A set of seventeen iPads was donated to
the Pre-Kindergarten classes at St. Mary
School in Gaylord by Pre-Kindergarten par-
ents, Chris Deckrow and Crystal Hendershot.
Teacher Erin Matts couldn't be more excited
for this spectacular new learning tool in both
her morning and afternoon classes at St.
Mary's.
"It has made learning in Pre-K even more
fun and interesting for my students," said
Matts. Pre-Kindergarten students are work-
ing on handwriting skills, writing, math,
reading, and even doing their daily calendar
time with their very own iPads!
Reese Bober, from Erin Matts' morning
class said, "Our iPads are so cool! I love hav-
ing them at school." Noah
Liverance from the after-
noon class said, "I love hav-
ing my own iPad at school to
work on, and I really like
doing calendar on here too!"
Matts relates that she
couldn't be happier or more
blessed to have such cutting
edge technology in her class.

Saturday, May 11th, the trash was a-flying out of
Gaylorddestined for an environmentally con-
scious rebirth as free residential shred day, elec-
tronics recycling day, and spring cleanup for the
City of Gaylord all took place in one day.
American Waste reported that 265 yards of
assorted items were picked up as part of the
Gaylord Spring Cleanup, an event they have been
participating in for 10 years. Crossroads
Industries saw 65 vehicles come through with
papers to be shredded, resulting in approximately
2,100 pounds of now unintelligible bits of paper
that will be recycled. At the Gaylord DPW yard,
Vintage Tech Recyclers collected a full semi-truck
and a half load, or 24,500 pounds, of various elec-
tronic items, including computers, appliances,
etc.
Steve Chalker, general manager for Vintage Tech
Recyclers, states; Gaylord was the largest in state
that day (they did six events on Saturday); Gaylord
was most successful. Most of that gets recycled by
Vintage Tech staff at our facility in Canton,
Michigan and some will be processed in Chicago
and Philadelphia. It is all disassembled by our
staff, whoe separate wires, steel, hard drives, bat-
teries, etc., and it is then processed through the
commodity market for recycling.
Wellington Farm, USA near Grayling will open its gates for
the 2013 season on Saturday, May 18. The historic farm will
be open weekends only until June 15 after which the 60-acre
historic complex will be open 7 days a week until Halloween.
Wellington Farm, USA is a living history park depicting life as
it was lived in a rural, mid-western farming community dur-
ing the Great Depression. Wellington Farm has been
acclaimed as being the only living history park in the nation
that portrays specifically 1932, the very worst year of the
Great Depression. The park opens each morning at 9:00 a.m.
and the first guided tour departs the Visitors Center at 10.
The last tour of the day leaves the visitor center at 4:30 p.m.
Beginning June 15, the farm will be open on Friday and
Saturday until 7 p.m. with the last tour leaving the visitor
Center at 6. Price of admission is $7.50 for adults and $5.50
for students and seniors. .
One attraction of the park is the Stittsville Church, which
was built in the 1880s near the town of Stittsville in
Missaukee County. It served its community well for about a
century but by the 1980s there were no longer enough peo-
ple attending services to provide for the upkeep of the build-
ing. The remaining congregation merged with the
Moorestown congregation and ownership of the building
was turned over to Norwich Township. In 2005, the church
was moved to Wellington Farm to save it from demolition.
The church has now been completely restored, the outside to
its original 1880s appearance and the interior is restored to
the 1930s. Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 19 there
will be a special Farmer Church held in the historic structure.
The public is cordially invited to attend Farmer Church.
There is no admission charged for this service, which lasts
about 45 minutes. Park in the parking lot by the Visitor
Center and walk back to the church.
Another attraction, which will be opening on June 29, is
the Perry Lamkin Historic Display. Perry Lamkin lived in
Whittaker, Michigan and in the 1870s he invented, built and
patented the worlds first dowel lathe and the worlds first
belt sander. Both of these machines have been gifted to
Wellington Farm, USA and will be made available for the
public to see in a special building constructed just for that
purpose. The building will be opened at a special Grand
Opening Ceremony to be held June 29 as a part of Wellington
Farms Annual Dairy Days event.
Wellington Farm Park, Inc. is a 5013 non-profit corpora-
tion. Welling Farm, USA is located at 6944 S. Military Road
southwest of Grayling. The farm is easily accessed from
either Exit 251 of I-75 or Exit 206 of US-127. Further infor-
mation can be obtained by calling 989 348 5187 during busi-
ness hours or visiting the website at www.wellingtonfarm-

