@ne of the first things that attracted me to Neuro0linguistic Programming "NLP$ as language. 3Cve al ays loved language! and as amaIed hen 3 heard about some of the things that you can do ith it. @ne of the things that as mentioned in many of the books 3 read as a po erful set of language patterns called The <eta0model! a set of %uestioning tools modeled by ,ichard 8andler and *ohn Arinder from t o of the therapeutic geniuses of the (0th century! -ritI Perls and Kirginia Satir. 3t as the first creation in the field of NLP! and formed the basis for subse%uent discoveries in the field. The <eta0model orks on the follo ing principleG people donCt e#perience reality directly! but rather through the LmapsC of reality they create in their minds. /hen people have a problem or challenge! it does not typically e#ist Lin realityC 0 it e#ists in their map of reality. 3f you can enrich their map! their e#perience of the orld ill become richer. ;nrich their map enough! and their problems ill be solved! their challenges overcome. The <eta0model is the principle tool for discovering here and ho to enrich a personCs map. 3 as hooked. 3 told myself D7ou have to learn ho to do thisFE So 3 did. 3n the course of my studies! 3 tried lots of approaches! and e#perimented. 3 tried things that orked! and many more that didnCt. This short e0book is a distillation of some of the most po erful approaches 3Cve learned for ensuring that your coaching is effective. +s you read this youMll start to see ays that you can fine0tune and improve our coaching abilities right a ay. ,ead on and 3Mll sho you a ay you can accelerate your learning of these patterns later.

@ne of my favourite NLP %ueries is DNo do you kno 1E /hile 3 love using it for information gathering! 3 as pleasantly surprised back in -ebruary hen someone on our NLP Practitioner training asked me DNo do you kno hen someone youCre orking ith has e#perienced a real change1E @ne of the things that those of you doing coaching or change ork of any sort may already have e#perienced is that clients often ant to please you. Sometimes! this means that they ill consciously report that some sort of internal change has taken place! even hen it hasnCt. 3 got fooled by this a fe times hen 3 first started doing change ork ith people! so over the years 3Cve developed a kind of Lspidey0senseC about hether people have really e#perienced a shift! or hether theyCre &ust trying to please me. /hen the Practitioner asked me DNo do you kno 1E! 3 had to go inside my o n e#perience ? make e#plicit some of the things 3Cm responding to that let me kno a change has taken place. So! some of the things that let me kno that someone 3Cm orking ith has made a change or a shift in a certain area areG Long%term change in circumstances This is the most reliable indicator of change. 3f you help someone to stop smoking! ? a year later they still arenCt smoking! thatCs an e#cellent sign that the change has taken place. 3f theyCre en&oying life as a non0smoker! thatCs even betterF "eality%base# testing 3f you do a phobia cure ith someone ho has a fear of dogs! go find a dogF 3f you think youCve sorted out their fear of heights! find a tall building. 3f they ere scared of talking to people! get them to go out ? speak ith strangers. /henever 3 do change ork ith people! 3 ant to find the most immediate ay to test my ork that 3 can. @ne of the great things about doing this is that if the change has orked! the test creates a strong convincer for the person. 3f it hasnCt orked! then you kno asap that thereCs more to do. (maginary testing Sometimes! it isnCt practical to go out during a session and conduct a test. 3f you do a phobia cure ith someone ho has a fear of flying! you may not ant to ait until they ne#t fly to find out if itCs orked. -ortunately! the nervous system processes a vividly imagined e#perience in a very similar ay to a LrealC e#perience. Aet them to vividly imagine the conte#t here they anted a change "DSee hat youCd see! hear hat youCd hear! ? feel hat youCd feel etc$! ? notice their non0verbal responses "skin colour! breathing rate! e#pression etc$. 3f you already kno ho to use hypnosis! you can intensify the e#perience by leading them into a trance first.
