PART B (5 16 = 80 Marks) 11. (a) A nozzle is a device for increasing the velocity of a steadily flowing stream. At the inlet to a certain nozzle, the enthalpy of the fluid passing is 3000 kJ/kg and the velocity is 60 m/sec. At the discharge end, the enthalpy is 2762 kJ/kg. The nozzle is horizontal and there is negligible heat loss from it (i) (ii) Find the velocity at the exit of the nozzle.

If the inlet area is 0.1 m2 and the specific volume at inlet is 0.187 m3/kg, find the mass flow rate.

(iii) If the specific volume at the nozzle exit is 0.498 m3/kg, find the exit area of the nozzle. Or (b)

In an air compressor, air flows steadily at the rate of 15 kg/min. The air enters the compressor at 5 m/sec with a pressure of 1 bar and a specific volume of 0.5 m3/kg. It leaves the compressor at 7.5 m/sec with a pressure of 7 bar and a specific volume of 0.15 m3/kg. The internal energy of the air leaving the compressor is 165 kJ/kg, which is greater than that of the air entering. The cooling water in the compressor jackets absorbs heat from the air at the rate of 125 kJ/sec. Find

(a)

Dry saturated steam at 10 bar is supplied to a prime mover and the exhaust takes place at 0.2 bar. Determine the Rankine efficiency, efficiency ratio and specific steam consumption of the prime mover, if the indicated thermal efficiency is 20%. Also find the percentage change in the Rankine efficiency, if the steam is initially 90% dry.

(b) In a regenerative cycle, having one feed water heater, the dry saturated steam is supplied from the boiler at a pressure of 30 bar and the condenser pressure is 1 bar. The steam is bled at a pressure of 5 bar. Determine the amount of bled steam per kg of steam supplied and the efficiency of the cycle. What would be the efficiency without regenerative feed heating? Also determine the percentage increase in efficiency due to regeneration. Derive Maxwells equations and TdS equations. Or (b) (i) (ii) 15. (a) Derive Clausius-Clapeyron equation.

14.

(a)

Write a short note on compressibility charts.

Saturated air leaving the cooling section of an air-conditioning system at 287 K at a rate of 50 m3/min is mixed adiabatically with the outside air at 305 K and 60 percent relative humidity at a rate of 20 m3/min. Assuming that the mixing process occurs at a pressure of 1 atm, determine the specific humidity, the relative humidity, the dry-bulb temperature, and the volume flow rate of the mixture.

(b)

A room contains air at 1 atm, 299 K, and 70 percent relative humidity. Using the formulae, determine (i) (ii) the specific humidity,

The enthalpy (in kJ/kg dry air)

(iii) The wet-bulb temperature. (iv) (v)

The dew-point temperature, and

The specific volume of the air (in m3/kg dry air) Also determine the above using psychrometric chart.
