January 2014
To a thinking person, a new year
brings a mixture of anticipation and
anxiety.

2014 might bring something surpris-
ingly good. Take a lesson from Ameri-
can history. At the beginning of 1814,
when the British had the upper hand:
Who could have known that the end of
the year would have the U.S. holding
them off?

On the other hand, 2014 might deliver
a sudden tragedy. Consider world his-
tory. At the start of 1914, few people
anticipated World War I would begin a
scant half year later.

So, what will 2014 be like for you? It
might bring a new family member, or a
new job, or greater financial re-
sourcesalthough a person might an-
ticipate those blessings ahead of time.

Instead, its whats tragic that we never
see on the horizon. Internationally, that
could be war. Nationally, it could be an
economic crash. Locally, it could in-
2014!like 1814? or 1914?
clude a crime wave. Personally, you
might suffer: an accident, disease, a
disaster, personal strife, or even death.
What if thats what 2014 brings to
you?

Take heart! Heres your comfort: You
are entering 2014 along with the same
Savior who accompanied you during
all of 2013!

No matter what you face in the coming
year, God entered his creation to res-
cue you. Christ took on human flesh in
order to redeem your flesh. And the
Holy Spirit stands ready eager even!
to proclaim the good news to you
again this year.

Because you belong to Jesus, 2014 is
bound to be a blessed year for you. It
will be a year for you to serve your
Savior and his peopleand a year in
which Christ will never leave you nor
forsake you!

- Pastor Walther

Pebbles From the ROC...
The Open House to celebrate the 10
th
Anniversary of our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (THE
ROC) for Youth was much enjoyed by everyone who attended. Even though the celebration ended up conflict-
ing with the Packer game and the slippery streets due to the snowy weather, many came out to enjoy the
event. The highlight of the celebration was the video comments by teens expressing their feelings about THE
ROC. Check out THE ROC history highlights and all the teen interviews at: http://youtu.be/dgHyW4u__ng (or
call to request link). What a joy it is to hear from the teens how much they appreciate hearing Gods Word,
along with the recreation and safety of THE ROC. Another blessing from the celebration was the offering giv-
en which totaled approximately $1,100. $1,358 was also received from a door offering held at one of our
churches and $1,000 came from one of our church Ladies Aid. The remaining debt on the building has there-
fore been reduced to approximately $8,500. We thank our Lord for His grace in Christ and for all of you who
have been so wonderfully supportive of THE ROC mission and ministry.
Stewardship Anecdote

What hidden ministry does your offering support?

If you happen to have attended worship at 3:30 during Advent, you may have noticed them.

About 25 sixth and seventh graders from the middle school join Pastor Walther for catechism class--
every Wednesday of the school year, from 3:45 to 5:15. (Eighth graders often meet Pastor Jensen
along with their parents immediately afterwards.)

In the sixth and seventh grade classes, one fellow was recently baptized. Another is not even from a
member family, but still faithfully attendsever since he was invited by friends in the class.

Incidentally, the sixth grade class has a unique distinction: three sets of twins!

In honor of Jesus, and in keeping with the Spirits rich blessings to you:
Keep rendering your cheerful and generous offerings in 2014.
A New Beginning
Art Linkletter, the well-known TV star, author and lecturer, was dealt the most
painful experience of his life when his youngest daughter, Diane, died. She ex-
perimented with drugs and subsequently took her own life.

After a period of mourning, Art decided to work against drug abuse so other families wouldnt
suffer a similar fate. He embarked on a lecture tour throughout the United States speaking at
schools, churches, and other places about the danger and devastation of illegal drug use.

By taking this positive action of helping others, Art found that his life began to change for the
better. His faith in Christ was renewed. He prioritized his life so that he shared more of himself
and his resources. He learned how to better deal with lifes crushing blows. By serving God
and others, he discovered a new life of hope and joy.

