RhetoricalAnalysis:Ted NugentDebatesCauseof GunViolenceon PiersMorganLive

The video Ted Nugent Educates Piers Limey Morgan About Sucking On His Machine Gun was posted on the 21st of December in 2012. This video shows a portion of a debate between well-known rocker-turned-gun rights activist and Liberal based debater Piers Morgan of CNN. The debate as a whole is over weather gun violence is caused by the legalization of concealed permits or caused by the corrupt justice systems that release unworthy criminals which in turn fill the streets with violence again. The video was a portion of a segment aired on Piers Morgan Live on CNN. The intended audience for original debate viewed on the CNN show consisted of an audience of 590,000 viewers estimated, finishing the year as the top show on the network, this coming after a decrease in viewers through the entirety of 2012 (MediaBistro). The 25-59 age range (Telegraph) of the show watching this particular debate would be drawn in by the idea of danger within the country while wanting to hear facts on the reasoning behind the many issues of violence that had contaminated the country around the time of the debate. Some viewers would already have a perspective that couldnt be metamorphosed or changed while some would watch the show as a skeptic or unsure of the cause of the recently active violence. The video clip soon was posted on Youtube where I discovered it. The video received just under 75 hundred viewers. The viewers from the Youtube video were likely intrigued by the topic of gun control and also by the opposition of the participants in the debate. Ted Nugent, being

an ex-rocker with a very hostile approach to most debates, and Piers Morgan, who attempts to frequently tries to reason and calmly explain his viewpoints to his guest.

The video I used starts with Ted Nugent mocking Piers Morgan by talking in his English accent. He calls him his Limey friend and goes on to state that he believes that what the government is trying to do is disarm American citizens and make himself and them helpless and more vulnerable to violence that has created a paranoia among the American people. He uses the words drop dead in his statement referring to the government or whoever wants to take his guns away. He claims that gun owners will find a way to beat you if you attempt to disarm them. Piers Morgan uses Nugents words as a way to establish his known fact that an average of 80 Americans a day die from gun related violence. A sense of frustration and disapproval of what Piers is claiming overcome Nugents approach to the debate and he abruptly interrupts Piers exclaiming that of those 80 daily casualties, 78 of them, according to the Uniform criminal reported by the FBI and the United Nations (UN) study on violent crime, are victims to criminals with a history of crime but are let out of their cages by corrupt judges and prosecutors who know the recidivism is out of control and know the risk of a second criminal act. Piers Morgan attempts to chime in on what Nugent is saying but is met with a kiss my ass from the former rockstar. Ted Nugent then goes on to say that where you have the highest gun control there is more crime and where you have the lesser gun control there is less crime and begs Piers to pick one of those sides and to quit ignoring that statistic.

The way the segment is set up is to be a back and forth debate. Ted Nugent uses the his knowledge gained from being involved with the National Rifle Association (NSA) as a way to appeal to ethos by establishing reliable sources to back up his information. Nugent uses numbers taken from violent and criminal reports given to the UN which is one of the most respected organizations in the world. Nugent can relate to his targeted audience because his appearance and southern lifestyle would appeal to most of the audience that is on the anti gun control side of the argument. His credentials of being on the board of the NRA and having that background would appeal to a larger audience nationwide and would amount to much more than the southern region.

Piers Morgan establishes an ethos by having an entitlement to the show. His show would have a large amount of viewers who agree with his liberal perspective on politics. Other than entitlement, Piers has a well grammatical diction as opposed to the southern slang Nugent uses. Being a well-spoken debater, Piers would gain ground in the debate by establishing an intelligent diction during his argument. Morgans calm sense of self is more appealing to the targeted audience too, the chaotic and almost violent argument demonstrated by Ted Nugent would give his audience an uneasy feeling related to the emotions that criminal shooter may have.

The video Ted Nugent Educates Piers Limey Morgan About Sucking On His Machine Gun appeals to the targeted audience for Ted Nugent because the video I chose only illustrates the bias the uploader had when he or she posted the partial clip of the debate to Youtube. The name of the video can easily be seen as a way to propose the hero and the villain. The fact that the video states Ted Nugent educates Piers Morgan will let the audience know beforehand that the favored side is Nugents. So as Youtube appeals to Nugents approach, the original would appeal to the opposite perspective by appealing to Piers Morgans side of the argument. The audience would receive respectable credentials to both debaters and would also be lured by the emotional aspects that are demonstrated throughout the argument. Both sides can be seen demonstrating emotional and relatable topics that would hit close to home to some viewers who may have been involved or know someone who has been involved in a gun related incident.