Outdoors Expo Continued...
community organizations, LaVigne said.
Were all short of members. So, we decided
to pool our resources.
Thats because the first-ever sports expo is
more than just another event for outdoor
enthusiast. Hopefully, it will also be a suc-
cessful fund-raiser for the groups in funding
youth programs and activities in the
Cheboygan area.
Our goal is to put the money right back
into the community for our kids, LaVigne
added.
The outdoors expo is scheduled for noon
to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 17; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
on Saturday, May 18, and then 11 a.m. to 4
p.m. on Sunday, May 19.
Weve been working on it for two years,
LaVigne said. Its going well. Weve got a lot
of support from local businesses. Hopefully,
it will bring a lot of people to Cheboygan.
Were doing all we can, so theyll want to
come back next year.
To make sure the event is well planned,
organizers gained support from the staff of
Woods-n-Water News, one of the premier
outdoor publications in Michigan and host
of the successful Outdoor Weekend Show in
Imlay City.
We wanted to do this right, LaVigne said.
And, one of the goals of organizers is to
make this not just a mans event, but one for
the entire family. Its one reason LaVigne said
hes excited about the variety of exhibitors
signed up already.
Theres not a lot of duplication, LaVigne
said. Its been interesting to see it develop.
We just dont want it to be a mans day,
he added. Were trying to make it an event
for the entire family, so they can come to
Cheboygan for an entire weekend and have a
good time.
As an unintended bonus, LaVigne said
organizers accidentally scheduled the sports
and outdoors expo on the same weekend as
the Cheboygan Gun & Knife Show, May 18-
19, at the Ralph G. Cantile Arena/Cheboygan
Ice Rink. But, that might actually turn out to
be a plus, for all concerned, he said, with the
two events now seeing how they might work
together in promoting the separate happen-
ings.
The show should be big, he said. Thats
what we want for it, for it to be big. We want
it to succeed.
Matthew Friday, executive director of the
Cheboygan Chamber of Commerce, said hes
excited to see such an event develop, giving
the area another chance to show what it has
to offer visitors. Absolutely, Friday said.
This is going to be a huge shot in the arm
for Cheboygan at an important time of the
season. The outdoors is so important to
northern Michigan. Were really excited
about it, it makes sense to have something
like this up here.
A complete schedule of events may be
found online at www.michiganoutdoorsex-
po.com. For more information on events in
the Cheboygan area, persons may contact
the Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce
by calling 800-968-3302 or go online at

Consumers Energy has spring and sum-
mer safety tips for Michigan residents in
recognition of National Electrical Safety
Month this May.
"It's important that residents take time to
become aware of the electric and natural gas
facilities around them, both overhead and
underground, to allow outdoor activities to
be accomplished safely this spring," said
Daniel J. Malone, Consumers Energy's senior
vice president of distribution and customer
operations. "Part of our promise to Michigan
includes working together for safer commu-
nities and reminding citizens about safety
hazards, both big and small, helps us keep
that promise."
As Michigan residents are venturing out-
side to work and play this spring and sum-
mer, Consumers Energy offers the following
tips:
- Never fly a kite close to a power line
and if a kite does get stuck on a power line,
do not attempt to remove it, as electric shock
could be fatal
- Parents should ensure children never
climb a utility pole or tree located near a
power line
- Do not trim branches or trees near power
lines themselves; call our forestry manage-
ment professionals for a free estimate at
(800) 582-4238 before starting a trimming
project.
- Look up before moving ladders, long
tools, or working around the outside of your
home to ensure you never come within 10
feet of an overhead wire
- When planting a tree, be aware of the
power lines and natural gas pipes that pro-
vide electricity and natural gas to your home
and throughout your neighborhood
- Always call 811 at least three working
days before doing any digging around your
property to have underground facilities
marked, free of charge
- Avoid planting tall-growing trees such as
large maples, oaks and most pines under
power lines
Additional details regarding planting trees,
digging safely and keeping your family safe
around electricity and natural gas this sea-
son can be found on the Consumers Energy
website at:
www.ConsumersEnergy.com/safety.
National Electrical Safety Month is initiat-
ed by Electrical Safety Foundation
International and is held each May to raise
awareness about electrical hazards, which
can cause electrical fires, injuries and death.
Visit www.esfi.org for more information.
Consumers Energy, the principal sub-
sidiary of CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS), pro-
vides natural gas and electricity to 6.8 mil-
lion of Michigan's 10 million residents in all
68 Lower Peninsula counties.

