted that it will be repainted both inside and outside sometime in the summer of 2014. Director of Finance Jamie Giguere reported that she had distributed the 2014 Annual Appropriation budget at the Committee of the Whole meeting held on November 27. Giguere also provided the November financial reports and the year to date income tax report to council. Director of Law Thomas McWatters III reported his completion of the review of the Lexipol Standards Policy Manual and also explained legislation being presented under first reading as it pertained to health insurance, wage and compensation plans, liability insurance, and memorandums of understanding with the police unions. Having heard updates from the two committees as well as the department head reports, council went on to address legislative matters. The first of these was Ordinance 2013-12, 2014 Annual Appropriation Budget. Council passed the motion, with funds to-

taling $12,321,977.00, on first reading. Ordinance 2013-13, amending section 148.11 and 148.12 of the Codified Ordinances of Wauseon as they pertain to the wage and compensation plan, as well Ordinance 2013-14, amending sections 147.08 and 147.20 of the Codified Ordinances of the City of Wauseon as they pertain to the Health Insurance PPO an MDHP Plans, both passed on first reading as well. Resolution 2013-33, authorizing the mayor to enter into an agreement with Public Entities Pool for casualty, liability, fire, and property damage insurance was declared an emergency, passed, and is now in effect. Also passing under emergency language and now in effect was Resolution 201334, authorizing the mayor to enter into an agreement with Medical Mutual for health insurance coverage. Resolution 2013-35 was also passed as an emergency. The resolution authorizes the mayor to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the City's Ohio Patrolmen's Benevolent Association Command Officers, Patrol Officers, and Records Technicians and Full-Time Dispatchers Unions. Resolution 2013-36, authorizing the mayor to enter into an agreement with Arcadis for Engineering Services for the design bidding, and construction related to the primary settling tank and flocculation clarified equipment replacement at the City's water reclamation plant passed on first reading. Similarly, Resolution 2013-37, authorizing the mayor to enter into an agreement with Arcadis for development of an Emergency Action Plan and Operations, Maintenance, and Inspection Manual for the City's underground raw water reservoirs also passed on first reading. With no legislation for second or third reading, council went on to hear new business. The 2014 Schedule of Council Meetings as well as a motion to authorize the Director of Finance to pay all bills possible before December 31, 2013 were both approved alongside a motion to accept the reappointments of Shane Chamberlin and Fred Allen to the Volunteer Fire Fighters Dependent's Board for the year 2014. Chamber of Commerce gift certificates in the amount of $50 were also approved to be given to full time employees and contracted department heads as Christmas Gifts. A motion to authorize the mayor to enter into an agreement with Jill Hojnaki pertaining to the removal of the dead ash tree on her property located at 420 N. Shoop Avenue was approved with a 5-1 vote, with Councilor Fred Allen providing the descending vote. Before the close of the meeting, Mayor Shaw noted that it the Christmas Parade held on November 28 had enjoyed both a nice turnout and nice floats and thanks all who participated.

