NEW YORK Former Washington Wizards center Jason Collins told the
Washington Blade on Tuesday that his sexual orientation is not a factor in the fact he remains unsigned more than six months after coming out. Theres a lot of speculation as to why I havent signed, Collins said during an interview that took place as he attended a Manhattan fundraiser for the LGBT advocacy group United for Equality in Sports
and Entertainment. I choose to focus on what I can control and thats how hard I work out. Collins on April 29 became the rst male athlete who actively played in a major American professional sports league to come out as gay when Sports Illustrated published his op-ed on its

even large quantities of the paper. Maryland and other states have passed laws that make it a crime to remove large quantities of free newspapers if the intent is to deprive others from reading them or obtaining them. D.C. has yet to adopt such a law, police ofcials have said. Brown said that with the vandalism appearing to be increasing, she plans to more aggressively report the incidents to police at the time the delivery drivers discover the damaged boxes. According to Brown and Ryan, in addition to the excrement smearing, vandals have started to smash the plastic window on the boxes and break off a clip that holds one copy of the paper against the window so readers can read the headlines and determine if a new issue has been delivered. Ryan and Goldsmith said they take steps to repair and replace the broken windows and clips on the boxes as fast as they can, but in certain locations the vandals return and break them almost as soon as the repaired boxes are put back on the street. If a hate crime is a factor, one of my concerns is what if a reader is taking a Blade out and this hateful, spiteful person whos kicking out the window on the box decides to attack a Blade reader?

who is a former chief of staff for D.C. Council Chair Phil Mendelson (D-AtLarge) before Mendelson became chair. Graham, 68, has been among the Councils strongest advocates for LGBT rights and people with HIV/AIDS. Prior to winning election to the Council, Graham served for more than 15 years as executive director of the WhitmanWalker Clinic, the citys largest private, non-prot organization providing services to people with HIV/AIDS. Grahams three opponents have expressed support for LGBT equality. Weaver, who ran and lost to Graham in the 2010 Democratic primary, has been the most outspoken this year among the three candidates challenging Graham on the issue of ethics. In a statement released Monday immediately after Graham announced he was running for re-election Weaver raised the issue of the Councils decision in February of this year to reprimand Graham over an allegation that he improperly intervened in the negotiating process for a city contract with a developer. The Councilmembers decision to seek re-election reects just how out of touch he has become about the importance of the publics trust in our government, Weaver said. The Council voted 11-2 to issue the reprimand after the citys newly created independent ethics board ruled that Graham, while not violating any law, breached a code of ethics as a Council member by intervening in the contract process. Graham has strongly disputed the claim that he acted improperly. He has said he favored one developer over another for a Metro-related project in his ward based on the belief that the company he favored was better qualied to do the work. Political observers have said the

death in Mauritania, Sudan, Iran, Saudi Arabia and northern Nigeria. To criticize the criminalization of LGBT status is not cultural imperialism, said Power. To deny gays and lesbians the right to live freely and to threaten them with discrimination and even death is not a form of moral or religious Puritanism. Its in fact barbarism. Power also stressed the death of former South African President Nelson Mandela last week reminds us of what one fearless and passionate voice can achieve when raised in a righteous cause. Her comments came hours after President Obama made a veiled reference to LGBT rights during his speech at the memorial service for the anti-Apartheid champion in Johannesburg. National Security Advisor Susan Rice last week said in a speech she gave during Human Rights Firsts annual summit in D.C. that LGBT rights remain an essential part of U.S. foreign policy. Lesbian Russian journalist Masha Gessen and Juliet Mphande, executive director of Rainka Zambia, spoke during the meeting with Power before the Washington Blade and the handful of reporters from other media outlets were asked to leave the room. Turkish Parliamentarian Melda Onur, Wilson Castaera of the Colombian LGBT advocacy group Caribe Armativo and Center for Global Equality Chair Mark Bromley were among those who also attended the roundtable.

