Meera- The exam is drawing near. Im not well prepared for it. So Ive to study hard now. How have you prepared yourself? Minati Yes, fairly well. Meera- You are a bright student. So you dont find any obscurity. You know that the chapters in mathematics are so vast. I have not been able to go through the whole chapters even once. Besides this my mother was ill and I had to nurse her. Minati- I am so sorry. Is she quite well now? Meera- Yes, she is. Minati- If you wish you may come to my house every day. We will discuss the subjects. That will help you much. Ill try to clarify away your problems. Meera- Thats very kind of you. Ill certainly go to yours. Mother will be very glad to hear of your proposal. Minati- Then comes from to-morrow. Its getting dark. Let us now go home. Meera-Thank you, Minati, for your kind offer.a Minati- No need of thanks. Ill glad to help a friend if I can. 2) Dialogue between two students who have just come out of examination hall Palash: How have you done in todays paper, Litton? Litton: Not so well. What about you?

Palash: I have not done well. I could not prepare well due to my illness. Litton: The questions number 2 and 4 were not common to me. It seemed very hard. Palash: I do not think so. All the questions were very easy. Litton: You are a bright student and so your case is different. Palash: Still the paper as a whole is not so hard to carry 50% marks. Litton: I am speaking of the average students. Palash: I did not see any student depressed. Litton: You are very optimistic. Palash: Lets hope for the best. 3) Dialogue between two friends discussing on influence of cinema Leela- Hello, Maya, where had you been last evening? You had been absent from home when I went to see you. Maya- Well, I had been to the cinema and had a grand time. I saw a very nice film of Dickenss A Tale of Two Cities. Ive read the book. The facts are well known. The incidents of the story were very impressive when they were thrown on the screen. We get a vivid picture of the French revolution and its causes. Leela-I too saw the film last week and it was very impressive. I cant forget the glorious sacrifice of Sydney cartoon. I like such picture very much. Maya- One thing struck me most. Such films are suitable both for the young and the old. Leela- I quite agree. Last year I went to see a film with my mother. Certain scenes showed the low taste producer. I felt ashamed that I was with mother to see such a bad film. Maya- Another thing proves interesting to me- the documentary films. They give us a lot of useful information. Leela-Yes, yes. Our Government informs us what it was done and is doing for the uplift of the country. Besides, we see the picture of certain current event of which we read in the newspaper. Maya- thus we see the cinema is not only a source of amusement but also a good medium of spreading education. Leela- It is quite true. But such good films are very rare. Common people like sensation films and producer also cater to their taste to earn a lot of money.

Maya- Thats very bad. Such films should be banned. 4) Dialogue between two students discussing about pollution Maya: Isnt it very alarming that the water of our canals, rivers and tanks is getting polluted day by day? Amir: Yes. This polluted water causes much harm to us.

Maya: But man is mainly responsible for water pollution. They pollute water by throwing waste into it. Amir: Farmers use chemical fertilizer and insectides in their fields. Rain and floods wash away some of the chemicals. They get mixed with the water of canals. Ponds and rivers and pollute water. Maya: Mills and factories also pollute water by the waste materials.

Amir: Water pollution can be prevented in many ways. But the main way is to make the people aware of the importance of pure water. Maya: Amir: Thank you for this important discussion. Youre most welcome. Bye

5) Dialogue between two friends discussing the merits and demerits of mobile phones Shathi: Hello, Farzana. How are you? Farzana: Im fine and what about you? Shathi: Im fine too. It is long time since I met you last. Farzana: But we have kept constant contact over mobile phone. Shathi: Yes this mobile phone has become a very important factor in our life. We cannot do without it for a single day Farzana: Right. It has reduced uncertainly doubt, anxious waiting and painful suspense. In fact, it has made our life easy and comfortable. And it has made our global communication dynamic and faster. Shathi: But it has some disadvantages too. It causes brain tumor, genetic damage and many other incurable diseases.

