1. Air (assumed incompressible) flows across the rotor shown in Figure 1. The magnitude of absolute velocity increases from 15 m/s to 25 m/s. Measurements indicate that the absolute velocity at the inlet is in the direction shown. Determine the direction of the absolute velocity at the outlet if the fluid puts no torque on the rotor. Is the rotation CW or CCW? It this device a pump or a turbine? Justify.

2. A centrifugal radial water pump has the dimensions shown in Figure 2. The volume rate of flow is 7.08 10-3 m3/s, and the absolute in inlet let velocity is directed radially outward. The angular velocity of the impeller is 960 rpm. The exit velocity as seen from a coordinate system attached to the impeller can be assumed to be tangent to the vane at its trailing edge. Calculate the power required red to drive the pump.

3. Suppose the pump of Figure 3 is situated between two large water tanks with their free surfaces open to the atmosphere. Explain qualitatively what would happen to the pump performance curve if the free surface of the outlet tank were raised in elevation, all else being equal. Repeat for the system curve. What wou would happen to the operating point? Would the volume flow rate at the operating point decrease, increase, o or r remain the same? Indicate the change on a qualitative plot of H versus Q, and discuss. (Hint: use the energy equation between the free surface of the tank upstream of the pump and the free surface of the tank downstream of the pump)

Figure 3 4. A centrifugal pump having a 15 cm diameter impeller and th the e characteristics shown in Figure Fig 4 is to be used to pump gasoline through 1200 m of commercial steel 8 cm diameter pipe. The pipe connects two reservoirs having open surfaces at the same elevation. D Determine etermine the flowrate. Do you think this pump is a good choice? Explain. Given gasoline = 4.6 x 10-7 m2/s and commercial steel = 0.045 mm.

5. A water pump is used to pump water at velocity 0.596 m/s from one large reservoir to another large reservoir that is at higher elevation. The free surfaces of both reservoirs are exposed to atmospheric pressure as sketched in Figure 5. The dimensions and minor loss coefficients are provided in the figure. The pumps performance is approximated by the expression Havailable = H0 aQ2, where shutoff head H0 = 24.4 m of water column, coefficient a = 0.0678 m/Lpm2, available pump head, Havailable is in units of meters of water column, and capacity Q is in units of liters per minute (Lpm). Estimate the capacity delivered by the pump. The density and viscosity of water at 20C are 998.0 kg/m3 and 1.002 10-3 kg/m.s respectively.