Rep. RANDY FORBES (R-Va.) has expressed concerns over Republican money going to support gay congressional candidates.
Another gay candidate seeking to carry the Republican banner in a bid for a congressional seat not mentioned in the Politico piece is Dan Innis, a University of New Hampshire administrator in a same-sex marriage whos seeking to unseat Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-N.H.). In a statement provided to the Blade, DeMaio said he focused on winning his congressional race and not the comments from the Virginia politician. Under Mr. Forbes, San Diegans are not focused on sexual orientation, DeMaio said. website. The former Wizards centers interview with the Blade is the rst time he has spoken to an LGBT media outlet since he publicly declared his sexual orientation. CBS News over the summer reported the Detroit Pistons and the Brooklyn Nets passed on signing Collins. The deadline for teams to send their playoff rosters to the NBA is March 1. Thats the ultimate deadline, Collins told the Blade. But up until that date Im going to continue to work out, continue to train. I consider myself a free agent and Im ready when and if an NBA team calls my name. Collins has become an increasingly visible LGBT rights advocate since coming out. He has attended events for the Human
Rights Campaign; GLAAD; the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network; the Trevor Project and the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. He also marched in Bostons annual Pride parade in June with Massachusetts Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy, III, with whom he lived while they attended Stanford University. Collins in May headlined a Manhattan fundraiser for the Democratic National Committees Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Leadership Council with First Lady Michelle Obama. He introduced Macklemore and Ryan Lewis at the MTV Video Music Awards in August before they performed their song Same Love that advocates for marriage rights for same-sex couples. Collins spoke with the Blade during the United for Equality in Sports and Entertainment fundraiser that took
place hours after he joined retired tennis champion Martina Navratilova, South African activist Thandeka Tumi Mkhuma, intersex advocate Huda Viloria, Anastasia Smirnova of the Russian LGBT Network and U.N. Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic on a United Nations panel that gay MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts moderated. The former Wizards center described Navratilova, who came out as a lesbian in 1981, as one of my heroes. Collins said Navratilova e-mailed him after he came out. The two met face-toface for the rst time on Tuesday before the U.N. panel. Growing up she was so dominant, such a great role model and an example of someone who lived her life on and off the court, he said. [She] exemplied
everything as far as being a winner and then also empowers others by just being vocal. I cant say enough good things about her. President Obama, NBA Commissioner David Stern, Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld, Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers, Oprah Winfrey and D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray are among those who applauded Collins for coming out. Several of the former Wizards centers then-D.C. teammates also praised his decision to publicly disclose his sexual orientation. I wasnt expecting a call from the president when I made my announcement, Collins said. I was extremely humbled to get a call from him and so many other celebrities, in addition to friends and former teammates, coaches, fans. Its been really overwhelming the response to my announcement.

orientation into its constitution. Mandela in 1994 nominated Edwin Cameron, a gay man with HIV, alongside four others to sit on South Africas highest court. I became the rst openly gay judge in South Africas history and, at that time, one of the very few openly gay judges anywhere in the world, wrote Cameron in an op-ed for the South African website Mambaonline in July that he provided to the Washington Blade. Mr. Mandela was not only happy to appoint me he did so with emphatic personal warmth, which he personally expressed to me and to others. South African LGBT rights advocate Phumzile Mtetwa also recalled Mandelas LGBT legacy in an op-ed the South African newspaper Mail and Guardian published in July while the former South African president was in critical condition in a Pretoria hospital for what his doctors described as a recurring lung infection. Mtetwa noted Mandela was president of the African National Congress in 1993 when it added the extension of rights to LGBT South Africans to its platform. The ANC in 1997 adopted a resolution opposing discrimination based on sexual orientation. Mtetwa wrote Mandela became an important icon of the movement in contrast to Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and other anti-LGBT African heads of state. As a queer activist I will remember uTatu Dalibhunga for the dreams of freedom he symbolized, Mtetwa said. Gavin Hayward, editor of Exit, a South African LGBT newspaper, told the Blade from Johannesburg last week that LGBT South Africans continue to acknowledge Mandelas pro-gay legacy. He noted his own interracial relationship would have been banned under Apartheid. He was such a great man, with such compassion and selessness to devote his life to a cause really for the benet of others, Hayward told the Blade. Thats huge and of course I admire him immensely. God knows where the country would have been if we hadnt had a great man like that around. Obama described Mandela as one of the most inuential, courageous and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this Earth. Through his erce dignity and unbending will to sacrice his own freedom for the freedom of others, Madiba transformed South Africa and moved all of us, the president said. president embodied the promise that human beings and countries can change for the better. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray were among those who also mourned Mandelas death. Nelson Mandela tore down oppression, united a rainbow nation and always walked arm-in-arm with his LGBT brothers and sisters and with all people toward freedom, said Human Rights Campaign President Chad Grifn in a statement. Though every man, woman and child who seeks justice around the world mourns this loss, his vision of an equal future lives on undimmed. Rev. Nancy Wilson, moderator of the Metropolitan Community Churches, described Mandela as one of the greatest leaders in history. Because of Nelson Mandela, South Africa became the rst country in the world to include constitutional protection for same-gender loving persons, she said. As the head of a church with many gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer members in 40 countries, including South Africa, I honor the liberator, Mandela.
President Obama referenced the struggle for gay rights across the world in his speech at Mondays memorial service in South Africa honoring Mandelas life. Obama made the reference to gay rights saying people around the world are still persecuted for who they love when making a generalized statement about the struggle for equality. The struggles that follow the victory of formal equality or universal franchise may not be as lled with drama and moral clarity as those that came before, but they are no less important, Obama said. For around the world today, we still see children suffering from hunger and disease. We still see run-down schools. We still see young people without prospects for the future. Around the world today, men and women are still imprisoned for their political beliefs, and are still persecuted for what they look like, and how they worship, and who they love. That is happening today. In remarks delivered at First National Bank Stadium on a rainy day in Johannesburg, Obama honored Mandela. In his 15-minute speech, Obama said Mandela served as an inspiration in part because his
willingness to admit imperfection encouraged others to make similar endeavors in pursuit of equality. For nothing he achieved was inevitable, Obama said. In the arc of his life, we see a man who earned his place in history through struggle and shrewdness, and persistence and faith. He tells us what is possible not just in the pages of history books, but in our own lives as well. Obama received a big roar of applause from the crowd when he concluded his remarks. In addition to shouting and applause, the sound of the horn made famous during the World Cup, the Vuvuzela, lled the stadium. As Obama walked away from the stage, people rushed through the stands to see him. Also in attendance for the memorial service were rst lady Michelle Obama, former President George W. Bush, former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. President Obama made headlines by shaking the hand of Cuban President Raul Castro, who also spoke.

