Part - A
1. (a). Define Control system. Compare Open loop and closed loop control systems with
one example each. (8 marks)
(b). Obtain differential equations describing the mechanical system shown in figure, and
draw the electric network using force-voltage analogy.

2. (a) Define transfer function. Obtain the closed loop transfer function of a system whose
block diagram is given in figure below using the block diagram reduction technique.

(b) The signal flow graph shown in figure below refers to an electric circuit diagram. Find
the ratio C(s)/R(s) by using Mason’s gain formula. (08 marks)
3. (a).Derive the transient response of the second order under damped system when it is
subjected to unit step input. (10 marks)
(b).A unity feedback system is characterized by open-loop transfer function
G(s)=k/s(s+10). Find the value of K so that the system will have a damping ratio of 0.5.
For this value of K, determine the settling time, peak over shoot for unit step input.

4. (a) For the unity feedback system, G(s) = K (S+4)(S+20)/ S (S+100)(S+500). Apply the
R-H criterion to determine the stability of the closed-loop system as function of K.
Determine the value of K for which the system has sustained oscillations. Determine the
frequency of oscillations.
(b). Determine the ranges of K such that the characteristic equation

6. (a) State and explain Nyquist stability criterion. (08 marks)
(b) Sketch the Nyquist plot of unity feed back control system having the open loop
transfer function G(s)= 5/ s(1-s) determine the stability of the system using
Nyquist stability criterion. (12 marks)

7. The open loop transfer function of a unity feed back control system is given by
G(s) = K/ s(1+0.001s)(1+0.25s)(1+0.1s).Using Bode plot, determine the value of K so

1. a) Distinguish between open loop and closed loop control system. give two examples for

3. a) The open loop transfer function of a unity feed back control system is given by
G(s)= K/ s(sT+1)
i) By what factor the amplifier gain should be multiplied so that damping ratio
is increased from 0.2to 0.8
ii) By what factor the time constant T should be multiplied so that the damping
ratio is reduced from 0.6 to 0.3 (06 marks)

b) Consider unity feed back control system whose open loop transfer function is
given by G(s)= (0.4s+1)/s(s+0.6) obtain the response to step input. Calculate rise
time, max over shoot, peak time and settling time for the same input (08 marks)
(c)Derive an expression for generalized error coefficients. (06 marks)

4. (a) Explain absolute and relative stability of the system. (04 marks)
