Treasurer Here in Cameron Highlands we are fortunate in that our forest

George Theseira
covered highlands provide a rich treasure trove where we can find
Committee Members delicate orchids, cool waterfalls, vibrantly coloured birds and
breath-taking scenery. But our mountains are more than just a
Dr.Cheam May Choo beautiful place to look at and visit, they play a vitally important role
Amran Nadzar Khan
in providing us with our water supplies. The freshwater from
Kaliyannan
Laura Lau mountains supports unique ecosystems and biodiversity. The forests
Ramasamy on their slopes help keep our environment healthy and clean. Millions
Rashpal Kaur of people in Malaysia depend on mountains for their physical, cultural
and economic survival.
Mountains, believe it or not, are very fragile environment. Now, more
than ever, they are under threat from development such as land
clearing, which if carried out badly can lead to serious soil erosion,
flash floods, landslides and muddy rivers. What goes on in our
highlands affects us all, whether it means disruption to our water
supply, damage to our environment, or even a threat to life itself. So
much depends on keeping our fragile mountain ecosystems healthy.
So we have a choice – either we can continue to allow degradation of
our mountains and their resources. Our environment will deteriorate,
not just in the mountains themselves, but everywhere. People’s well
being will suffer. Or we can do something about it. We can work in
partnership to ensure that our highlands are protected and managed
in a sustainable manner.
Here at REACH we are trying, within our limited resources to do
what we can to raise awareness of the importance of protecting our
highlands and their fragile ecosystems. If we act now it is still not
too late to protect Cameron Highlands and their precious resources
they provide. Let’s give them the respect and protection they
deserve.