The Baltimore Eagle, closed for a year now, is expected to re-open as a leather bar under the same name. This is a full-scale redevelopment project that should be completed sometime in 2014 or perhaps 2015. No target date has been set. Ninety percent of real estate development is planning, said Ian Parrish, a Baltimore developer who purchased the building. The architectural plans have now been completed and my team is waiting to execute the plans. He told the Blade that extensive renovations and upgrades to the structure need to take place, including tearing down walls and ceilings. The nal cost of renovations is estimated to exceed $650,000. Some 34 dumpsters were lled with debris from cleaning out the building, which is located at 2022 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. But not everything went to waste. LANSING, Mich. A Michigan member of the Republican National Committee drew criticism last week after saying gays want free health care because theyre dying of AIDS, LGBTQ Nation reports. Dave Agema made the comments while speaking Dec. 5 at the Berrien County Republican Party Holiday Reception according to Equality Michigan. In a speech against same-sex marriage, Agema said during his time with American Airlines, he saw LGBT employees claim someone with AIDS as their partner simply to get medical benets, LGBTQ Nation reports. They want free medical because theyre dying between 30 and 44 years old, he was quoted as having said. To me, its a moral issue. Its a biblical issue. Traditional marriage is where it should be and its in our platform. Those in our party who oppose traditional marriage are wrong. Equality Michigan has called on Republican leaders to denounce Agemas remarks and have him removed as a committee member of the party, LGBTQ Nation reports. It is unconscionable that in 2013 a political gure in a prominent position would feel so comfortable spewing lies about real people in a pathetic attempt to deny fundamental rights to families in Michigan, said Equality Michigans Emily Dievendorf.