When looking to refurnish, redecorate or
simply revitalize the furniture and accessory
items in your home or cottage, dont miss the
opportunity to check out the amazing selec-
tion of vintage and custom furniture at
Kellys Antiques & Furniture Barn located in
Charlevoix. The fascinating facility encom-
passes over 7,000 square feet of ever chang-
ing vintage furniture and accessories, plus
another 1,500 square feet of custom furni-
ture items. From antique
wicker to Early American
and European imports, the
vast selection is sure to tan-
talize the imagination of vir-
tually every furniture shop-
per.
Don Kelly founded his
business back in 1985, as he
recalls, it was in a small
room off my garage. I loved
working with furniture, and
while attending a furniture
show I discovered a new type
of finish stripper that worked
extremely well. I went
home, tried it out, and start-
ed my new business. It kept
expanding and I moved into
my current location in 1990.
Kelly adds, Something we
specialize in is wicker furni-
ture items. This is a great
time of year to look for wick-
er furniture, as it is great
addition to porches or sun-
room areas during the warm
weather months. We also
sell lots of old pine, oak and
items made from other
woods as well. Vintage fur-
niture is generally made with
sold wood or very good
veneers. The workmanship
and craftsmanship is excel-
lent.
The services offered at
Kellys Antiques & Furniture
Barn also include customizing the size of
furniture to match the customers needs, and
they will paint, stain and refinish items to
match the customers dcor if they desire.
Kellys Antiques and Furniture Barn is
located at 6176 Old US 31 South in
Charlevoix. They are open Monday through
Friday from 8 am until 4 pm, and Saturday
and Sunday from 9:00 am until 1 pm. For
additional information, please call (231) 547-

Another school year is drawing to a
close so if you have young children,
theyre one year closer to the day when
they head off to college. And both you
and your children need to prepare for
that day. Your kids can do so by develop-
ing good study habits. As for you, its
never too soon to start preparing for the
high costs of higher education.
Just how costly is college? According
to the College Boards figures for the
2012-13 academic year, the average cost
for one year at an in-state four-year
public school is $22,261; for a private
school, the comparable expense is
$43,289. And if college costs continue
rising faster than the general inflation
rate, these figures will increase substan-
tially in the years ahead.
Of course, its entirely possible that
your kids will receive some scholarships
or grants, which can significantly lower
your out-of-pocket price tag.
Nonetheless, its probably a good idea
not to count on your offspring getting a
full ride to school which means that
you may want to start exploring college-
savings vehicles.
Fortunately, you have some attractive
options, one of which is a 529 plan.
When you contribute to a 529 plan,
your earnings accumulate tax free, pro-
vided they are used for qualified higher
education expenses. (Keep in mind,
though, that 529 plan distributions not
used for qualified expenses may be sub-
ject to federal and state income tax and
a 10% IRS penalty.) Furthermore, your
529 plan contributions may be
deductible from your state taxes.
However, 529 plans vary, so be sure to
check with your tax advisor regarding
deductibility.
A 529 plan offers
other benefits,
too. For one thing,
the lifetime con-
tribution limits for
529 plans are quite
generous; while
these limits vary
by state, some
plans allow contri-
butions well in
excess of $200,000.
Plus, a 529 plan is
flexible: if your
child, grandchild
or other benefici-
ary decides
against college or
vocational school,
you can transfer
the unused funds
to another family
member, tax and
penalty free.
While a 529 plan
may be a good
choice for build-
ing resources for
college, its cer-
tainly not the only choice. For example,
a Coverdell Education Savings Account,
like a 529 plan, can generate tax-free
earnings if the money is used for higher
education expenses. However, you can
typically only put in a maximum of
$2,000 per year to a Coverdell account.
Another college-savings possibility is
a custodial account, known as an UGMA
or UTMA, which offers some tax bene-
fits, no contribution limits, and may
have an impact on financial aid. You
might also consider investing in a zero-
coupon bond that matures just when
your child is ready for college. Unlike
other bonds, you wont receive regular
interest payments with a zero-coupon
bond, but you purchase it at a deep dis-
count, so you might find the affordabili-
ty factor to be worth considering. (Be
aware, though, that even though you
dont actually receive the interest pay-
ments annually, youll still be liable for
the taxes on them, so before purchasing
a zero coupon bond, consult with your
tax advisor). Whichever college-savings
vehicles you choose, try to put them to
work as early as you can. Before you
know it, todays first-graders will be
tomorrows college freshmen.

