BOE moves forward with
capital improvements
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
After receiving the approval of
state aid from the Department of
Education, the Cherry Hill Board
of Education moved forward with
a series of capital improvements
to nearly all buildings in the dis-
trict.
The list of improvements, to-
taling $17.9 million, encompasses
40 projects. Work on the projects
will commence next summer.
The Department of Education
granted $7.16 million to help pay
for the capital projects. The dis-
trict will pay for the remainder,
nearly $10.75 million.
Public Information Officer
Barbara Wilson said that out of
the $10.75 million the district is
paying, much of it is already ac-
counted for in the budget, and it
should not have an effect on tax-
payers.
New boilers, which will be in-
stalled in time for the 2014-15
school year, are the biggest proj-
ect. Thirty-seven boilers will be
installed across the district, along
with new boiler rooms and tem-
perature-control systems that will
allow for better energy efficiency.
This is something that has
been on our need list for some
time, Wilson said. They were
projects that were a definite need
to do and wouldve been complet-
ed with or without the states sup-
port.
The boiler project ties in loose-
ly to the districts initiative to re-
duce its overall expenditures
through energy conservation.
The district has agreements with
PSE&G to upgrade lighting con-
trols throughout the district.
Eighty percent of the improve-
ments are being paid for by
PSE&G.
Other projects are also slated to
take place over the next year. A
project to correct the stormwater
infiltration issue at Cherry Hill
High School East will take place.
It is the costliest project at $3.6
million, with almost $1.5 million
of that paid with state aid.
There are leaks and a
drainage issue, Wilson said.
The wall in question needs to be
entirely replaced.
Another major project is the re-
placement of the roof at Bret
Harte Elementary School. The
cost of that project is a little less
than $1.3 million.
The projects we are looking at
are not going to be visible
changes, but they are necessary
infrastructure improvements,
Wilson said.
A full list of the capital im-
provements was included in the
agenda for the Dec. 17 meeting
and can be found on the Cherry
Hill Public Schools website at

The Cherry Hill Police Depart-
ment is participating in the
statewide 2013 Drive Sober or
Get Pulled Over driving while
intoxicated enforcement cam-
paign through Jan. 2.
As part of the initiative, the de-
partment was awarded a $4,400
grant by the New Jersey Division
of Highway Traffic Safety. Cherry
Hill Police will be conducting
high visibility patrols targeting
intoxicated drivers during this
holiday season.
This statewide campaign is
part of a national effort to raise
awareness about the dangers of
drinking and driving. Last year
in New Jersey, 19 percent of all
motor vehicle fatalities were alco-
hol-related.
The police department offers
these tips:
Take mass transit, a taxicab,
or ask a sober friend to drive you
home.
Spend the night where the ac-
tivity is held.
If you see an impaired driver
on the road, contact law enforce-
ment. Your actions may save
someones life, and inaction could
cost a life.
Always buckle up, every ride.
Its your best defense against an
impaired driver.
If you are intoxicated and
traveling on foot, the safest way to
get home is to take a cab or have a
sober friend or family member
drive or escort you to your
doorstep.
Be responsible. If someone
you know is drinking, do not let
that person get behind the wheel.
For additional information on
the dangers of drinking and driv-
ing and on the program, visit