CHURCH & SPIRITUAL NEWS

Devotional Thought / Fellowship of Christian Athletes
BY: REX STUMP - JEOPARDIZING INTEGRITY
In a NBA game between the Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers, Coach Jason Kidd found his team trailing near the end of regulation. Out of timeouts, Kidd wanted time for his assistant coach to draw up one last play. Kidd got cunning. In video footage, it appears that Kidd asks his player, Tyshawn Taylor, to hit him. Taylor then walks into him, and Kidd spills a drink he had been holding all over the floor. As the floor crew worked to clean up the spill, a Nets assistant quickly drew up a play. In a post-game interview, Coach Jason Kidd was asked to explain what happened. He blamed it on sweaty hands. The cup slipped out of my hand, Kidd said. I was getting tired. Sweaty palms. In the heat of the battle youre trying to get guys in and out of the game, and the coke fell out of my hand. Really? This is coming from one of the best recently retired players who worked hard all four quarters? Tired from what? He wasnt running up and down the court. After being fined $50,000, the truth came out. He addressed the incident to reporters later in the week by saying, The league fined me for something that I probably shouldnt have done. Coach Jason Kidd was asked if he regretted the unusual move and why he decided to go with it. He said, Its about trying to win and those guys in that locker room, and I tried to put those guys in a position to get a basket, a good look and we did. Did he just say probably? Coach, please leave the word probably out of the sentence! You SHOULDNT have done it! Period. No remorse, no sincere apology. If he had not been fined, would he have ever commented on the event? It seems that winning is more important than integrity. Heres the problem, a win will last for a moment...until the next game. Your integrity travels with you to your grave! People tend to forget wins and losses, but they will never forget your character. I guess we didnt learn much because this week the NFL fined Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin $100,000 for interfering with a kickoff return in a game against the Baltimore Ravens. Coach Tomlin was standing on the white stripe that borders the playing field and took a step onto the field during Jacoby Jones kickoff return. The good news is that Coach Tomlin apologized and said, As I stated, I take full responsibility for my actions, and I apologize for causing negative attention to the Pittsburgh Steelers organization. He also said, Its an inexcusable blunder on my part. I understand with my position comes the charge of preserving and protecting the integrity of the game of football, and I think probably my biggest error on Thursday night is not realizing that play jeopardized the integrity of the game from a perception standpoint. Coach, again thank you for apologizing, but its not just about the integrity of the game, its also the integrity of your name. For those who are believers in Christ, we compete at a higher level. Our integrity, doing the right thing, is in our spiritual DNA. We must do all we can to protect the integrity of HIS name - Jesus Christ. We must stop looking for shortcuts and loopholes. Quit bending the rules or justifying your techniques. Is the win on your resume that important? Is the trophy really that special? King David wanted a victory! He wanted to build a temple to worship God. But God said, No. Instead, Davids son would build the temple. So what would David pass on to his son? David gave his resources back to God, praised God that Solomon would build the temple, and then said an incredible prayer to God. In the midst of this prayer David said, I know, my God, that you examine our hearts and rejoice when you find integrity there. Catch that? God examines our hearts - he knows us! And what makes God happy? Victories? Possessions? Power? Nope...God rejoices when He finds integrity in our hearts! So...do a heart exam. Is there integrity there? Or are you just trying to find a way to win, regardless of the cost? If integrity is an issue, seek God for help. Find someone you trust who can hold you accountable. Together, be a person of integrity. For more reading - Proverbs 10:9, Proverbs 20:7, Titus 2:7.

Wauseon Chamber Of Commerce Marks Educator Of The Year ...

Matheny, along with his wife Sandy spearheaded two trips to provide assistance and needed supplies to the victims dislocated from their homes and communities. This year's recipient, Mayor Matheny, was unable to attend the presentation due to illness, and was honorably represented by his oldest son Marc and his wife Sandy. In Marc's address to the attendees of tonight's ceremony, he spoke reverently of his father and how grateful Mayor Matheny was to receive such a special award from the community he cherishes and loves. Marc also noted how deeply his father cared for those who served under his administration, and noted with a smile how the Mayor would always personally sing his favorite song "Happy Birthday" to every member of his team, in every department throughout the city. Mayor Matheny's wife Sandy also addressed the banquet and spoke of the love city employees had for the Mayor as well. As an illustration, Sandy recalled the inscription on the retirement plaque presented to the Mayor from the members of the Public Works Department which stated "We would follow you anywhere...We love you man!" Mayor Jerry Matheny currently resides in Wauseon with his wife Sandy. Jerry and Sandy have three children, Marc, Scott, and Chris and are the proud grandparents of four grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren Residents interested in nominating individuals for next year's awards may nd nomination forms and other relevant information on the Chamber of Commerce website, www.wauseonchamber.com. Mark Mercer can be reached at publisher@thevillagereporter.com

As Ombudsman, Jerry served as a liaison between residents and facility staff, as well as ensuring representation for residents within the Medicare and Medicaid systems as needed. One shining example of Mayor Matheny's spirit of volunteerism and selessness took place in 1992, when historic oods devastated east-central Iowa. Mayor