The movements common to belly dancing,
"solo, improvised dances based on torso
articulation" originated in the Middle East.
The term "belly dancing" is credited to Sol
Bloom, entertainment director of the 1893
World's Fair in Chicago. World Belly Dance
Day began in 2007. Held on the second
Saturday in May, the intent of World Belly
Dance Day is to promote belly dance as a
proper art form and to dispel notions sur-
rounding it. In addition to celebrating belly
dance, events held throughout the world on
Saturday, May 11 raised funds for local chari-
ties.
Shimmy Mobs, a flash mob of belly danc-
ing, were held in multiple cities, including
Atlanta and Detroit. Battle Creek and
Chicago. The first shimmy mob was held
May 1, 2011 in 30 cities. The number of
cities participating has grown every year to
increase awareness of belly dancing and to
raise funds for domestic abuse victims shel-
ters.
Unlike other forms of dance, such as ball-
room or tap, belly dancing has not been rec-
ognized for the artistry and physicality
required to correctly and completely per-
form the movements and communicate with
your fellow dancers. American Tribal Style
(ATS) Belly Dance is a group improvisational
style dance. Inspired by dances of the
Middle East, North Africa, Spain and India,
ATS uses a vocabulary of
movements and cues to
allow the dancers to com-
municate with each other
while dancing, to anticipate
next moves. Dancers move
as if choreographed, but
without choreography,
through a "call and answer"
format, moving together, yet
improvisational.
Alex, one of the performers at the World
Belly Day event I attended, started belly
dancing on her own while still in high
school. She would dance around her bed-
room, chiming homemade zils (finger cym-
bals). She started taking classes in February
2008, mostly ATS. She began student teach-
ing in May 2009. When the lead instructor
left, Alex assumed all of her classes. She
teaches mainly Improvisational Tribal Style
(ITS). While based in ATS, she has built
many original steps for it and changed the
classic formations and costuming. She also
created her own style - Bollywood Fusion
Improvisation. She teaches three classes per
week, plus workshops and training for stage
presence and costuming/makeup.
Belly dancing is for people of all shapes
and sizes, both men and women. Not only is
it artistic and beautiful to watch, belly danc-
ing is good exercise, both physical and emo-
tional. Holding certain poses, called "power
poses" for two minutes can raise testos-
terone and lower cortisol, resulting in
increased confidence and lower stress. In
addition, according to Alex, exposure to
other people's bodies, especially the belly,
helps you understand that "your body isn't
bizarre or malformed or ugly, it's just a body.
The calorie burn can range from 270 to 360
per hour, depending on the speed and inten-
sity of the movements. Try belly dancing to
add diversity to your workout!
Otsego County United Ways Volunteer Center works to
promote and connect people with volunteer opportunities in
our community. In an effort to promote volunteerism and
civic engagement, the Volunteer Center recognizes those stu-
dents who have shown outstanding dedication to their com-
munities by awarding them the Michigan Student Service
Award.
Students involved in the Michigan Student Service pro-
gram over four years will complete and document 400 hours
of non-paid community service that meet a recognized com-
munity need, under the auspices of a nonprofit organization,
government program, community group or school. Here in
Otsego County four students are being recognized.
Students being honored for distinguished service in the
Otsego area by the Volunteer Center are:
Taylor Rabineau - Gaylord High School
Abby Kassuba - Gaylord High School
Amy Kassuba - Gaylord High School
Andrea Birkhofer - Gaylord High School
These students will be awarded a medallion and a certifi-
cate of distinction signed by Governor Rick Snyder during
scholarship night May 22nd held at Gaylord Public Schools.
One worthy recipient will be awarded a $500 scholarship by
the Otsego County United Way Volunteer Center.

Award, contact the Volunteer Center at 989-705-8584 or

ples planning to exchange wedding vows,
states Cindy Akans, event coordinator.
Planning and exploring ideas for a wedding
is a fun experience, and often the more
lead-time a couple allows will maximize
their options for their big day. Boyne is a
beautiful venue for this show, drawing a wide
array of vendors from across northern
Michigan specializing in creating the perfect
wedding event. These vendors are excited to
meet brides and grooms-to-be, and to help
them plan and coordinate their wedding day
visions.
There will be a host of wedding-related
vendors that will include caterers, wedding
gown boutiques, photographers, wedding
planners, wedding cake designers, DJs and
facilities available for holding a wedding
and/or reception. Activities will also include
a live bridal fashion show that has been a
hallmark of the afternoon during previous
expos.
Cindy Akans states, Bride and groom
fashion models will present a wide assort-
ment of gowns, tuxedos and accessories.
This is always a highlight of the show.
The Expo will also feature a cash bar, com-
plimentary light beverages, food samples
and several area DJs who will provide back-
ground music during the event. There will
also be several door prizes and give-aways
during the afternoon.
Akans notes; This expo is guaranteed to
not only be an exciting afternoon, it will
serve as an incredible informational resource
for anyone planning an upcoming wedding.
The 2013 Northern Michigan Wedding
Expo is free to attend, though advance regis-
tration is encouraged. Attendees can also
register at the door, or save time by pre-reg-
istering on-line at www.WeeklyChoice.com
or www.CharlevoixCountyNews.com.
The 2013 Northern Michigan Bridal Expo
is sponsored by Boyne Resort, Weekly Choice
newspaper, and the Charlevoix County
News. For more information, please contact
Cindy Akans at (989) 858-3910 or email