Farzana: Yes during conversation, the blood brain barrier may get damaged, the blood pressure may get high and the red blood cells may get affected.It is also hazardous for the children and pregnant women. Shahthi: The criminals are also carrying out their operations with the help of it. Besides, it causes a lot of harm to the teenagers. They can easily contact with their so called lovers in season and out of season. Farzana: All these are very true. Though we are getting immense benefits from it, we should use it with care and caution to avoid its demerits. 6) Dialogue between two friends discussing their holiday plans Suresh- Well, Biren, the semester holidays are drawing near. Whats your plan? Biren- Father says, well spend the holidays in Manipur. Mother is not keeping good health. Sea air sea-bathing may do a lot of improvement in her health. Have you ever been to Manipur? Suresh- No. Biren- You havent? Then you should go. I had been there twice before. The greatest charm of Manipur is sea. Im pretty sure youll like it much. Suresh- But my aunt has written to me to visit Banaras.Banaras also is place worth seeing. Biren- But you cant enjoy the sea view there. Its splendid. Please come with us.Seabath is most exhilarating. Besides we shall visit the temples at Konarak and Bhubaneswar, also the ancient relics of Udaygiri and Khandagiri at Bhubaneswar. I shall have a jolly time of you be with me. Write to your aunt that youll go to her place during the xmas holidas. Thats the best time to visit Banaras. Isnt it? Suresh- Thats true. But I dont know whether father will permit me to go with you. Biren- I shall persuade him and Im sure hell not object. Suresh- Then will you please come to our house in the evening? Biren- Oh! Yes, I will. Now good-bye! Suresh- Good-bye! 7) Dialogue between two friends discussing corruption in India MOHAN: Do you think we can remove corruption from our country?

RUPALI: Definitely. Who can forget the support Anna Hazare got recently. Even I was surprised. People need an honest fighter against corruption. MOHAN: But the wicked politicians play their dirty games to fail any movement. Honest groups cannot fight them for long. They have to waste a lot of energy in fighting false accusations and legal cases. RUPALI: Do you say the present movement of great Anna Hazare will also fail? MOHAN: Yes. Every anti-corruption movement in the history has failed. Wings of corruption are even bigger now. RUPALI: But if we fight with unity we can kill the demon of corruption. Our MOHAN: I dont say we should not fight. Tough fight will be able to control corruption to some extent but you cannot end it. As most of politicians are corrupt they will not let the bill get passed in parliament in its original form. They will try to keep loopholes so that it is not easy to punish any politician or powerful bureaucrat. RUPALI: I think you are right. But the ways must be found to make strict laws so that nobody dares to indulge in corruption. MOHAN: There is only one hope. If more good people enter politics with a determination and work in cooperation only then we can weaken the demon of corruption. RUPALI: It may happen in near future because most people want honest administration in this country. MOHAN: At least we should not lose hope. Hope keeps the frustration away.

8) Dialogue between two friends on pros and cons of lotteries Tom: How are you Jack? Jack: I am in the pink of my health. What about you? Tom: Well. Just my luck! I have bought as many as 50 lottery tickets, but havent got a single prize. Jack: How unwise of you to buy so many lottery tickets! Why do you waste your money on lotteries? Tom: I dont think I am wasting my money. If I get a prize, I shall become rich. If I dont, I console myself with the thought that my money is going to be used for the welfare of the destitute. Jack: Your case is different; you have decent income. What about those who are tempted to buy raffle tickets in spite of their very meager income-for example, servants, scavengers, rickshaw-pullers? Do you imagine how many poor men starve to enable themselves to buy raffle tickets? Tom: As a matter of fact, I also feel the pinch of it, in spite of my decent income. I have been spending about sixty rupees on the average every month on lotteries. I have never won a prize. Jack: Its true the money saved through lotteries used for the welfare of the poor, but lottery is not better than gambling. It can have a demoralizing effect. It gives the impression that one need not work at all to become rich. Tom: So it does. It has never occurred to me that lottery is an evil. 9) Dialogue between two friends discussing merits and demerits of life in great city Abdul: Good morning, Mr.Kareem . Its long time since we last met. When did you arrive? Kareem: Good morning, Mr.Abdul. I only arrived last night. I have come here on business. I hope to return home tomorrow. I hate living in a great city like this. Abdul: Do you? Many people coming from the country enjoy themselves so immensely in the city that they dont feel like getting home again. Kareem: But I find little enjoyment in the smoky air of a city and all its noise and racket. Abdul: Of course, in a city you cannot have the clean air and the quiet of the country, but thats a very small disadvantage compared with the facilities provided by a city. We have in this city

