English Language

About the course


English Language is the study of texts that surround us each and every day, and the functions, purposes and hidden meanings of the language that we encounter. Studying English Language will ensure that you will never look at a piece of text in the same way again. You will be encouraged to pick apart texts and explore a range of linguistic issues, such as why men and women speak differently, why we abbreviate in text messages and how adverts are designed to persuade without you even realising it The AS course aims to provide you with a comprehensive and intensive understanding of linguistic concepts, and will introduce to a range of texts, from newspaper articles to political speeches, even recipes and fairytales. You will also have the chance to produce two of your own texts. At A2, you will consolidate your knowledge of the English language, by exploring how the uses and meanings of words have changed over time, and how we acquire language in the rst place. You will also complete your own investigation of language in an area of your choice.

How will I be assessed?


Assessment at AS Level Unit 1 is assessed by external examination, in the summer term. Unit 2 is assessed through coursework, which is internally marked and externally moderated. Assessment at A2 Level Unit 3 is assessed by external examination, in the summer term. Unit 4 is assessed through coursework, which is internally marked and externally moderated.

Additional minimum entry requirements:


C in GCSE English at Higher Tier or English Language.

Is this course for me?


This course will be of interest to anyone who cant help but analyse everything they see, read or hear. It is about examining words and their meanings, and exploring how writers set out to inuence their readers through their choice of language. Excellent analytical skills are essential, as well effective communication skills. The course will also give you the opportunity to write creatively in a number of different genres, so accurate writing skills are a necessity.

Where can it take me?


This course will develop both your skills as an analyst and a writer, and make you a more effective communicator, so you will gain access to a range of potential career paths. Previous students have gone on to study English and its related courses at degree level and have pursued careers in Journalism, Television Production and Education.