TERRIFIC KIDS
All kids are terrific and here at South Maple Elementary, North Ohio Elementary and St. Mary Cathedral School, we are acknowledging kids for good character. The Kiwanis club of Otsego County is helping us with this
endeavor. Students who exhibit good behavior by following our school rules will be recognized by staff for doing so. One student per class will be selected to receive a Terrific Kid award, button, and pencil. The student
names will be announced on our morning announcements. They will also have their picture taken to hang on our Terrific Kid bulletin board. This is an excellent opportunity for staff, students, parents and the com-
munity to connect on a social/emotional level because good character is just as important as good grades!

Gaylord Community Productions, Inc. (GCP) is hoping to
score a bulls-eye with its summer Broadway musical: Annie
Get Your Gun. Adult (age 15 and above) auditions will be
held this Sunday (May 19th) from 4 to 6 pm and Monday
(May 20th) from 6 to 8 pm at the CrossPoint Church, located
at 1499 M-32 East in Gaylord.
The idea of doing a musical based on the life of sharp-
shooter Annie Oakley (Americas first female superstar from
the late 1800s) originated in 1940. Famed team Rodgers and
Hammerstein were a part of the original group of lyricist and
music writers for this show. However, they needed a person
to write the score and the best choice was Irving Berlin. And,
the rest is history. The songs written for the show have
endured and are readily recognizable: Theres No Business
Like Show Business, Anything You Can Do, You Cant Get
A Man With A Gun, and others. Berlin came up with most of
the songs in one weekend.
The show was revised in 1999, a revamping of sorts when it
returned to Broadway with great success. As successful as the
original version was it was insensitive to certain groups. That
was not the fault of anybody, but it had to be dealt with.
GCP president Tracy Dexter said, I am proud that GCP is
bringing to Gaylord this popular show without losing all the
fun of the original.
Director for the show Dan Brown is a veteran actor that
has experienced all phases of theatre. A Gaylord resident,
Brown states, The Annie Get Your Gun musical is a musical
for the ages, and one of Broadways enduring triumphs.
For additional information, contact Sandy Glasby at (231)
546-3889.
Each year Gaylord Community Productions, Inc. (GCP)
awards scholarships to those area residents that meet the
criteria for advancing their theatre interests. Some that have
received the award have gone on to professional careers.
When the local amateur theatre group was incorporated, in
addition to their mission statement of providing live theatre
entertainment, they made a commitment to award scholar-
ships. GCP matches a $500.00 scholarship that is sponsored
by the Gaylord Rotary Club. President Tracy Dexter is grateful
the Rotary supports GCP and agrees that the theatre fine arts
are a necessity for our community.
Dexter announced the 2013 recipients after the Board of
Directors evaluated the applications. The final vote was cast
for the following recipients:
Rebecca Latka: $500.00 Rotary Club of Gaylord award;
Ashley Ann Switalski: $250.00; Madison Sharpe: $250.00.
Dexter added, We were pleased with the number of appli-
cations and are especially encouraged that all winners are
pursuing advanced involvement in the performing fine arts.
Everyone is welcome at this meeting on May 21 at BJs
Restaurant. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. and everyone is encour-
aged to meet, eat and socialize before our speakers presen-
tations. The buffet is $8.29 and includes great food and great
company.
Speakers at the meeting include:
Jackie Pierce, Chair, Michigan Democratic Party 1st
Congressional District Progressive Caucus
John C. Austin, President, Michigan State Board of
Education
Vicki Barnett, Michigan State House Representative, 37th
District
As chair of the 1st District Progressive Caucus, Jackie
Pierce will present the caucuses 2014 election cycle agenda.
As chair of the elected State Board of Education, John C.
Austin will discuss K-12 events unfolding in Lansing. 37th
District State Rep. Vicki Barnett will discuss pending legisla-
tion in Lansing and has been asked to comment on bills
sponsored by our 105th District representative, (R) Greg
MacMaster.
Both Vicki Barnett and John C. Austin have been encour-
aged to run for governor and it will be interesting to hear
their thoughts on this 2014 race. Proposed K-12 bills are
numerous and controversial, and it will be interesting to hear
John C. Austins thoughts regarding the impact of various
proposals on K-12 education. Otsego County Democrats
havent heard from the
Progressive Caucus before and
it will also be interesting to
hear what Jackie Pierce has to
say about this groups agenda.