As the cold weather hits and the season changes, one of the biggest shifts in behavior I see in the gym is a decline in cardio activity and an increase in weight. Believe me, I understand. Its hard to drag yourself to the gym to do 30 minutes of cardio on a cold snowy day when all you want is to be nestled up with a nice big blanket surrounded by your favorite holiday comfort foods like chocolate chip cookies and peppermint mochas. To ensure you dont fall into the winter doldrums and keep the weight off for the holidays, here are some easy tips on keeping your cardio exciting during the holiday season. Keep moving. While this may seem like a very simple tip, it proves to be very effective for losing weight. Recent studies have found that the more you move during non-exercise physical activity the more calories you can burn in a day. So whats non-exercise physical activity? Try dancing while putting away the dishes or folding laundry. When on a work conference call or talking to a friend on your cell phone, stay standing or walk around the room. When leaving or entering your apartment building opt for taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Do intervals. Intervals are a fantastic way to drop weight in a short amount of time. According to the Journal of Obesity, doing 90 minutes of interval training (interspersing various
activities with rest periods) a week is the equivalent of doing ve hours of cardio at the same speed and time (static cardio). Therefore, you should try doing 20-25 minutes of interval training four days out of the week. Whats even better is that almost all cardio machines come with the interval training option built in. All you have to do is nd the option on the machine, set it and go. Use your body weight. Who says you need a cardio machine to have a great cardio workout? Using your own body weight is one of the best, if not the best P090102 04/09 State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, State Farm Indemnity Company, Bloomington, IL tool you have in the toolbox for losing weight. Why? When you do exercises that involve your body weight, you and end up engaging a variety of different muscle groups and planes of movement, which in turn makes your body have to think more and burn more calories at the same time. I love a body weight workout I created called the J workout. It includes exercises with word jump in. I do four sets of each of the following exercises at one minute per exercise with no breaks in between jumping jacks, jump rope, split jumps and box jumps. Change your cardio machine. One of the worse patterns that I see people fall into at the gym is doing the same cardio machine for the same amount of time at the same speed every day. After about three or four weeks, your bodys muscle memory pattern adapts to what you are doing and in turn, you burn less ADVERTISING calories and fat. Nelson Mandela was a hero, but, more than that, a wonderful human being. He is the father of present day South Africa and an inspiration to all those around the world who continue to ght for civil and human rights. He walked out of prison after 27 years to become president of South Africa and ended apartheid without a civil war. He was a ghter, a politician and a pragmatist. He understood achieving success meant not seeking revenge but rather reconciliation. He learned non-violent resistance from Gandhi and used it as a tactic. We are so close to success in passing the bill that I suspect the only thing we lack is unied focus on the legislation instead of on competition among advocacy groups.
little hope for fairness, they are escaping through death. One need not be a transgender person to be alarmed. Each year, transgender people and their allies advocate for Marylands legislature to pass a statewide ban on gender identity discrimination in Maryland. The statistics above, and peoples individual stories, show that these protections are desperately needed. Each year, this newspaper covers the campaign to ban gender identity discrimination and the obstacles that stand in the way. But for all that has been written on this topic, one thing has been missed: the need for greater unity and cooperation among all who care about transgender people in Maryland and support legal protections against gender identity discrimination. Last year, I served on the steering committee of the Maryland Coalition for Trans Equality, which counts among its members virtually all of Marylands transgender-focused advocacy organizations except for one. My position made me a rst-hand witness to the conict among activist groups seeking passage of last years gender identity bill, the Fairness For All Marylanders Act. Last years conicts, as with years past, extended far beyond mere disagreement. They included advocacy organizations actively opposing one anothers efforts to pass the bill. For example, I witnessed one organization holding a lobby day event and rally to gather support for the bill. I saw a rival organization actively work to suppress participation. I saw one organization try to tear down its rival by persuading its membership to resign from it. If we support gender identity legislation, then this is the type of dissension we cannot afford. Efforts need to be directed toward passing gender identity protections rather than tearing one another down. Disagreements are normal, and even a necessary part of making progress. But
active attempts by gender identity advocates to suppress efforts at passing gender identity legislation are neither normal nor productive. The Fairness for All Marylanders Act failed by a single vote. You have to wonder if its fate might have been different had advocates set aside their differences and worked together to focus their efforts on passing a bill that the entire transgender community and all of its allies could stand behind. Indeed, we are so close to success in passing the bill that I suspect the only thing we lack is unied focus on the legislation instead of on competition among advocacy groups. Marriage equality came to Maryland once its advocates unied and formed a coalition to work together on achieving it. Passing gender identity legislation requires its supporters to do the same. The transgender community needs advocates who will focus their energy on ghting for it instead of ghting among themselves. All of us who care for transgender people hope that the lessons of last year, and of years past, have been learned and that this year will be different. We all want the advocates to set aside their differences, pull together and get this done. Lets stand together and make this the year we all succeed.

happened, thats the cold, hard truth. I saw a girl. I didnt know her name, her age or her story, but I felt something when I looked in her eyes; a feeling I get only when I swear I know a stranger on the street from a past life. She was beautiful, but not the mainstream all-American girl type, in a unique way that made me want to get to know her. This was amazing, but also nerve-wracking as hell. I knew I was attracted to both boys and girls, but I never pursued any girls, because of the fear of being judged. As I was standing around pondering my next step, a girl came up to Angie and me. I didnt recognize her, but she began to speak to us. She asked if we were a couple. We replied with a quick no and explained that we just match our outts purely for the fun of it. Then she left, retreating back to her group of friends. Thats when I noticed that she was talking to the girl. My knees buckled, my palms got sweaty, and my breath quickened. The girl who spoke to us returned, and she asked us about our sexual orientation. Angie said she was straight, and I said I was open to both boys and girls (I didnt feel quite right saying I was bisexual before I had even been with a girl). The girl was thrilled
and pulled my hand, and I took Angies. We were brought over to her group of friends. Miriam. That was her name. The girl. We were introduced and we began to talk. I was still nervous, but she was so cool. In the short amount of time that we got to talk, I learned a lot about her, and we had a lot in common. I felt my stomach turn and my heart beat rapidly with excitement. I really liked this girl. We exchanged numbers and I texted her once later that summer, but nothing ever happened. I let her go. I owed Miriam a lot; she helped me truly discover who I am. I am bisexual. I felt for her the same way I felt for boys or other girls, with one exception: I wanted to get to know her more. But I let her go. I still have her contact in my phone, and Im tempted to call or text, but I dont, because I think she no longer remembers me, but that doesnt stop me from remembering her.

