POSTGRADUATE COURSES: GENERAL INFORMATION

N.B. It is important that students know the general University regulations and the Faculty regulations that apply to their studies. 1.1 General University regulations The general University regulations that apply to all students and faculties are set out in the University Calendar Book. 1.2 Faculty regulations Faculty regulations that relate specifically to the degrees offered by the Faculty of the Humanities are in this book. 1.3 Degrees offered The three levels of postgraduate qualifications offered by the Faculty of the Humanities are (1) Baccalaureus Artium Honores (B.A.Hons.), Baccalaureus Societatis Scientiae Honores (B.Soc.Sc.Hons.), (2) Magister Artium (M.A.), Magister Societatis Scientiae (M.Soc.Sc.), and (3) Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.). 1.4 General admission requirements to postgraduate courses As a general rule, students are admitted to postgraduate studies and to each higher level of postgraduate study only if they fulfil the university requirements for registration, have completed the preliminary degree with a mark of 60% or more, and are accepted to the course they wish to study by the Head of Department. 1.5 The B.A.Hons. and B.Soc.Sc.Hons. degrees Unless otherwise specified, the B.A.Hons. and B.Soc.Hons. degrees are a one-year full-time or a two-year part-time study in a particular field. In general, the degrees require students to select and study courses for examination, and to research and write a mini-thesis. In general, too, the B.A.Hons. and B.Soc.Sc.Hons. form the first year of the two-year structured M.A./M.Soc.Sc. degrees. The specific details of each course differ, and students must acquaint themselves carefully with the requirements of the course they choose.

1.6 The M.A. and M.Soc.Sc. degrees Students generally have a choice between (1) a two-year structured M.A. and M.Soc.Sc. and (2) an M.A./M.Soc.Sc. by dissertation. (1) The two-year, full-time, structured M.A./M.Soc.Sc. require students to select and study courses for examination, and to research and write a mini-dissertation. In general, students can register for the structured M.A./M.Soc.Sc. degree immediately after completing the B.A./B.Soc.Sc. degree, with the B.A.Hons./B.Soc.Sc.Hons. degree as an "exit" at the end of the first year. (2) The M.A./M.Soc.Sc. by dissertation requires students to write a substantial research essay on a topic agreed upon with the Head of Department or a supervisor he appoints. In certain courses a number of articles published in accredited journals is accepted instead of a dissertation. As the specific requirements of courses differ, students must acquaint themselves carefully with the requirements of the course they choose. 1.7 The Ph.D. degree Unless otherwise specified, a Doctorate is awarded to a M.A./M.Soc.Sc. graduate who writes a research thesis of noteworthy substance. In certain courses a body of published or publishable articles is accepted instead of a thesis. Students must acquaint themselves with the specific requirements of their course. 1.8 The following postgraduate qualifications may be awarded in the Faculty:

Admission to the honours degree in Anthropology is subject to approval by the head of department. 2. Students must have completed a three-year bachelor's degree, or be in possession of an equivalent qualification, in which case an additional evaluation may be required before admission. POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME FOR LANGUAGE PRACTICE

The Postgraduate Programme for Language Practice offers a Diploma, and a Master's degree. Students specialize in any one of five fields: (1) Translation; (2) Interpreting; (3) Lexicography and Terminology; (4) Language Management; and (5) Language Technology. The presentation of modules is subject to the availability of lecturers. 1. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The postgraduate courses in Language Practice are market-driven and outcomes-based. The career opportunities for students completing the courses include those of translator, conference interpreter, lexicographer, terminologist, language planner and manager, and language technologist. ADMISSION TO THE COURSES; THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DIPLOMA AND THE M.A. DEGREE In general, students must fulfil the requirements of 1.4 of General Information. Those requirements are relaxed in that a wide range of Bachelor's degrees are considered appropriate for admission to courses in the Language Practice Programme. Students must apply to the Director, who may admit them to the Programme subject to their taking additional modules. The Diploma is the equivalent of the first year of the Master's degree. For this reason, students registered for the Diploma who wish to continue may be admitted to the second year of the Master's degree, and students registered for the Master's degree may "exit" with a Diploma if they wish to discontinue studies after completing their first year of the Master's degree. 2.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN LANGUAGE PRACTICE

1. INFORMATION This degree aims at the advancement of political expertise and the development of political management orientated skills in an environment of rapid change (transformation) in order to comply with the needs in terms of institutional capacity building, leadership development, and the promotion of a value system which complements good governance and forms the basis of democratic government. 2. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS (a) The institutional rules of the university regarding admission for the masters degree (General Regulation A80) are applicable for admission to this degree. (b) Seeing that only a limited number of students per year will be admitted, students are subjected to a selection process where academic merits and/or work experience play an important role. The examination and the assignment count 50% each with respect to the calculation of the final module marks. A sub-minimum of 40% must be obtained in the examination for the candidate to pass the module. Dissertations are subjected to internal and/or external evaluation. EXIT LEVEL OUTCOME (Subject to approval) After the successful completion of the first year (8 modules) it is possible for a student to qualify for a postgraduate diploma in Governance and political transformation. This is only applicable to students not interested in completing the second year of the Masters qualification. In cases where students want to complete the Masters course after obtaining a post graduate diploma in a few years time, the following is applicable: Re-admission only after assessment of the academic performance of a candidate. Preference will be given to students already in the program if there are too many students. Another two modules (value 32 credits) must be completed. Second Year A course in Methodology, MGT721, (16 credits) has to be completed. Only students who successfully completed six courses (including the four compulsory courses) in the first year, will be admitted to the second year of the said course. 1. ADMISSION TO THE DIPLOMA In general, students must fulfil the requirements mentioned in 1.4 of General Information. In particular, to be admitted to the Postgraduate Diploma in Social Services, students must have a four year degree in service-rendering science and be registered with an appropriate professional council. Only candidates qualified and registered as social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses or occupational therapists are

admitted to the learning areas Play Therapy, Narrative method, and Loss and Trauma. Only registered social workers are admitted to the learning area Social Work Management and Supervision. 2. CURRICULUM Students must choose one module in a particular learning area. As not all learning areas are necessarily presented each year, students are advised to consult with the Head of Department before registering.