The Sun
On Dec. 13, a group of teens gathered at
Carmen Tilelli Community Center for cup-
cake decorating and a dance party. It was a
fun night for all, with the teens laughing,
playing games and enjoying each others
company.
If one were to take a quick glance, they
would have never guessed that the
teenagers were a mix of community serv-
ice students and teens with special needs.
Teen Scene is a program designed to
have teenagers with special needs interact
with other teens from the community.
Five years ago, Ted Kail started the pro-
gram while he was at Cherry Hill High
School West as a community service proj-
ect. The idea was for him and other com-
munity service volunteers from the school
to get together with kids with special needs
and just interact with them.
At first, it started simply as a communi-
ty service program, because I was a junior
in high school, he said. Another individ-
ual, she helped me out. And then it just
grew and it got bigger and bigger and big-
ger.
All of a sudden, we were sitting in a
room with 50 to 60 people. And the coolest
part is that you cant even tell who is com-
munity service and who is an attendee.
According to Kails mom, Jill Greenberg
Kail, the mixture of the teens is incredibly
seamless. There are no cliques present at
the program. No one is found standing on
the sideline. Everyone gets along, a feat
that is remarkable for a group of
teenagers, Greenberg Kail said.
It creates long-lasting relationships,
Kail said. We have kids coming back from
college just to come to these events, be-
cause they truly became friends with
everyone. And thats what its all about.
One of the community service volun-
teers, Rebecca Horner, said the program
has changed her life since she joined it last
year.
I was really quiet when I came, she
said. But as the kids got friendly, we got
friendly with each other. It has made me
such a better person. Im more outgoing be-
cause of it. I make more friends because of
it. These people here, these are my good
friends.
Horners testaments are not just ones
shared by the volunteers. Brothers Sean
and Leo Curran are teens with special
needs who have become regular attendees
at Teen Scene. The pair has been able to as-
sociate with kids they otherwise wouldnt
talk to and partake in activities that they
dont get to experience outside the pro-
gram.
I like to dance, Sean said about the
programs activities. I like to dance and
eat.
The program started with very little no-
toriety or sources of funding. Now, with
the cooperation of Cherry Hill Township,
Cherry Hill West, the recreation depart-
ment and the townships Alliance on Alco-
hol and Drug Abuse, the program has re-
ceived the help it needs to be successful.
For example, Greenberg Kail said the Al-
liance on Alcohol and Drug Abuse paid for
the pizza at the Dec. 12 meeting.
The success of the program was recent-
ly recognized on a national level. Teen
Scene received a Promising Practices
award from the Character Education Part-
nership. The award simply serves as proof
that, regardless if theyre in community
service or special needs classes, nothing
can hold these teens back from just being
teens.
Teens can be teens at nationally recognized program
H
ow many times have you seen
it: People driving around town
throwing caution to the wind,
as if they were on a NASCAR track?
Youd think someone was giving away
free hundred dollar bills.
Do they not know we have children
walking around town? Do they not
care about the safety of other mo-
torists? Do they not care about their
own safety?
Seems like today, everyone is in a
rush at all times; it seems like its get-
ting worse with each passing year.
Somehow, by some miracle, New Jer-
sey drivers arent the worst in the na-
tion, at least according to an annual
study recently released by CarInsur-
anceComparison.com. In fact, were
only the 32nd worst state-full of driv-
ers. If were only middle of the pack,
wed hate to be on the road in
Louisiana, whose drivers were collec-
tively ranked as the worst in the na-
tion.
Even though were not as bad as
some of our American brethren, its
worth repeating: Slow down out there!
Nothing can be of such importance
that you need to speed and drive errati-
cally...every time you drive! Its just not
possible that your wife is giving birth
for the fifth time this week.
Our children are walking our
streets. Our elderly are still behind the
wheel. And our ready, willing and able
are out on the roads, trying to get to or
from a New Years celebration.
Lets make sure everyone gets where
theyre going safely. Lets all share the
road with each other, and lets stop
being such maniacs even if were not
the worst.
in our opinion
Slow down out there
Use caution when driving on the roads, especially this time of year
Your thoughts
How bad is the driving out there? How can
we get better? Should more regulations
be put on New Jersey drivers to improve
safety? Let your thoughts be heard
through a letter to the editor.