Recently, I, a mild-mannered, queer, legally blind, writer morphed into a ticked-off diva. I was invited to an event held at the Library of Congress on Dec. 3. Because my visions impaired, I asked LOCs Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) coordinator Eric Eldritch to have someone escort me from the Librarys entrance to the gathering. Eldritch said LOC would accommodate my request if it could, but that the Library might not be able to assist me. I didnt have a problem with this. Heres what angered me: If LOC couldnt accommodate me, Eldritch said, I could get to the event by following his directions. Just go toward the elevators in

Phones and laptops are so 2012. This year ushered in a new era for tech and theres no doubt that wearables are making the technophiles salivate. If you want to put that special geek on your list ahead of the curve for 2014, its time to leave your device comfort zone. But with such vast differences between options, which wearable is right for you?
The Sony SmartWatch is the best value. Like most watches on this list, the wrist device uses Bluetooth to pair with the phone in your pocket (and other accessories, like Bluetooth headsets) to allow you to control basic phone operations such as check notications, read Twitter updates, compose text messages and even take calls without taking your phone out of your pocket. The downside of the Sony: its little more than a remote control for your Android smartphone. You can operate your phones music player or quickly reply to text messages, but if you want to take that call, you need to take your phone out of your pocket or have an earpiece in. Still, it has a vibrant color screen and looks classy.

sweating, all the time, he said, Oh the hell women go through. But I think the movie shows him for what he really was a much shyer, nicer person. That was a character he played and once we established that character, and turned him around and shocked people more by having him play a housewife, a loving mother, then he got good reviews. And I think it was frustrating to him. I was always happy when he had success away from me because I knew that was very frustrating for him because til the day he died they brought up about the eating shit thing. I could never live up to it and he could never live it down. Its true, and so I understand the dilemma he was in. Its not easy to get parts when youre a 300-pound man no matter what you want to play but he did pretty well with it, and its just a shame because I think that Married With Children thing would have been a hit. BLADE: Whats the strangest question youve ever had during the Q&A session in your show? WATERS: Just recently a woman said, Have you ever eaten pussy and I said, Once, really a long time ago. And another question at a nightclub in New York, a straight guy in the audience and he was straight, I think, said, You know Ive never kissed a guy, can I make out with you? I said, Sure come up, and he was really cute and we did, the audience went crazy, his girlfriend applauded. But then I hate to say this but then an old leather queen said, Can I? and I said, No, the kissing booth is shut. But that was a new one for me but mostly no, I think most of the time the questions are pretty good. The only bad ones are when they just want to talk about themselves. BLADE: Youve said how hard it is to get nancing in recent years. Lots of indie artists and lmmakers are doing these Kickstarter campaigns. Would you ever do one? WATERS: I wouldnt. But you know Jeffrey raised a lot of money for I Am Divine that way. If I was younger and making Female Trouble, youre damn right I would. But I think for me its a little much for me to publicly beg. I own three homes, its not like I dont have a penny. It just doesnt seem to me that Im a lmmaker who is struggling to begin, so I would feel uncomfortable doing it but I totally understand why other people do it and I think its a great idea.
BLADE: Are you still interested in making lms? WATERS: Of course I have a desire to. With Fruitcake, I dont even talk about it anymore because its been like ve years and it didnt happen but I had a really good Hollywood development deal and they liked it and then everything changed. But Ive been lucky, my whole life. Im a writer. I wrote all my movies, I wrote my stage show, Ive written a bunch of books theyre all still in print. Even Shock Value, which came out in 1980. Luckily I have several careers and theyre equally important to me. I dont ever think one is better. I never say, Oh Im really a lmmaker but I also write books, I dont think that. I would make another movie in a minute, yeah. But what am I going to do next? Probably write another book. My new book comes out next June. My last one was a bestseller. Ive had good luck with that. BLADE: Whats the book in June? WATERS: Car Sick. I hitchhiked across America. It comes out June 3. I just saw the cover this week, it looks great. BLADE: Has it typically taken any special negotiating to get stars who were well known before your lms to be in them? People like the Kathleen Turners or the Johnny Depps? WATERS: Well if they hesitated, it was maybe with their agent before they met with me. The fact that they had meetings with me, it usually meant they were interested in doing it. I tried to bring up anything they were uptight about in the script, the very rst thing. I think they think the critics even if they hate the movie, it will give them some street cred by not taking themselves so seriously and playing with their image which most of them all do. And if its a bomb, I get blamed, they dont. I think it hasnt been that hard. Ive tried to get meetings with Meryl Streep and its never happened but Ive met her at a party and she was real sweet. I dont think shes knocking down my door to work with me. But Ive had really good luck. The stars that I like are the ones that generally have a sense of humor about themselves theyve had some success for awhile. The worse ones are generally people that got a huge amount of success in their rst project