SCHOOL YEAR THEME 2013-2014
JESUS: Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given
to men by which we must be saved." Acts 4:12
General News
Christmas 2013
Our gracious Lord and Savior has been very good to all of us. He has come and offered himself as our substitute to take
away all of our sins. We are now justified before God because of our Saviors perfect life and innocent death in our place.
Remember this as you give gifts to your loved ones. Discuss the blessings of being one of our Saviors children. Talk
about it openly with your children and other family members. This is the real celebration of Christmas. Come and
worship your Savior over the Christmas break and remember to keep Jesus in your hearts and life as the first priority.
Gods blessings this Christmas season. Have a blessed Christmas with your families. School resumes on Monday,

Voters Meeting
The voters elected a new chairman of our congregation. Pastor Charles Iles is the new chairman and will be serving us for
the next three years. Many thanks were expressed for the outgoing chairman Mr. Randy Meis. A thank you was also
given to Mr. Charles Higgins and Mr. Mark Cichanofsky for their service on the Board of School Ministry the past nine
years. May God bless these men for their faithful service. The new Board men elected at the voter's meeting were Ryan
Strohm and Nathan Scharrer. Mr. Todd Buske was reelected and will continue to serve as Board Chairman. May God
bless our new leaders in the years to come. The new work plan was adopted which showed a very small increase in the
budget for the 2014 calendar year. A request was made for members to offer to serve as hosts for the MLC student
teachers coming this January 25
th
. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 P.M.

MLC Student Teaching Program
Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota serves as our training school for our Lutheran elementary teachers and
future pastors. Each year the College partners with various schools throughout our Synod to provide a place where the
students can do their professional semester of student teaching. St. Marks school partners every year with College to
provide for this very important program. As part of our responsibility at St. Marks we need to host the student teachers
who are assigned to our school. The student teachers who are assigned are to experience what it is like in a congregation
and a school of our Synod. Host families are needed for these student teachers while they do their student teaching. The
student teaching last 10 weeks. The host provides housing and some meals for the student teachers. The host family is
reimbursed by the college for their expenses. Once again St. Marks will have two student teachers coming on January
25
th
and they will be with us until the first week of April. If you are willing to open up you home and be a host family
please contact Mr. Uttech as soon as possible. If you need more information about this program please request that
information form Mr. Uttech as well. If host families cannot be found, then we will not be able to continue serving our
College and Synod in this program. My prayer is that the members of St. Marks will offer to serve as host families once
again. Please call the school office for more information at 262-8501.

Grandparents Day
The kitchen will be having a Grandparents day once a month for each class. The Grandparents are invited to come and
eat with their grandchildren. The cost is $3.25 per person and if you plan on coming, please make reservations with the
office or kitchen so we could have an idea of a count. We will be having Grandparents Day for the 4
th
graders on January
15th. Mr. Nottlings class eats at 11:40 A.M. We would love to have many grandparents join us that day.
**************************************************************************************************
Emergency School Closings
The winter weather often brings weather related school closings. When the weather forecast is for snow, ice, or other
related issues school may be closed. Please watch and listen to the news carefully for announcements about school
closings. St. Marks School goes with the Watertown Unified Public school District for all school closings. If
Watertown Public is closed, so is St. Marks. If Watertown public schools close early because of impending weather
related issues, then we close early as well. We will make every effort to call you and let you know that school is closing
early. If at any time, any parent wants to pick up their children early because of weather problems, they may do so.
Parents will never be asked to drive children to school if the parents feel that the roads are unsafe to drive. We pray for a

