We dedicate this book to those who are truly hungry and thirsty to live in the realm of the super natural, and to those who have already tasted of the heavenly realm. We dedicate this to the bride of Christ, those who are called to go deeper, higher, and farther than they have yet experienced. It is only by the grace that comes by FAITH in CHRIST that we will be able to accomplish His will on this earth.

Introduction

This book is about a Man Mighty in prayer. This book is also filled with truths and insight into others who have paid the price to bring about mighty and great moves of God. When we are referring to prayer we are not referring to some type of religious ceremony. It is divine intimate fellowship with the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. It is that invisible umbilical cord connected to God. It is God supernaturally transfers into our hearts the overwhelming burden He has for those who do not know Him.. What is it that we pray? We pray the known will and purposes Of the Father! We pray the word of God, within biblical context.

GOD Said: You Better Not Lie or You'll Die!

One day (1980) I picked up a book by a well-known author. This book had come highly recommended by one of my favorite preachers at that time. The topic was about angelic visitations. This was something I was interested in, because of my many experiences with the supernatural. I began to read this book and noticed immediately that there were experiences he said he had which did not seem to line up with the Scriptures. I did not want to judge his heart, but we do have the responsibility to examine everything in light of God’s Word. If it does not line up with the word of God, then we must reject it, no matter who wrote it.

As I was pondering the stories in this book, the Spirit of the Lord spoke to my heart very strongly. It was as if He was standing right there next to me, speaking audibly. What He spoke to me was rather shocking! The Lord told me that the writer of this book would be dead in three months from a heart attack. I asked the Lord why He was telling me this. He said the stories in the man’s book were exaggerated, and judgment was coming. The Lord warned me that day that if I were ever to do the same thing, judgment would come to me. I did not realize that the Lord would have me to be writing books, many them filled with my own personal experiences. Now I know why he spoke this to me, telling me that I better not exaggerate my experiences.

When the Spirit of the Lord spoke this to me, I turned and told my wife. I held the book up and said, in a very quiet whispering, trembling, wavering voice, Honey, the man who wrote this book will be dead in three months from a heart attack. Plus, I told her why the Lord told me this. I wish I had been wrong. Exactly 3 months later, the man died from a heart attack. No, God did not kill him, he opened the door for the devil. God can speak to us through the positive and the negative circumstances of life. We better take heed to what he is saying.

They pull down the demonic powers By the Authority of Christ in order for multitudes to be delivered from the powers of darkness. Such a Spiritual Warrior was Father Nash. He went before the famous Charles Finney in Mighty Prevailing Prayer during the Second Great Awakening. Finney in his writings literally attributes most of his success to the prayers of father Nash, and those like him.

Daniel Nash himself never wrote a book about his life. All of this information has been gleaned from periodicals, personal acquaintances, and other resources that I was able to find through research in order to put together this particular important book.

Within this book you also discover the importance of why we pray. There will be some quotes and experiences from men and women who have been used of God mightily in the realm of intercession and prayer. I have acknowledge where the information came from to the best of my ability. When the initials mhy appears within the writings, this simply indicates something that I have added.

INTERCESSION

in-ter-sesh'-un (pagha`, to make intercession; originally to strike upon, or against; then in a good sense, to assail anyone with petitions, to urge, on behalf of another, to intercede (Ruth 1:16; Jeremiah 7:16; 27:18; Job 21:15; Genesis 23:8; Isaiah 53:12; Jeremiah 36:25).

New Testament intercession. The English word is derived from Latin intercedo, to come between, which has the meaning of obstruct and to interpose on behalf of a person, and finally to intercede. In the Greek New Testament we find the word in 1 Timothy 2:1; 4:5; entugchano, is also found in Romans 8:26-34):

Once, not long ago, on a dark, rainy day, I made my way over wet ground to a very special place. A chill made me tremble as the cold rain pelted my skin, drenching me to the bone. But still I walked, eager to get to my destination—the very place where Father Daniel Nash’s church once stood.

Though his name may be unfamiliar to most, he was born in 1775 and, at age forty, he began to minister for six years as a preacher in upstate New York, where he saw great revival twice during that short period of time. It’s said that he didn’t trust in his own spoken words or cleverly-written sermons to change the hearts of listeners but knew that only prevailing prayer would summon the presence of the Holy Spirit to transform the culture of the day.

Unfortunately, at age forty-three, he was voted out of his church, by a vote of nine to three, because they were annoyed by his frequent travels to preach, and they let him go in favor of a younger man. But with a humble heart he continued to serve the people there, filling the pulpit when needed and seeing many people saved because of his fervent, prevailing prayer. It was noted that he was much damaged with pain by how he was treated and had little hope of doing much for the kingdom after, but God had a greater plan!