BLADE: Tell us about the I Am Divine documentary. I know you participated. Do you feel Divine is nally getting her due with this? WATERS: I think Divine always got a certain amount of great acclaim. I think Divine changed drag queens. Theres no such thing almost anymore as a normal drag queen. Theyre all kind of hip, theyre all kind of edgy, so I think Divine was appreciated. But I think what this movie did and Im just a talking head in it but I encouraged Jeffrey (Schwarz) and gave him contacts I had and told everybody to do the lm was really show what Divine was like in real life. People thought he walked around like the Divine character every day, which he never did and he was not a transvestite, he didnt want to be a woman. He was an actor. He certainly was gay, he was a drag queen but he hated wearing it it was hot, he was fat, he was
If science discovered a way to change sexual orientation, what would you do? The world is only as interesting as the people living in it. I denitely wouldnt want to live in a less diverse world, so I would encourage everyone to embrace what makes them unique, and to share that with those around them. What do you believe in beyond the physical world? I believe were all connected on some level. Every action, whether positive or negative, has consequences, so its important that we think about how our actions might affect someone else. Whats your advice for LGBT movement leaders? I think its important to highlight the unique accomplishments and social contributions of LGBT people. Its also vital that members of the LGBT community live lives that exemplify the values we wish to see in the world. What would you walk across hot coals for? Really good sushi. I was only recently turned on to sushi and now I cant get enough of it. What LGBT stereotype annoys you most? When straight friends think that their gay friends should date, just because theyre gay. Oh youre gay? I have a gay friend, Ill have to set you up! Whats your favorite LGBT movie? To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar. My grandmother let me watch it on Pay-per-View when my parents werent home. I dont think she cared for it, but I thought it was great. It still makes me laugh and the ending gets me every time. Whats the most overrated social custom? Asking How are you? We say it out of ritual, just to be polite, but we rarely stop to listen to the answer. What trophy or prize do you most covet? The TED Prize (Technology, Entertainment, Design). Its a grant awarded to an extraordinary thinker to help them inspire others to change the world. It would be an incredible opportunity to leave a lasting mark on the world. What do you wish youd known at 18? I know its a cheesy clich, but I wish I had truly understood that tting in is really about being comfortable in your own skin. Why Washington? If youve never gone to the National Mall for the Fourth of July, do it. Every summer, relaxing between the Capitol Building and the Washington Monument with thousands of other Washingtonians to enjoy the reworks, Im reminded how awesome this city is.
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO joeyd@washblade.com Doug Yocum loves choral singing so much, hes in several local groups. He sings in the National Cathedral choir, another group called District 8 and a Spanish group called Coral Cantigas. His group Chantry, which specializes in Baroque and Renaissance early music, has two concerts this weekend. Though he loves singing different types of music with the various choirs, he says the balance of parts in early music makes singing with Chantry especially enjoyable. It really provides an opportunity to interact with the other singers, he says. Youre not just up there watching a conductor wave his hands. We do have a conductor, but theres something about the way we sing thats really special. You can truly interact with each other and the music is really a dialogue. Chantry has two concerts in the region this weekend. Tonight (Friday), its members will be St. Bernadettes (70 University Blvd. East in Silver Spring) at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 8, the group will perform at St. Mary Mother of God (72 Fifth St., N.W.) in Chinatown. The group will perform Spain in the Sistine at Christmas a Mass by Cristobal de Morales. Tickets are $35 and $15 for students under 24. Visit chantrydc.com for details. Yocum has been in the group for about a year. The 27-year-old Philadelphia native came to D.C. to go to school at the University of Maryland. By day, he works as a sales and supply support specialist for IKEA at its College Park, Md., location. Yocum is single and lives in Columbia Heights. He enjoys music, kickball and exploring new bars and restaurants in his free time.
Whats Washingtons best nightspot, past or present? MOVA. The bar is beautiful and the bartenders are friendly. The location is also convenient, and the rooftop is amazing in the summer. Describe your dream wedding. Ive always dreamed of a big, traditional wedding mixed with some fun, quirky elements. It will be one of the most important days of my life, so I want to be able to share it with my family and friends. What non-LGBT issue are you most passionate about? Animal rights is an issue close to my heart. We all have a responsibility to advocate for animals. They cant speak for themselves, so when we see injustices against them, its up to us to raise our voices. What historical outcome would you change? The 2000 presidential election. In addition to undermining the electoral system, it put us on a path that turned away from progress and reconciliation. Whats been the most memorable pop culture moment of your lifetime? Probably the Janet Jackson nip slip. I was at a Super Bowl party with my church youth group when it happened, which, of course, resulted in immediate chaos, making it even more laughable for me. Wardrobe malfunction jokes were totally in vogue for months after. On what do you insist? Punctuality. Its such an easy way to show respect to others. What was your last Facebook post or T weet? An Instagram of the National Cathedral in the snow. If your life were a book, what would the title be? Wall Cats, Temper Tantrums and Other Short Stories