Daily Word
THURSDAY: Romans 12:3 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 3 For through the grace given to me I say to
everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as
to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.
FRIDAY: Philippians 2:19-22 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 19 But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send
Timothy to you shortly, so that I also may be encouraged when I learn of your condition. 20 For I
have no one else of kindred spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare. 21 For they all
seek after their own interests, not those of Christ Jesus. 22 But you know of his proven worth, that
he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel like a child serving his father.
SATURDAY: Ephesians 4:11-14 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 11 And He gave some as apostles, and
some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping
of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain
to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure
of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. 14 As a result, we are no longer to be chil-
dren, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery
of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;
SUNDAY: 1 Samuel 26:23-25 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 23 The Lord will repay each man for his
righteousness and his faithfulness; for the Lord delivered you into my hand today, but I refused to
stretch out my hand against the Lords anointed. 24 Now behold, as your life was highly valued in
my sight this day, so may my life be highly valued in the sight of the Lord, and may He deliver me
from all distress. 25 Then Saul said to David, Blessed are you, my son David; you will both
accomplish much and surely prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.
MONDAY: Philippians 4:11-14 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 11 Not that I speak from want, for I have
learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. 12 I know how to get along with humble
means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned
the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. 13 I can
do all things through Him who strengthens me. 14 Nevertheless, you have done well to share with
me in my affliction.
TUESDAY: James 1:9-12 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 9 But the brother of humble circumstances is
to glory in his high position; 10 and the rich man is to glory in his humiliation, because like flower-
ing grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with a scorching wind and withers the grass; and
its flower falls off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in the midst of
his pursuits will fade away. 12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been
approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
WEDNESDAY: 1 Timothy 6:3-7 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 3 If anyone advocates a different doc-
trine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine
conforming to godliness, 4 he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in
controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive lan-
guage, evil suspicions, 5 and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the
truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. 6 But godliness actually is a means of great
gain when accompanied by contentment. 7 For we have brought nothing into the world, so we can-
not take anything out of it either.

Sales Manager for Crick Tool
This morning I woke, froma deep slumber, at my normal time of 3:45 a. m., but unlike the dawn of most
mornings, which are fuzzy and cluttered with the cravings of coffee, I awoke in prayer, clear headed and crisp. I
seemed to be travailing, during this prayer, for a man who has become a good friend to me. Now, wading into the
deep water of prayer has become a prelude to my workout which is the reason I get up so early. I cant think of a
better way to warmup, and the duration of time that it takes for my rolling tabernacle to arrive at the gymis
around fifteen minutes. During which I usually lift up a list of people and events that Holy Spirit brings to my
mind to pray for, but this morning the Spirit just held me in prayer for my friend. I prayed in celebration of our
friendship, his mentorship of me, the laughter we share when we are together and lots of other things. At the con-
clusion of my prayer I made the following request, Father I ask that today you give my friend the best day of his
life. Now sometimes I sense an answer and sometimes I dont, but today I did and I must say it caught me off
guard. The answer I sensed was How do you measure the best day of your life? I did not receive this as a rebuke
but a gentle check for me.
Upon reflection of this answer, I came to realize that, due to the fact I exist in the flesh, I often use
fleshly/worldly standards to measure the value of who I amor the success of my walk. Unfortunately this way of
thinking can morph into the way I measure my relationship with my wife, my kids, my friends, even Father.
The world would have a man measure himself by how much he makes, how many toys he has, how many
degrees he has, did he contribute to the gross national product, etc. and failure to achieve the above will follow
himfor the rest of his life. But how does Father measure a man? Anybody read Jeremiah lately?
Jeremiah 9: 23-24 states Thus says the Lord, let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, and let not the mighty
man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let himwho boasts boast of this, that he under-
stands and knows me
It has become a generational curse that a man should measure his worth by what he has or does instead of
how gentle he is with his wife and children or how valiantly he barricades his home fromthe floods of pollution
that satan wants to pour in, with the hope that he can keep the generational curses going. If we as men boot
strap our way through life it will spill onto our children and cause themto do the same. The dependence on
Fathers measure is and must continue to be our defining cadence.
Enumerable stay at home moms measure themselves as just a stay at home mom? WHAT A LIE! My wife
has an education fromone of the best colleges in the USA, and I would say without equivocation that she is
smarter, in many areas, than I am, but she decided to take the high road and stay home with my children! That,
my friends, is humility and guts! She is not just a stay at home momand educator of my children she is a
PRINCESS! Our children become who they are because she shares with themwhere they have come from.
How about the poor overworked minister? Churches often measure themby how many converts have been
logged, the fire in his sermon and how many people he goes to visit. While those things are good, I believe Father
measures ministry one person at a time. Ponder this question; If you only reached one person for the Lord, in
your lifetime would that make you less of a minister than one who reaches thousands? I think not. Let me bring
this closer to home. If my life was the only life that my friend had ministered to then I would like to think that
Father would measure his life with a resounding WELL DONE! Do you remember the one person that Holy Spirit
hastened to minister to you? How did you measure his life? Was your salvation worth it?
I started this little collage of thoughts with a question Father asked me. How do you measure the best day of
your life? Imnot sure I solidified one answer, just yet, but if I can lay my head down at night and know that I pur-
sued Fathers favor by Living FREE and using that FREEDOMas worship to Himthen I believe my day would finish
with the gentle whisper of WELL DONE!
My challenge to you is to push back fromyour computer for a couple of minutes and ask yourself, How have I
been measuring myself? If you are feeling the weight of killer expectations, you probably need to check your
yoke. If by Fathers grace and love then rest in His gentle whisper to you of WELL DONE!

