THE STORY BEHIND HARK! THE HERALD ANGELS SING

Hark! the Herald Angels Sing is one of the more than 6,500 hymns from the pen of Charles Wesley. It was probably written a year after he accepted Christ as Saviour in 1738. The text first appeared in Hymns and Sacred Poems (1739). The first stanza began with the words, Hark, how all the welkin rings, Glory to the King of Kings! Welkin is an older and less used word than means heavens, or sky. The text was altered to its present form in George Whitefields Collection of 1753. Like so many of Wesleys hymns, this text is really a condensed course in Biblical doctrine in poetic form. Following the re-telling of the angelic visit to the shepherds in the initial stanza, the succeeding verses teach spiritual truths like the virgin birth, Christs deity, the new birth, and a concern for consecrated living. Wesleys hymns were composed in order that people would sing their way, not only into the experience, but also into knowledge of Him. The Mendelssohn tune was contributed by master composer, Felix Mendelssohn. The Mendelssohn tune was adapted from his Festgesang, Opus 68, composed in 1840. Mendelssohn wrote it to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the invention of printing. The setting of this music to Hark! the Herald Angels Sing was applied by William H. Cummings, and first published in 1857.

The process of selecting deacons by the church membership will begin on Sunday, January 5. Each member will be asked to write down the names of as many men they would like to see serve as deacons on the provided form. Members should place the completed form in the offering plate. These men will then begin the process to see if they are willing to serve, and if they are Biblically qualified to serve. These men will then be placed on the election ballot. Our membership will be seeking to elect 3 deacons to serve the needs of our church family. Sunday PM, January 5, 2014

In January 2014, Pastor Fisher will be enlisting recruits for a Basic Doctrines training course. BUILDING PROJECT NEED

After a recent inspection of our roof, it was apparent that the churchs roof needed work. There are some areas of our roof that need immediate attention. Our church will need approximately $22,000 to reroof the church (not the new addition). Funds have already been received in the amount of $10,000 for this project. We need to raise the remaining $12,000 by the end of December. You can designate your financial gift on our giving envelopes by using the BUILDING FUND box.