The interior of Red Hen, a delightful new restaurant in the bustling Bloomingdale neighborhood.
Perfect pasta
New Bloomingdale spot Red Hen a hit on all accounts
By JONATHAN HOWARD When the weather is gross, theres something comforting about a nice bowl of pasta. It seems to warm your entire body with every bite. So after a snowy afternoon spent Christmas shopping, my husband and I decided to try a restaurant that had been recommended to us on many occasions. Red Hen (1822 1st Street N.W./theredhendc.com) is an Italian/ American restaurant located in the vibrant Bloomingdale neighborhood. With a fantastic wine list as well as creative and delectable modern Italian dishes, this cozy restaurant turned out to be the perfect location to hunker down and spend this stormy evening. Proprietors and longtime friends Michael Friedman, Michael OMalley and Sebastian Zutant joined forces to bring this sophisticated establishment to the city. The rich tones of the rustic wood throughout the space create a warm and comfortable restaurant that does an excellent job complementing the food. Chef Friedman has spent a great deal of time cooking and eating around the world, including in Italy, Greece, Turkey and Northern Africa. He perfected his craft in the kitchen at Proof under the tutelage of Chef Haidar Karoum before opening Red Hen. When we arrived, we were welcomed by a charming hostess who brought us to our table and handed us our menus, and then our waiter Brendan assisted us in selecting the perfect red wine for the night. We agreed upon the Mediterra Poggio Al Tesoro super Tuscan. The wine list at Red Hen is impressive, so we appreciated the assistance. Brendan was a helpful and attentive server the entire evening, without being intrusive. As a starter we selected the smoked ricotta crostini with balsamic brown butter and trufe honey. We loved the crunch of the crostini, the creaminess of the ricotta and the touch of sweetness that the honey gave the entire dish. As we devoured our appetizer, we began thinking about what we were going to have as a main course; there were many dishes that piqued my interest. However, I really was in the mood for pasta, so I selected the Mezza Rigatoni with fennel sausage ragu and pecorino Romano. Greg decided to have the caramelized scallops with soft polenta, Brussels sprouts, bacon and balsamic. The rigatoni in my dish was perfectly al dente and the full-bodied avors of the fennel sausage ragu made it one of the best pasta dishes I have had all year. Its amazing what a simple dish that is so elegantly prepared can achieve. The caramelized scallop dish was equally impressive. The scallops were beautifully cooked and had a velvety smooth texture that slowly melted away and enveloped your taste buds with their fresh avor. The creamy richness of the polenta was an excellent counter to the lightness of the scallops. We sat back to briey stretch our stomachs when Brendan reappeared and asked us if we would like to see the dessert menu. After experiencing what the kitchen could create for the savory side of the menu, there was no way that I was going to miss the opportunity to try the sweet creations. Upon seeing the menu we knew that the proper dessert choice was the chocolate cake with fudge sauce and a white chocolate and peppermint gelato. This dessert was every bit as amazing as we anticipated and it was great way to end our culinary adventure for the evening. Usually when I want beautifully prepared Italian cuisine served up by a knowledgeable wait staff that is always smiling, I go to Ristorante Posto, but the Red Hen may steal me away from my regular stomping grounds at times due to the impeccable dishes and friendly service I experienced. I would never abandon you Posto, you may just see a tiny bit less of me.