Some area business professionals are walking around
a bit lighter these days because they participated in a
weight-loss competition hosted by Blue Cross Blue
Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) and the Health Care Task
Force, a committee of the Petoskey Regional and
Harbor Springs Area Chambers of Commerce. Thirty
teams from the area participated in the competition
and collectively lost 2,919 pounds.
Officials from BCBSM and the Petoskey chamber vis-
ited the regions winning team on Friday, Michigan
Heart & Vascular Specialists of McLaren Northern
Michigan. Nine people from their office participated in
the competition and together they lost 124-pounds for
a weight-loss percentage of 6.87%. That was good
enough for first-place in northern Michigan and sec-
ond-place overall in the state. Each member of the win-
ning team received a $50 gift card from Boyne Resorts, a
local sponsor of the competition. The business will also
be offered a free sponsorship at an upcoming Business
After Hours hosted by the Petoskey Regional Chamber
of Commerce.
Team members with Michigan Heart & Vascular
Specialists credit healthier eating and increased exer-
cise for their weight-loss success. A couple of team
members credited apps on their smart phones as good
motivators and guides as well.X
Members of winning team included: Michelle
Watson, Laura Medsker, Teresa Eberly, Sara Petrowski,
Ashley Westover, Sandy ONeill, Krista Cook, Sarah
Herron, and Melanie
Bingham.
The statewide competi-
tion ran from February
25th through April 26th.
This is the second straight
year that the chambers
Health Care Task Force
created a local competi-
tion within the statewide
competition. Last year
only ten teams from the
region participated and
that number jumped to 30
in 2013. Helping to boost
that number were 13 dif-
ferent teams from
McLaren Northern
Michigan.
Blue Cross is delighted
to have so much partici-
pation from northern
Michigan, said Donna
Ludwig of BCBSM. She
says teams from this
region comprised 29% of
all participating teams in
the state. The incentive
of the Boyne gift cards and
the promotion by the local chambers really created
some excitement for the competition, Ludwig added.
Finishing second locally was the team from Circuit
Controls Corporation at 6.27% followed by McLaren
Northern Michigan Cheboygan Campus Radiology at
5.95%. Rounding out the top ten were: Northern Lakes
Economic Alliance, Bearcub Outfitters, Wii Not Fit
McLaren Northern Michigan, Preston Feather Building
Centers, McLaren Northern Michigan Chunky
Monkeys, Internal Medicine of Northern Michigan, and
McLaren Northern Michigan Cheboygan Campus.
Although not among the highest percentages, the
northern Michigan team with the biggest weight loss
was the team from the Odawa Casino which lost 459-
pounds.

