2. (a) How is drag and lift force caused on a body immersed in a moving fluid.
Explain with neat sketches.
(b) A flat plate 2x2 m moves at 30km/hr in stationary air of density 1.15kg/m3.
If the coefficient of drag and lift are 0.15 and 0.75 respectively, determine:
i. The lift force
ii. The drag force. [8+8]
3. (a) Explain with a neat sketch the working of a centrifugal compressor and obtain
an expression for the work done.
(b) A centrifugal compressor delivers 50 kg of air per minute at a pressure of 2
bar and 97 C. The intake pressure and temperature of the air is 1 bar and 15
C. If no heat is lost to the surrounding, find
i. index of compression and
ii. power requied if the compression is isothermal. Take R=287 J/kg K.[8+8]
4. (a) Discuss the means of improving the efficiency of a gas turbine working on
simple Brayton cycle.
(b) In a gas turbine plant, air is compressed in a single stage compressor from 1
bar to 9 bar and from an initial temperature of 300 K. The same air is then
heated to a temperature of 800 K and then expanded in the turbine. The air
is then reheated to a temperature of 800 K and then expanded in the second
turbine. Find the maximum power that can be obtained from the installation,
if the mass of air circulated per second is 2 kg. Take Cp =1.005kJ/kg K for
air. [8+8]
5. (a) Explain the differences between an ideal gas turbine plant and an actual gas
turbine plant.
(b) Determine the efficiency of a gas turbine plant fitted with a heat exchanger
of 75% effectiveness. The pressure ratio is 4:1 and the compression is carried

out in two stages of equal pressure ratio with intercooling back to initial tem-
perature of 290K. The maximum temperature is 925K. The turbine isentropic
efficiency is 88% and isentropic efficiency of each compressor is 85%. For air
γ = 1.4 and Cp =1.005kJ/kg K. [8+8]
6. (a) Derive an expression for the weight of steam discharged through a nozzle.
(b) Steam at a pressure of 7kg/cm2 abs and 0.9 dry enters a nozzle of throat area
1.4cm2 . It leaves this nozzle at a pressure of 1.06kg/cm2 abs. Calculate the
weight of steam discharged per sec and the diameter of exit of the nozzle for
maximum discharge condition. [8+8]
7. (a) What is the working principle of rocket propulsion? How does it differ from
jet propulsion?
(b) Give the disadvantages of solid propellant rockets.
(c) A turbojet engine flying at a speed of 800 km/hr consumes air at the rate of
45kg/s. Calculate
i. jet exit velocity, the enthalpy change for the nozzle is 44.5 kcal/kg and
the velocity coefficient is 0.95.
ii. fuel flow in kg/hr and thrust specific fuel consumption assuming that air
fuel ratio is 80
iii. thermal efficiency of plant given combustion efficiency 95% and calorific
value of fuel used is 10,500 kcal/kg
iv. propulsive power and thrust H.P
v. propulsive efficiency and overall efficiency. [6+4+6]
