Mission Statement
Our mission at the Julia Landon College Preparatory and Leadership Development
School is to create college bound students with a deep commitment to public service
and a true understanding of their leadership skills within the global community.
Course Overview
Advanced Comprehensive Science 1is inquiry based and consists of six units and a
formal science project.. An experiment based science project is required for students
in all advanced science courses.
CourseOutline
The course outline may be adjusted due to scheduling needs. Updates will be posted
on the blog. This is the anticipated schedule.

are either on A day or B day through Team Time/Research

Thinking Like A 1-2 Identify a topic.
Begin background reading.
Scientist
Energy In The 3-9 Continue background reading/taking notes. Develop
a complete research plan. Submit for SAFETY
Atmosphere review.
Earth’s Changing 10 - 12 Upon approval from Safety committee you will
begin experimentation.
Surface
Cells 13 - 18 Finish data collection and analysis.
Research Paper due and Presentation of project in
class.
The Human 19 - 24 School and Regional Science Fairs (if selected)
Body/Classification
Forces, Motion , 25 - 36 Review for End of Course Exam
and Energy
Student Evaluation
Advanced Comprehensive Science 1 is based on the new Florida Standards
(NGSSS adopted 2008) Grades will be based on the following.
 Assessments which include tests, quizzes, projects and performance tasks.
This will be 60% of the grade.
 Activities which include Labs, Lab Reports, learning practices, and
preparation for assessments. This will be 20% of the grade.
 Technology which includes GIZMOS, Odyssey, or other appropriate
programs. This will be 20% of the grade.
Educational Materials
Holt Science and Technology (GREEN) is the district adopted text. Other materials
including on-line sources and videos will be utilized to help make this class a rich
experience for each student.

Homework Policy:
Homework allows students to prepare for the next lesson, to make progress on the science
project, or to review a previous lesson. Homework is a time to practice skills, review
concepts, or prepare for assessments. Homework will be reviewed, but not graded.
Activities That Are Not Completed During Class
An activity that was assigned in class and is not completed should be finished at home.
This is not homework and will be graded.
Late Work Policy
Class Activities and Projects are expected to be completed and submitted on time.
Work that is not submitted on time may be penalized.
Make-up Work Policy
It is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to talk to the teacher about work missed.
For each day absent, an equal number of days is allowed to complete make-up
assignments. In case of illness lasting three or more days, assignments may be
requested through the Guidance Office at 346-5650 ext.114. Please allow 24-hours for work
to be compiled. Check the class blog before calling for assignments as information may
already be posted.
Grade Recovery Policy
Students will be offered grade recovery as outlined in the
Duval County Pupil Progression Plan found on the Duval County Public Schools web page
(www.duvalschools.org).
Parent/Teacher Conferences
All Parent/Teacher conferences are to be scheduled through the Guidance Office.
Tutoring Schedule
Tutoring will be offered on Tuesdays. Tutoring will end at 2:55 pm and
students must be picked up at that time. Any student who will be attending tutoring must
bring a note from a parent giving permission to stay after school.
Grading Scale
Students will be evaluated in accordance with the standard Duval County Public Schools
’ grading scale. Rubrics will be used for grading projects and performance tasks. These will
be published both in class and on-line. There will be no extra credit work available, but
appropriate bonus opportunities will be available for all students at least once each grading
period.
Progress Reports
In addition to report cards issued at the end of each quarter, students
will receive progress reports. Please check the Julia Landon calendar that is posted on-line.
Lab Safety Contract
A signed lab safety contract must be on-file BEFORE a student may fully participate in lab
activities. Any violations of the safety contract may result in a loss of lab privileges Labs
missed due to misbehavior or unsafe behavior may not be made up unless the parent
attends the next tutoring session to supervise the student’s safety.
Other Information
Students and parents are encouraged to access information about the class activities and
schedules by accessing the teacher’s page through the school’s web site. The student
agenda is an excellent way to keep our home-school-home communication link strong.
Students will use the agenda daily for recording assignments. It is also a good place for
parents to write a quick note to the teacher or for the teacher to write a quick note to the
parents. Please check the agenda frequently. Information can also be found on the class
blog.