What did you say?
Listening is a lost art.
Living in an information age, facts, opinions, and other bits
continually bombard us. Te average person cannot keep up with
it. So, he begins to flter, delete, and tune out. Consequently,
listening skills have eroded, and we are more distant than a
generation ago despite the many means to stay more connected today.
Why is listening so important? First, listening is one of the primary ways to learn.
Among the modes of learning, listening is among the most important. Secondly,
listening is a sign of respect. It is sensenot arrogancewhen a speaker wants others
to listen and learn from him. Finally, listening shows care. Genuine listening tells
people that we care about them.
Scripture speaks about listening, too. While the quantity of verses about listening is far
less than those about talking, Gods Word emphasizes listenings importance. James
said, Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry
(1:19). Solomon wrote, To answer beforelisteningthat is folly and shame (Prov.
18:13). Te young Samuel said, Speak,Lord, for your servant is listening (1 Sam. 3:9).
When we listen, God creates opportunities for us to help fellow Christians, to witness,
and to put his love into action for others. By listening, we determine what to say: the
law to condemn proud
sinners, the gospel
to give hope to the
penitent, or words of
support to spurone
another on toward
love and good deeds
(Hebrews 10:24).
To this end, God make
us all great listeners!

Why am I here at Lakeside?
Im here because I witness students
embarking on an incredible transition
in their lives. Te changes that occur
between freshman and senior year are
immense and its during this time that
they chart the trajectory of their lives.
For me to be able to be a part of that is
meaningful.
Some of the most memorable times at
Lakeside involve seeing the kids interact
outside of school. Sometimes I preach
for A Cappella, and I eat breakfast with
the kids. Teyll be quite entertaining as
they play group games and joke around
between services. Taking seniors to
Madison and trying to plug them into the
WELS chapel system and exposing them
to diferent worldviews on the street is
quite fun too. Teyre all so nervous, but
then aferwards they realize it wasnt that
scary talking to people and ofen theyll
go above and beyond in their assignment,
interviewing more than required. Other
times that stay in my mind are the
personal interactions: the track athletes
who realize they have to give glory to God,
the dating couple that ask if they should
continue their relationship in college
because its long distance, or the kid whos
experiencing challenges that are more
difcult than anything Ive had to face.
Sometimes the kids will also impact each
other. I recently had a senior give a speech
in class. As she spoke she admitted that
when she was a freshman she did not
believe in God. She said she was pushed to
attend Lakeside and there were not many
Christians in her family. She said that
she came to faith when reading the Old
Testament freshman year. She is now the
only Christian in her immediate family,
and she is not afraid to express her faith.

Tank you for helping Haitian orphans with us
In December, LLHS Teens for Christ decided to show their love for the Lord by ofering support
to our orphanages in Haiti. According to ELS missionaries Dr. Terry and Mary Schultz, although
needs are many, their major need is underwear. Tis turned into quite an undertaking since within
the 10 orphanages, there are almost 300 boys and girls, so the entire student body was asked to
help and to take the request to their church homes.
When the project ofcially ended on the last regular school day December 16, over $500 in cash
had been collected from students, boosted by bakery/drink sales before school (thanks to Beauty
and the Bean in Fort & Fort Pick & Save). Tere were 73 packs of underwear and 50 boxes of
crayons and markers, along with many other school supplies. Additional donations also came
from Jeferson Wal-Mart, NASCO & East Towne Boston Store employees, as well as a $500
youth service grant that will enable us to get all these supplies safely to Haiti from the Jeferson
County Chapter Board of Trivent Financial, and a $500 Associates in Action grant (facilitated
by FACE teacher Sandi Corlett) from Kohls in Johnson Creek. Tank you also to the Federation
congregations, whose donations were still coming in at print, and to generous groups like Jesus
Cares in Fort. Teens for Christ members and advisor Ruth Hirschfeld were privileged to organize,
to work at cider, cocoa and bake sales, & to talk up the collection in homerooms.

Wasnt that so special? Bauer said. Some of
these guys (here tonight) go all the way back to
my very frst year.
Senior guard Micah Torgerson, who scored 12
points and was a terror on the defensive end for
the Warriors, said that Bauers coaching impact
goes beyond the basketball court.
Its defnitely a great experience, he said.
Hes taught me a lot of things, even outside of
basketball. Its special.
