Swinburne University of Technology Faculty of Engineering & Industrial Sciences HES2146C: Computer Aided Engineering 2010 SPACEGASS ASSIGNMENT

This assignment is due by 10am 28th May 2010. Submissions are to be placed in the mail box of Prof Emad Gad (Level 7of EN Building). Your submission must include printouts from Spacegass where required. A CD containing your all Spacegass files must be submitted with your written report. The file names on the CD are to correspond to the question numbers. Submission of electronic Spacegass files only (without a written report) will not be accepted. This assignment is worth 15% of the total assessment of this subject.

Question 1 (10 Marks) A load is supported by two steel rods as shown in Figure 1. Both rods have the same diameter (16mm). (a) Find the force in each rod using Spacegass. (b) Find the stress in each rod using Spacegass. (Submit a copy of the stress plot from Spacegass showing the stress values). (c) Confirm and show your answers for (a) and (b) using hand calculations. (a+b = 4 marks; c = 6 marks)

Question 2 (20 Marks) For each of the two beams shown in Figures 2a & 2b: (a) find the reactions using Spacegass. (b) find the BMD and SFD using Spacegass (submit copies of the SFD and BMD showing values). (c) confirm and show your answers for (a) and (b) using hand calculations. Assume that the beams are made of 360UB56.7 steel. (a+b = 12 marks; c = 8 marks)

Question 3 (10 Marks) The beam shown in Figure 3 is subject to a number of loads including: (i) downward uniformly distributed dead load (G); (ii) downward concerted live loads (Q); and (iii) upward uniformly distributed wind load (W). The loads could occur simultaneously in accordance with the following load combinations: 1.2G+1.5Q 1.2G+0.4Q+W 0.9G+W (a) Considering the above combinations and using Spacegass determine the maximum (positive and negative) reactions, shear forces and bending moments the beam should be designed for. These maximum values are known as design values. (b) For the load combinations producing the maximum reactions, shear force and bending moments, confirm your Spacegass results using hand calculations. (a = 6 marks; b = 4 marks) G = 0.5kN/m Q = Last digit of your student ID number+1 kN W = 2kN/m Assume that beam is made of 250UB25.7 steel. Q G A 1m Figure 3 Notes: - Provide your maximum design values in a tabulated form. - Provide Spacegass plots of the SFD and BMD for the load combinations giving maximum values. - Provide hand calculations for the load comminations producing maximum design values only. Question 4 (10 Marks) For the frame shown in Figure 4, determine the reactions and draw the bending moment diagram (BMD) and shear force diagram (SFD) for the following load cases using both hand calculations and Spacegass: (a) H = last digit of your ID+10kN & V=0 (b) H= 0 & V = last digit of your ID+50kN (c) H = last digit of your ID+10kN & V = last digit of your ID+50kN Assume that beam is made of 250UB25.7 and the columns are made of 150UB14.

Question 5 (10 Marks) The truss shown in Figure 5 has a typical construction where all the truss connections are pinned connections (i.e., each member is cut to length and members are pinned at each end). The support at A is a pin support and at C is a roller. All truss members are made of 150SHS6 steel. For this configuration and loads shown: (a) Use Spacegass to determine all reactions and member forces in the truss. Include graphical outputs from Spacegass showing the member numbers and member forces. Also include a printout of input data and output results; (b) Use hand calculations to check the reactions and determine the member forces in members DE, BD and BE (include in your answers whether the members are in tension or compression). Spacegass Tips:
Question 1 Stresses can be plotted through View from the top menu and then Static Analysis Results. Extrating graphical outputs from Spacegass To plot diagrams (eg SFD, BMD, etc), go to File from the top menu and then select Copy to Clipboard. From there, you can go to your word document, for example, and then paste. This will paste whatever was shown on the Spacegass screen.