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS LONELY?
The Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons can often be times of loneliness for many. Loneliness though not a seasonal thing, is often exacerbated by times when people do get together and this upcoming Christmas season is no different. Many people struggle with lonelinessfrom the rich and famous to the poor and unknown. Heres a list of some famous people who have been honest about their loneliness: Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway confessed, Loneliness is my least favorite thing about life. The thing that Im most worried about is just being alone without anybody to care for or someone who will care for me. Joss Whedon, director of the movie The Avengers, said, Loneliness is about the scariest thing out there. Scientist Albert Einstein wrote, It is strange to be known so universally, and yet to be so lonely. Writer Ernest Hemingway wrote, I live in a vacuum that is as lonely as a radio tube when the batteries are dead and there is no current to plug into. Marilyn Monroe said, Sometimes I think the only people who stay with me and really listen are people I hire, people I pay. Lets all do our best this Christmas to help those who suffer from loneliness, lets include a lonely heart at our table, in our conversation or in some creative and caring way, may we fill a lonely heart with love, laughter and life. Lets also remember for the believer the promise of Jesus to be with us no matter where we go or end up; Matthew 28:20 (NIV) And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR ... Chamber President Tim Sepesy (L) with Marc (R) and Sandy Matheny (C), accepting the Citizen of the Year award on behalf of Jerry Matheny, this year's recipient. Jerry was unable to attend due to illness.

Local Author Joy Bowser Will Host A Book Talk & Signing At The Wauseon Public Library
ter with her husband, Bill. Bowser shares, I am a native of Northwest Ohio. I have lived in the Liberty Center area all of my life. From McDonalds to ofce assistant with some factory stops in between; no one would have guessed the turn my life would take when a book emerged from my heart to inspire and encourage women in their marriages. Beginning the writing in 1998- thinking the book was done, receiving rejection after rejection and putting the project away, totally giving up until 2008 when after 6 months of illness caused me to leave my factory job- God reminded me and nudged me to try again! Gods timing was perfect, the manuscript was picked up by a Christian publishing company and nished under contract with the 10 more years of living added to it. Each page is an act of faith, based on scripture. Using examples from my own marriage as a guide, A WIFE AND A WITNESS encourages Christian wives to walk in a way to lead their spouse closer to God and closer as a couple. My husband Bill and I have been married for 33 years, are members of a local congregation and have raised three daughters. We are in the process of spoiling eight grandchildren. I have been a brownie leader, softball coach. I am currently a church pianist, Sunday School teacher and youth group advisor. For more information on Joy Bowser or her upcoming Book Talk & Signing, please email the Wauseon Public Library at amy.murphy@oplin.org or call 419335-6626.

Continue Unwinding At The Wauseon Public Librarys Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Discussion On December 16
WAUSEONContinue unwinding at the Wauseon Public Librarys Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Discussion on Monday, December 16 at 6:30 p.m. The group will be discussing Unwholly by Neal Shusterman. Unwholly is the sequel to Unwind and the second book in the Unwind Dystology Series. The book discussion is free and open to everyone. According to the book jacket, Thanks to Connor, Lev, and Risaand their high-prole revolt at Happy Jack Harvest Camppeople can no longer turn a blind eye to unwinding. Ridding society of troublesome teens while simultaneously providing much-needed tissues for transplant might be convenient, but its morality has nally been brought into question. However, unwinding has become big business, and there are powerful political and corporate interests that want to see it not only continue, but also expand to the unwinding of prisoners and the impoverished. Cam is a product of unwinding; made entirely out of the parts of other unwinds, he is a teen who does not technically exist. A futuristic Frankenstein, Cam struggles with a search for identity and meaning and wonders if a rewound being can have a soul. And when the actions of a sadistic bounty hunter cause Cams fate to become inextricably bound with the fates of Connor, Risa, and Lev, hell have to question humanity itself. The library has ordered copies of the book, so each group member may have one. Please stop by the library, and pick up your copy today. For more information on the book discussion, please contact the Wauseon Public Library at amy.murphy@oplin.org or call 419-335-6626.

WAUSEONLocal author Joy Bowser will host a book talk and signing at the Wauseon Public Library on Saturday, December 14 at 10:30 a.m. in the librarys Reading Room. She will share excerpts from her book, A Wife and a WitnessLoving Your Spouse to the Lord. The Book Talk & Signing are free, and the public is invited to attend. Bowser will have books available for purchase and signing. Refreshments will also be available during the Book Talk. According to Bowser, This book represents years of intense study in the Bible and following the Holy Spirits lead to become the kind of wife that my husband needed and the Lord could use. This was at a time when there seemed to be no other books on the market to help me in those areas. Bowser outlines specic biblical concepts to help build a stronger marriage, especially if a spouse is not saved. Joy Bowser is a wife, mother, and grandmother. She lives in Liberty Cen-
