The two-dimensional graphic representation of an object formed by the perpendicular intersections of lines drawn from points on the object to a plane of projection.
As you can see the object is always in front of the projection plane onto which it is projected. Putting the object in the third quadrant puts the projection planes between the viewer and the object.

The term "third-angle" is used because, compared to "first-angle projection, the directions of projection are rotated through two right angles about the object. Second-angle and fourth-angle projection also are defined, but do not result in useful images. Third-angle projection is often considered to be more intuitive than first-angle projection. While Third-Angle projections are prevalent in the USA and Canada, First-Angle projection is more popular in Europe and Asia.