theatre, cinemas, concerts, well-equipped hospitals, palatial buildings and so on. We have here a wide variety of articles to choose from, if we wish to buy anything. Kareem: Thats why people living in a city tend to become extravagant. Those who go in for cheap entertainments can naturally enjoy city life. Abdul: You are not completely right. A city provides not only public entertainments but various things that stimulate your mind- public libraries, museum, zoological gardens, art galleries and so on. City life is a great boon to young boys and girls in particular; they have the benefit of excellent schooling. Besides, the city itself is a school for studying life. In a city anyone comes into contact with men of different types, manners and customs. Kareem: Yes, city life has certain advantages, too. I ought not to be so allergic to it. 10) Dialogue between two friends discussing their hobbies George: How are you, Will? Will: Fine. What about you? George: Well. How do you spend your leisure time? Will: I like something more active. My hobby is collecting ferns and wild flowers. And to get these you have to go long country walks, and explore the woods, and climb the hills. It is quite an adventure when you find a rare plant or fern in some wild place. George: But what do you do with them when you get them? Will: I press them, and then mount them neatly on sheets of paper, and name them. I have got quite a nice collection. George: How do you press them? Will: I lay the fern or plant between sheets of blotting paper, and put them in a press, or under a board with heavy weights. You have to change the blotting-paper every day, and in about a week the plant is dried and pressed, and will last like that for years. George: And what is the good of your hobby? Will: Well, it teaches me a lot of Botany; and takes me into beautiful country; and does me good physically, because it means exercise in the open air.

Nasir : Right you are. In fact, the importance of English cant be described in words. Summon : So, all us must learn English.

Thanks to social networking through internet. Farzana: Right. It has made our life easy and comfortable. And it has made our global communication dynamic and faster. Shathi: It helps us to make friends with people halfway around the world. It helps us to land our dream job. This is almost like food chain! Im just a small spider somewhere in the World Wide Web trying to share my thoughts with millions of other spiders elsewhere in the web.

Farzana: But it has some disadvantages too. Some people take advantage of the anonymity the internet can provide and resort to writing about or uploading unnecessary content. It is a menace for people who are actually interested in sharing knowledge. On a public forum or website avoid making racist, comments, and jokes. Shathi: Moreover you must be very careful about any photos that you upload. I dont think I have to tell you about photo morphing. We should avoid contacting strangers. Farzana: All these are very true. Though we are getting immense benefits from it, we should use it with care and caution to avoid its demerits. 13) Dialogue between two friends discussing merits and demerits of internet Maya: Hello Amir. How are you? Amir: Im fine and what about you? Maya: Im fine too. It is long time since I met you last. Amir: But we have kept constant contact through face book. Maya: Yes! Online social networking has indeed come a long way. Internet has shrunk this world. Thanks to internet! Amir: Right. It can collect and send messages, information, picture, very quickly from one corner of the world to another. Maya: Internet has added speed to globalization and IT sectors. It has brought about new opportunities to Government, business and education. Today much individual use internet for shoppings pay utility bill, credit card bill, E-commerce, online banking. Amir: But it has some disadvantages too. Teenagers some time keep chatting and whiling away their time with friends or even unknown persons, when they are supposed to be at their desk of study. They tend to enjoy pornography and do many immoral and hazardous tasks. Maya: Moreover, terrorists exploit cyber cafe as their means of fulfilling their task, it is called cyber bullying; even some heinous and immoral person belittle to derogate others. Amir: All these are very true. Maya: Amir, Mrs. Harrys talk was very good, isnt it? Amir: Well said Maya. She is articulate and her communication skills are excellent. Maya: Yes, communication skill is the root of all soft skills which is essential for an individual to get into highly technical jobs. Amir: Could you please tell me about soft skills? Maya: Certainly! Some of the crucial soft skills are listening skills, adaptability, teamwork skills, integrity and work ethic, positive demeanor. Amir: Why do these skills is important? Maya: Although one is technically competent, if one cant follow the instructions then one will miss something. Being flexible and having a good attitude while welcoming unexpected at work is a valuable skill. Amir: Yes, I agree. Then what else? Maya: One must conduct oneself with others. One should be able to make good decisions quickly, have a strong ethic. Besides these one should be optimistic. Amir: Thank you so much for sparing your valuable time with me. Man has worked miracles in the field of science and there seems to be nothing that he cannot achieve. In fact, I feel proud be in this era. Tom: But it will save or ruin our civilization? Jerry: It will undeniably save our civilization. Tom: How do you say? Jerry: Rapid development in modern science has conquered many diseases and disorders. Man has conquered nearly everything except death. Communication satellites are placed in orbit above the earth so that they can bounce radio signals from one part of the world to another. Engineers have also developed intelligent robots, which can act as guards, firemen and may travel into space to distant worlds.

Tom: Fine. But these innovations have made people to become lazy which is the main cause of obesity and they suffer from lot of ailments. You know, the highly developed machinery industries pollute the globe causing many environmental problems. Jerry: Yes, I agree. While many people live in horrible conditions and famine, governments spend a lot of money on developing weapon industry. The atom bombs, hydrogen bombs and neutron bombs can destroy the human race. Nuclear power plant leakages endanger future generations. Fear of being killed for no reason lurks in our minds. Tom: The modern technology should either stop or prevent social disproportions. Jerry: Ok. We had a good time. Bye!
