The court decided that blacks had no right to sue and that going into free territory didnt make slaves automatically free attempt to admit Kansas to the Union as a slave state went against Douglas idea of popular sovereignty, so Douglas teamed up with the Republicans and stopped it > shattered Democratic Party unity