12 THE CHERRY HILL SUN DECEMBER 2531, 2013
The Camden County Sheriff s
Office participated in a statewide
sweep to pick up child support of-
fenders and other individuals
with active warrants. This opera-
tion captured 76 individuals with
102 active warrants out for their
arrest and more than $1.39 mil-
lion on warrants owed at the time
of the arrest.
Sheriff Chuck Billingham said
the operation was successful and
provided accountability to indi-
viduals who are forgoing court-
ordered payments to support chil-
dren.
These sweeps take place on a
regular basis in order to bring ac-
countability to parents who forget
about their fiduciary responsibili-
ty to their families, Billingham
said. This operation sends a clear,
loud message that we mean busi-
ness and skipping on your child
support payment is not a joke.
The Sheriff s Office filed addi-
tional charges on individuals
ranging from possession of con-
trolled dangerous substance to re-
sisting arrest. The arrests made
recently, over the course of 48
hours, represent a small subsec-
tion of the 2,147 active Camden
County fugitives with more than
6,000 total active warrants.
The statewide sweeps have an
impact, Billingham said. After
bringing a busload of deadbeat
dads to the jail for processing,
these individuals know that they
cant run or hide from supporting
their family.
Santa came out with his
friends from the Marines to JML
Financial Groups office in Cher-
ry Hill on Dec. 12 to accept toy do-
nations for their Toys for Tots
program.
Anyone who came out and
brought a toy was able to speak
with members of the Marine
Corps and enjoy donated coffee
from Dunkin Donuts and break-
fast sandwiches from Vitos Pizza.
All together, there were approxi-
mately 500 toys collected and do-
nated.
Joe Yocavitch, president, and
Traci Kelly, vice president, of
JML Financial Group, were over-
whelmed by the outpouring of
support. Weve been having an
open house for a few years now to
collect donations for Toys for
Tots, he said. We think it is so
important that all children enjoy
the magic of Christmas but we
know that times are tough for
some. To be able to provide toys
for kids is a gift for us as well as
them.

Three coaches in three seasons is not
typically the recipe for a program to
have continued success. Consider the
Lions swim team of Cherry Hill High
School West the exception.
Under first-year head coach Dan
Rogers, the Lions finished last season
with a record of 10-2. The hope is to con-
tinue building on that success.
Im definitely looking for us to be
more consistent, Rogers said. Its al-
ways going to take time. The team has to
get used to my style. I had to adjust as
well. Hopefully were moving past that
and can add to Wests tradition of being
competitive.
Adding to that tradition is the fact
that West has been home to some of the
state's finest swimmers, divers and
coaches for many years. Among the best
aquatic athletes in the school's history
are Cherry Hill West Athletic Hall of
Fame inductees Elaine Johnson, Barry
Adamson, John Yacovelle and the ex-

"I am so impressed with your center and the work you are doing. I have been a
teacher for 35 years and this is the first time a tutoring center has worked so
closely with me. The results speak to the success of your programs."

traordinary Alison Maisch who
was named South Jersey's Out-
standing Female Diver all four of
her years at West. Maisch went
on to become an NCAA national
champion at LSU and a silver
medalist at the 1991 Pan-Ameri-
can Games.
More recent, Lady Lion squads
have included 1996 two-event state
champion and All-American 200
IM swimmer Leslie Hoh; All-
American back stroke and former
national record-holder Jennelle
Ritchie; All-American diver Alli-
son May, who placed third in
NISCA's 1998 National High
School Diving Championships;
All-American freestyle sprinter
and butterfly champion Katie
Kopil; and All-American diver
Liza Marianni, who was the state
champion and was named All-
America three times. Ritchie and
Kopil recently were inducted into
the schools Hall of Fame as well.
The tradition is something the
school and the team take pride
in, Rogers said. Each year, we
want to add to that legacy.
The Lady Lion swimming and
diving team will forever hold the
honor of having won the first
women's state team champi-
onship in 1974. Combined teams
added two more crowns in 1987
and 1988. West captured the 1998
Public Division B State Champi-
onship, defeating opponents by an
average of 53 points along the way
in the state tournament. In 2005-
06, the Lady Lions ended
Vineland's streak of 62 straight
meet victories and five consecu-
tive state championships by de-
feating the Fighting Clan 87-83 in
a thrilling South Section Semifi-
nal en route to their first Public A
State Championship. Most recent-
ly, South and Central NJ sectional
titles were added in 2007, 2011 and
2012. Rogers is quick to share the
credit.
Our teams owe their winning
traditions to the commitment of
their members to the water. Many
are year-round contributors to
United States Swimming and
YMCA clubs as well as leaders of
South Jersey's Tri-County Swim-
ming Pool Association teams in
the summer, Rogers said.
For the Lions, they hope that
commitment will pay off as early
as this season.
We have the talent, the ability
and the will to succeed, Rogers
said. Its just about going out and
doing it.
