Bridgewater College Education Department Lesson Plan Date and Title of Lesson: Subject Area(s): Social Studies VA:

SOL(s) 3.7 Name________________________________

Around the World Grade Level(s)/Course: 3rd Grade The students will develop map skills by a.) Positioning and labeling the seven continents and five oceans to create a world map.

Content Objective(s) 1. The students will be able to label each continent and ocean correctly. 2. The students will be able to position each continent and ocean correctly.

IEP Goal/Objective: Accommodations/Diff erentiation I will make the appropriate accommodations for the students in my class who need them. I will make the appropriate accommodations for the students in my class who need them.

Lesson Assessment (based on objectives) The students will be given a blank map of the world and the students will have to label them correctly by knowing where each continent and ocean is located. Materials Cut outs of each continent and ocean (11 altogether) Markers A big piece of paper A globe Glue or tape A ball that has a world map on it Overhead or SMARTboard access Homework sheet (http://bogglesworldesl.com/continents_worksheets.htm)

Integration of Technology 1. I will show them a map of the world on the SMARTboard. 2. I will also show them where is country and ocean is located on the SMARTboard so that they will be able to see it better. 3. My individual cutouts will be shown on the SMARTboard so that we may do them together.

Anticipatory Set (Focus) When we get ready to start the lesson, I will have a beach ball that has the world map on it. I will tell students that I am going to throw the ball to one person and then they will look to see where their right index finger landed on. Then they will pass the ball around until everyone has had a chance to deceive the ball. The last person will throw the ball back to me. I will then tell the students, see how many different continents and oceans that there are around the world?

Accommodati ons/ Differentiatio n I will make the appropriate accommodatio ns for the students in my class who need them.

Access/Review Prior Knowledge

By the time we are ready to begin our lesson, the students will already know the names of the continents and the oceans. I will ask some of the students to give me the names of the continents as well as the oceans.

I will make the appropriate accommodatio ns for the students in my class who need them.

Topic presentation (What will the students be told?) I will begin by showing the globe and where each continent and ocean is located. We will discuss how the big land masses are the continents and the water masses are the oceans. I will then have the students name off each of the continents and the oceans so that I am able to make sure that they know them. While they are telling me the names, I will be writing them on the board. Next, I will bring up a blank map on the SMARTboard so that the students may see what it looks like on a sheet of paper. Once I have brought up the map, we will begin to look at each continent and ocean individually. We will begin looking at them beginning with the continents. The first piece of information that we will look at will be Australia. Then, we will take a look at Asia. Next, we will look at Europe. Then, we will look at the continent of Africa. Next, we will look at Antarctica. Then, we will look at South America. Finally, with the continents, we will look at North America. (While we are going through each continent, I will point and show them where they are located on the blank map that will be showing on the SMARTboard.) Then, we will begin looking at the oceans (as I point and show them where they are located on the blank map on the SMARTbaord). The first ocean that we will begin looking at will be the Indian Ocean. Next, we will look at the Southern Ocean. Then, we will look at the Arctic Ocean. Next, we will look at the Atlantic Ocean. Finally, we will look at the Pacific Ocean (noting that the Pacific Ocean is also on the other side of Australia because the world is round). Each student will then receive 12 cutouts (one for each of the continents and oceans). Together, we will write each continent on the correct cutout that I have provided them. For example, the continent that looks like North America, the students will write North America somewhere on it- where it is legible). At the same time the students are writing on their cutouts, I will cutouts being shown on the SMARTboard doing the exact same thing that the students are doing. After we have written the names of all of the continents and oceans, I will give the students a few minutes to color their continents and oceans any way that they want to. Then, each student will have one big sheet of paper where they will glue the continents and oceans together which will represent the world map. We will then put their names on the big sheets of paper that they have just created the world map on and display them outside of the classroom. I will then assign the students homework. It will be a worksheet where they have to fill out a blank map of the world that has the names of the continents already on the bottom of the page so that students may refer to it if they need it.

Time I will make the appropriate accommodatio ns for the students in my class who need them.

Modeling When I go over where each continent and ocean are located on the map. Guided Practice I will model where each continent and ocean are for them in the SMARTboard. Checking for Understanding (Formative Evaluation) Independent Practice Each student will then receive 12 cutouts (one for each of the continents and oceans). Together, we will write each continent on the correct cutout that I have provided them. For example, the continent that looks like North America, the students will write North America somewhere on itwhere it is legible).

Closure Today we learned where each continent is located on the world map as well as where each ocean is located. We also learned how to spell each continent and ocean correctly.

I will make the appropriate accommodatio ns for the students in my class who need them.
