4 Saint Anthony Shrine The Church on Arch Street
Fourth Sunday of Advent A
Reading I: Isaiah 7:10-14
Responsorial Psalm 24:1-2, 3-4, 5-6
Reading II: Romans 1:1-7
Gospel: Matthew 1:18-24
An Inner Assurance
A dream changed Josephs life and ours. A mere
dream, like what you and I have most every night.
Everyone could see that Josephs fianc was in a
family way. USA culture might applaud this fact,
as it does when movie stars have children with
whomever they feel like as often as they feel like it.
But in Biblical culture marriage was a sacred act, a
participation in Gods own fidelity, and it seemed
that, as far as the townspeople could see, Mary had
broken with that fidelity. The Blessed Mother a
public sinner! No wonder Joseph was making
arrangements for a quiet divorce.
How could a plain old dream change this? In
Sundays Gospel, a dreamed-up angel tells Joseph
that Marys pregnancy is from the Holy Spirit of
God. Mary had accepted this fact readily but
without really understanding. Joseph should not
be afraid of the pregnancy, he was told, even
though he had not yet even married this woman!
So why in the world would he reverse himself and
trust a vision from his sleep? Do you trust dreams?
A friend of mine had one about a kangaroo which
was sitting on the roof in a rocking chair smoking
a pipe! Should my friend check the rooftop for
cozy rocking chairs and ash trays, just in case? No
of course not. We take a dream for what it is, a
mechanism of our psyche that somehow processes
our experience but does not give us literal truth.
We do not rely on them for life-changing messages.
Why did Joseph?
I think the answer has to do with something St.
Ignatius of Loyola calls discernment.
In general, discernment is an examination of ones
internal reactions (movements of spirit),
especially in prayer. There are many different
Spirituality of the Readings
movements, of course, but there is one that may
describe Josephs dream. Sometimes, rarely, grace
is so gently strong that the person praying has an
inner assurance that the experience did not come
from imagination at all, but from God. Somehow
this grace turns out to be impossible to doubt.
You and I have to be careful not to get carried away
by such a notion. Probably many of us could
convince ourselves that God or an angel spoke to
us this morning. We need to discern which
experiences are from God and which are not. Are
they quiet? Do they lead toward God or away?
What is the long-term result? A spiritual director
could help us sort through such questions.
That said, I think Josephs dream might have been
a movement of this kind. It containedinstead of
a kangarooa quiet certainty
of the presence of God. No
doubts followed it, though
they would surely have
seemed warranted. Josephs
dream was like the face of
mother to a child. It was like
the voice of a close friend.
Joseph was a good man. He
already had a storehouse of
trust in Gods love. He did
not experience this treasury as
broken into, shattered, or
pulled to pieces by the dream.
Instead the message fit right
into the design of Josephs life
with God. And so he
followed.
What is your own internal
sense of Marys pregnancy? Is
the birth of God an impossible
tale reserved for children? Or
do you find the roots of trust
within yourself as Joseph did?
Decide soon! Christmas is coming.

Giving and Receivingl
Have you ever worried about the gifts you give for
Christmas? Well, not the gifts themselves but
whether they will please the ones who receive
them?
For instance, what if the giftee forces a courtesy
smile and says, Oh it is just what I wanted, or
something similar? What if,
later in the year, by accident,
waiting for the person to
answer their door which you
have just knocked on, you
glimpse the family rushing to
bring your last years gift up
from the basement and hang it
up in the living room?
So I used to keep second-
guessing myself on every gift
I shopped for. Look there, I
would say, that is the perfect
gift for this person, just right!
But wait a minute, they dont
have a fireplace mantle to sit it
on. Or, will it go with their
dcor? Or does he or she even
like that kind of thing. Maybe
I will look like a fool. Or, or,
or, or.
Or.
Thats normal, isnt it?
Normal agonizing.
A great friend of mine from South Africa helped
me out with this dilemma. Kolile was his name
(Ko-le-leh, but pronounced with a click instead of
the K*) and he told me, You are trying to do
someone elses job. Do your own. Your task is to
give the gift. Let them take care of receiving it.
Spirituality of the Readings
He gave two examples. In Africa the women at the
parish work for many days preparing a feast. All
the food is beautiful, tasty, and set out perfectly.
At last the day arrives, the doors open, and
minutes later the whole presentation looks like
plowed earththe food picked over, the people
happy but oblivious. This does not bother the
women, he said. It is up to the people to receive it
in whatever way seems right. The womens part of
the exchange is to make the gift ready, and they
love doing it.
Then he said, in his gruff but gracious way, that in
his part of Africa it is the custom to bring a present
to the person you are visiting. He and others
walked the long journey to visit his father, who
happened to love roast beef. Kolile brought along
a big chunk of roast and put it on the table when
they got there. His father said, no, thank you, I do
not like that any more.
Kolile was not bothered. I did my part, he said,
and my father did his. All was well.
So I began to choose gifts that just felt right for each
person on my Christmas list. I did not worry and
worry whether it would please them, I let the
person fill my mind and when I saw something
that matched my sense of them, I bought it.
Without worry. Every gift did actually delight the
one who received it, but that isnt the point. My job
was to open my heart and give. I let them take care
of receiving it.
Maybe this is what God does at Christmas. So
many people do say No thanks to the Christ
child. But the Christmas babe is not born in order
to get accepted. He is the spilling over of Gods
immense love for us. When God lets each of us
into his mind, he senses that the baby Jesus is the
perfect gift.
Merry Christmas!
________
* Kolile kept making me pronounce his name correctly. I
asked, why do I have to insert the click on the first syllable
when everybody else just says 'ko'? Because you can, he
said. God rest his soul.