The Petoskey Youth Soccer Association
(PYSA) is sending a strong message to the
community, and to anyone using its Click
Road Soccer Complex, that tobacco use is
seriously detrimental to the public health. At
its most recent meeting, the PYSA Board
voted to institute tobacco-free policies at the
complex that will complement the 24/7
tobacco-free policies adopted last August by
Petoskey Schools.
"Our goal is to demonstrate to our youth
that tobacco use is not part of a healthy
lifestyle," said Tricia Lamberti, PYSA
Executive Director. "We believe that this poli-
cy can play a part in reducing youth tobacco
use in our community, which will eventually
save lives."
According to Susan Pulaski, Community
Health Coordinator for the Health
Department of Northwest Michigan, nearly
90 percent of "new" smokers begin smoking
before age 18.
"By adopting this policy, PYSA is affirming
that tobacco use and secondhand smoke
don't belong in park areas, where people go
to improve their fitness and enjoy nature,"
Pulaski said. She noted that PYSA's policy will
reinforce the recently-adopted 24/7 tobacco-
free school policies, and contribute to a
tobacco-free environment throughout the
community.
P u l a s k i
added that
the Health
Department
is looking
forward to
h e l p i n g
other agen-
cies and
o r g a n i z a -
tions insti-
tute tobacco-free policies throughout Antrim,
Charlevoix, Emmet and Otsego Counties. For
more information about tobacco-free parks
and beaches, contact Pulaski at (231) 347-
5813.
The Health Department of Northwest
Michigan is mandated by the Michigan
Public Health Code to promote wellness, pre-
vent disease, provide quality healthcare,
address health problems of vulnerable popu-
lations, and protect the environment for the
residents and visitors of Antrim, Charlevoix,
Emmet, and Otsego counties. For more infor-
mation, visit www.nwhealth.org or call (800)

Petoskey Youth Soccer complex promotes
tobacco-free community
By Jim Akans
There are two fun and exciting fundraising
events coming up right up for the Little
Traverse Bay Humane Society (LTBHS). The
first is the Grateful Dog Off-Road 5k and 10k
walk/run taking place at Nubs Nob in Harbor
Springs on Saturday, May 18th, and on a more
relaxed note there will be a Wine & Dine for
Canines & Felines fundraiser held at
Mackinaw Trails Winery in downtown Petoskey
on May 23rd.
The Grateful Dog Off-Road is a wonderful
way for the entire family to enjoy some outdoor
exercise while helping to raise money for the
LTBHS. Participants have their choice of a 5K
or 10K route, and can test their stamina by run-
ning the course or simply enjoy the scenery

tration fee for this event is $40, which includes
an event t-shirt and lunch, and participants are

sponsorship donations. Registration is at 9:30
am on May 18th at Nubs Nob, and there will be
a shotgun start at 10 am.
On Thursday, May 23rd, the Mackinaw Trail
Winery and Fustinis Oils and
Vinegars will be hosting a
fundraiser for the Little
Traverse Bay Humane
Society. The event takes
place from 5-7 p.m. on
Thursday, May 23, at
Mackinaw Trail Winery,
which is located at 200
Howard Street in
Petoskeys Gaslight
District. Guests will
enjoy a sampling of
Fustinis unique oils and vine-
gars, three special Mackinaw Trail
Winery wine tastings for just $25 in advance
($30 at the door) and music by
the extraordinary Pete Kehoe.
Five additional tastings can be
purchased for just $5.
For every bottle of wine pur-
chased during the event,
Mackinaw Trail Winery will
donate $1 to Little Traverse Bay
Humane Society with the
exception of sale items.
Mackinaw Trail Winery and
Fustinis Oils and Vinegars will
generously donate 100% of the
proceeds from this event to
help the homeless animals at Little Traverse
Bay Humane Society so mark your calendar
and bring your friends. The more money
raised, the more lives we can save!
Marci Singer, associate director for LTBHS,
states, We are hoping to raise $15,000 at the
Grateful Dog event this year, and $5,000 at the
Wine and Dine event. The Little Traverse Bay
Humane Society is 100-percent funded through
donations, grants and fundraising events such
as this. We take in and process over 500 ani-
mals each year, and they are all spayed or
neutered, fully vaccinated and have an identifi-
cation micro-chip before they are adopted. For
healthier animals, the individual cost is about
$450 from the time they come in our door to
when they are adopted. For those with special
medical needs the cost can be up to $1000 per
animal.
She adds, We are a no-kill shelter and are
dedicated to rescuing as many animals as pos-
sible. We offer spay and neutering programs
and are able to offer less costly services due to
generosity of our donors. We also have an
innovative Pit Stop program, the only one of it
kind in Michigan, and it offers owners of pit
bulls spay and neutering for free, as well as
rabies vaccinations and micro chip.

& Dine event, call Teresa Chaney at