and are young. Theyre the ones that need that school that Motown used to have where they teach you how to do interviews and be gracious about success. Johnny Depp was wonderful. He was at the height of his career but he was giving trouble to everybody but me. He had a TV show at the time and I think thats why he came along with us he didnt want to be a teen idol. BLADE: So did you ask Chris Isaak if he was going to be comfortable masturbating on the toilet for you? WATERS: You know I cant remember. I know that he read the script and it had that in that. Im sure I told him, Were not gonna show your dick. I dont know if I said that, but certainly I got along with Chris. Hes pretty much a wild man, he might have shown it. No, Im just kidding. BLADE: Youve spoken before about the inuence of Herschell Gordon Lewiss lm Blood Feast. Did you see it when it rst came out in 1963? WATERS: Oh yeah. I still have the vomit bag.
BLADE: I cant imagine how that must have seemed at the time. Were you scared? WATERS: No, we were roaring. We were on our asses laughing. I saw it at the drive in, which were so different then from the way they are now. Now theyre for families but back then, thats where you went to have sex, to get drunk and do drugs. We went every night. In the winter when you had heaters in the cars, and thats when Blood Feast would play in the worst weather, like in January at the drive in and everybody would honk on the horn when they saw gore. Today they honk on the horn when they see tits, then they honked on the horn for gore. I was shocked when I rst went but we were roaring with laugher. The main reasons we all went was because of this vomit bag, which was a brilliant, brilliant marketing gimmick. We were shocked because nobody had ever seen a gore movie, that was the rst one and it wasnt illegal. BLADE: Is camp better when its unintentional? WATERS: Well certainly Showgirls,
no matter what he says today, he did not mean that to be funny. And thats why its so good. He says today its a comedy. Ive always said with Mommie Dearest if two scenes had been taken out she would have won the Oscar. Thats why the Liberace movie was not camp until he talked about cunnilingus and cancer. I think there are some movies to this day, where its hard to tell. I just came back from Liverpool, I did my spoken word show and also had a master movie class on the movie Boom with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. To this day, you dont know if its so bad its good, the tone is so hard to read. Tennessee Williams said it was the best movie ever made of his material. I love that its so confusing. I think Russ Meyer later tried to be campy for the intellectuals and his lms are not nearly as good as when he just made them for real people who were just jerking off looking at big tits. BLADE: Did Robert Maier talk to you about his 2011 book Low Budget Hell: Making Underground Movies with John Waters? WATERS: No, he didnt really.
BLADE: Did you read it? Any thoughts? WATERS: Yeah. Ill just say one thing I thought it was kind of disgruntled. Kind of sour grapes from someone I thought was my friend. BLADE: You tour with another show as well, but it seems the Christmas show has a special place in your heart. Is that fair to say? WATERS: I really do like Christmas, Im not lying, but I also recognize that many people hate it and its a tough, tough time of the year to get through for some. I do like 13 cities and always feel like Johnny Mathis or Brenda Lee doing a Christmas tour. I just love the fact that Im working. Im like a drag queen on Halloween if its Christmas, Im working. BLADE: How much does it change from year to year on average? WATERS: I add new material all the time. If you havent seen it for ve years, there would be lots of new material but even if you just saw it last year, there would still be some new material. I cant tell you the exact amount but its always changing.

REAL ESTATE
Enjoy the holiday season because the hectic spring real estate market is closer than you think.
in real estate this season, but buyers in the market will punish sellers who overplay their hands on pricing and negotiations. Wise purchasers should still be prepared to waive appraisal contingencies, present nancing scenarios where most of the loose ends already are tied up, plunk down substantial earnest money deposits and to settle on the sellers schedule. But the days of free rent-backs for sellers and the Ill do
absolutely nothing on the inspection so dont bother may be out of style. Buyers still will have to move quickly to lock down desirable properties. When homes are priced correctly and presented properly they will swiftly sashay on and off the runway. I expect prices to increase this year, albeit not by the 11 percent year-over-year that we saw from 2012 to 2013. But dont hold out for a deal too long, these low mortgage rates will disappear
when consumer condence increases enough for the Fed to raise rates. That means the house that you had the assets to ll out in size 4 percent may not t as well in size 6. Trends come and go, but a smart investment in Washington real estate is a classic.

ing for a commercial kitchen to expand his chocolate-making and baking business, Cabeca discovered a deli for lease. His preparation of pastries, chocolates, desserts and other food items for catering, special orders and sale to the trade suddenly became a storefront operation. No longer ensconced in a culinary laboratory, he darts from kitchen to cafe, assisting employees. I love watching customers biting into my creations I live for that experience, Cabeca explains. Online and phone orders are delivered within an expansive area. Im here to bake, doing what I love and sharing it with others. Chocolate Crust offers fresh-fromscratch breakfast and lunch items, many including chocolate as an ingredient. Flaky raspberry-and-Nutella chocolate Pop-Tarts, Cocoa French Toast with Chocolate Ginger Orange Bread, and a wide selection of morning-baked pastries, confections and breakfast foods bring Cabeca in to work at 2 a.m. A specialty is his Doissant deepfried layers of pumpkin pastry dough dabbed with crme, and drizzled with chocolate caramel. Producing crunchy croissant akiness in a donut shape, the labor-intensive process spans three days. Chocolate crust pizzas are another specialty, infusing a surprisingly savory taste with dark chocolate, cocoa beans and powder in the dough. A selection of burgers, specialty sandwiches, salads and skillet-crusted Mac-n-Cheese interlaced with dark chocolate and cocoa nibs are highlights. Cabeca anticipates that last weeks Walmart opening a half-block away will have a positive impact, drawing attention to the up-and-coming area north of Petworth. I had no idea initially, the recently dating 49-year-old Cabeca notes, but the area is home to a growing number of gay and lesbian families. Cabeca is currently hunting downtown for a coffee shop spot for his next undertaking, also hoping to expand ofce-catering opportunities. Like his ongoing kitchen experimentation, Cabecas entrepreneurship is a constantly evolving recipe of success.
