March 08, 2010 Manual Addenda

New for this release: This release expands the !"Aware functionalit# of the $ongestion Anal#sis feature %# adding two new features& " !'( )radio fre*uenc# interference detection+ " ecommended A, $hannel These features are a-aila%le in $ongestion Anal#sis onl# if the underl#ing dri-er and chip support the !'( feature. .therwise, onl# the !"Aware feature is displa#ed in Congestion Analysis. Also, these features are a-aila%le onl# on computers that are running /indows 0ista1/indows 2. To open Congestion Analysis, right"clic3 the utilit# icon in the notification area, and then clic3 Congestion Analysis. 4eing a%le to identif# the t#pe of the source of interference helps users understand wh# the# ma# %e experiencing slower connection speeds and loss of connection. /ith this understanding, users can ta3e steps such as mo-ing out of range of an interference source or turning it off.

RFID Feature 4# default, the !'( feature detects different sources of ! interference that are within range. .nl# one of the detected interference sources is identified, howe-er, and it is identified %# t#pe. The t#pes of sources that can currentl# %e identified are& - ,hone - 0ideo $amera - Microwa-e .-en - 4a%# Monitor - 4luetooth (e-ice - 0ideo $amera or 4a%# Monitor - 4luetooth (e-ice or 4a%# Monitor - 0ideo camera or ,hone - Un3nown The t#pe of the detected interference source is displa#ed near the %ottom of $ongestion Anal#sis in the Interference source group %ox. /hen $ongestion Anal#sis is open, the detected interference source t#pe is updated periodicall# if it has changed.

Modes of Operation The !'( feature has two modes, Manual and Automatic. 4# default, the !'( feature operates in Manual mode. Users can switch to Automatic mode %# selecting the Enable auto interference detection chec3 %ox in Congestion Analysis. The automatic mode wor3s onl# when the client is connected to an A,. Manual ode& 'n this mode, when the user opens $ongestion Anal#sis, the t#pe of interference source )if an# has %een detected+ is displa#ed. Note& The dri-er disa%les this feature if there are more than 20 A,s within range. 'f this feature is disa%led, the t#pe of interference source detected is displa#ed as 56ois# en-ironment.5 Therefore, the testing of the functionalit# of this feature should %e done in a controlled en-ironment in which there are no more than 20 A,s within range. Auto atic ode& 'n this mode, whene-er an interference source is detected, the user is notified %# a %u%%le message that is displa#ed a%o-e the utilit# icon in the notification area. $lic3ing this message opens $ongestion Anal#sis, in which the t#pe of the detected interference source is displa#ed. The t#pe of the detected interference source is also displa#ed in /ireless 7og. (uring an acti-e session, there is a 80"minute inter-al %etween notifications.

Reco

ended A! Channel Feature

'f mo-ing out of range of the source of ! interference or turning off the de-ice causing the interference is not possi%le or if doing so does not apprecia%l# impro-e the *ualit# of the connection, changing the channel on which the A, is operating might reduce congestion and interference. The recommended A, channel, which is %ased on an anal#sis of the detected congestion and interference, is displa#ed to the right of Reco ended channel in Congestion Analysis. Users can attempt to change to the recommended channel %# clic3ing Change Channel. 'f the A, supports d#namic channel change, a re*uest is sent to the A,, and, if the re*uest is honored, the channel is changed to the one recommended, and the new channel num%er is displa#ed under Congestion "current channel#. 'f the A, does not support d#namic channel change, the user is redirected to the main A, configuration page. 6ote& The Change Channel %utton is a-aila%le onl# when the computer is connected to an A,. Therefore, it is not a-aila%le for ad hoc )'499+ connections or when there is no A, connection.