A few years later

God laid on Daniel Nash’s heart the need for a Forerunner, to intercede before and during the revival meetings held by Evangelist Charles Finney. In fact, he would often go several days before the beginning of a revival’ (it has been reported he would sometimes go ahead of Finney up to two weeks to pray for the meetings - mhy )

He would locate an out-of-the-way tiny, dark, damp space to rent. Find two or three likeminded individuals, and begin to fast and pray, groaning in the spirit for hours and days at a time. It’s said that a holy light lit the dim space, making it a powerful place to intercede and believe God would move as never before.

A monument erected in the memory of Father Nash

A monument of his image and name stands on the front step (this foundational rock of the steps still sits) of where his church once stood, and today that parcel of land, owned by Dwelling Place Ministries of Lowville, NY has been set aside with great expectations for a future powerful revival move of God. (In fact, on that rainy day I mentioned above, I had a wonderful time ministering in that amazing church.)

Afterward, we drove a few miles to visit a neglected cemetery tucked away in the same village, called Stowe Square Cemetery, located in Lewis County, New York, not far from the Canadian border. As I visited the grave site of father Nash I stood fighting the wind and rain with my umbrella but felt a powerful anointing as I read the faded wording on his tombstone:

Mighty in Prayer

Wow! What an epitaph to sum up his life! It was said that Daniel Nash was mighty in prayer and he truly was, so much so that we might even dare to emulate such things in our day. Could we pay such a price for revival?

That weekend was filled with meetings and a strong manifestation of His presence. I was honored to visit that place and felt I was there by divine appointment. It was as if God had something to share with me, especially when He said, Like the rain you now feel upon your skin so Daniel Nash was wet with tears from deep groaning and intercession. It’s been said that Daniel Nash prayed so hard his nose began to bleed, and he would be wet with perspiration even during the dark, cold New York winters. He was physically exhausted when he went to bed. He prayed as he shook the heavens with fervent prayer.

Daniel Nash: MIGHTY IN PRAYER

During the day in which he lived not many people knew his name, while others paid little attention to him, but God knew his name. Daniel Nash was a man of God and a man of rare humility. The devil also knew his name and trembled every time he entered the room.

Because of prayer he carried a mighty power and authority while aflame with a burning love for Christ.

Daniel Nash began his ministry as a preacher in upstate New York. He saw revival twice in his pastorate and was a key figure in one of the greatest revivals in the history of the United States.

Finney put it this way:

"When I got to town to start a revival a lady contacted me who ran a boarding house. She said, ‘Brother Finney, do you know a Father Nash? He and two other men have been at my boarding house for the last three days, but they haven't eaten a bite of food.

I opened the door and peeped in at them because I could hear them groaning, and I saw them down on their faces. They have been this way for three days, lying prostrate on the floor and groaning. I thought something awful must have happened to them. I was afraid to go in and I didn’t know what to do. Would you please come see about them?’

‘No it isn't necessary,’ I replied. ‘They just have a spirit of travail in prayer.’

Someone asked Finney what kind of man Father Nash was. We never see him. He doesn’t enter into any of the meetings. Finney replied, Like anybody who does a lot of praying, Father Nash is a very quiet person. Show me a person who is always talking, and I'll show you a Christian who never does much praying.

Prevailing in Prayer

In the article DANIEL NASH: PREVAILING PRINCE OF PRAYER by J Paul Reno it states:

"Though he prayed in private, yet he often prayed with such fervency that others became aware of his praying. This was not intended, but simply was the release of a deeply burdened soul. The lady at the boarding house became aware of his groans as he prayed. His enemies claimed, ‘that it was impossible for him to pray in secret since, whether he went into his closet or the woods, he prayed with such vehemence that he could be heard half a mile away.’ While this was likely an exaggeration of his normal practice, there is a record of a single occurrence of note:

In the revival at Gouverneur (in which the great majority of the inhabitants, Finney believed, were converted), Nash rose very early and went into a forest to pray. ‘It was one of those clear mornings,' said Finney, 'on which it is possible to hear sounds at a great distance.’ Nearly a mile away lived an unsaved man who suddenly heard Nash’s voice raised in prayer, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t shake the reality of his urgent need for a Savior. In fact, he experienced no relief until he found it in Christ.

Lord, YOU are no respecter of persons... What you have done in the heart of Father Nash you can do in me! Give us a heart to pray for revival! Let me spend time birthing the next great awakening while there’s still time.

What is fervent prayer?

It means being on fire for the Lord and having fire in your belly. It does NOT mean a rambling of half-hearted platitudes recited before dinner or a daily recitation of the ills of daily living. The truth is that kind of emotion cannot be faked; it cannot be manufactured. It’s real and it’s stunning in its intensity. THAT’S what it means to be on fire for God. And it comes from love for God and deep compassion for the lost— a true, deep love that’s all encompassing. And that can’t be manufactured either.

There are men throughout history like Father Nash who have lived that kind of all- consuming passion for the Lord and for their neighbors, brothers and sisters. Men and women who, simply because of their intense love for the Lord, became amazing examples of the power of fervent prayer.

FATHER DANIEL NASH

THE saintly life and strange personal charm of the Rev. Daniel Nash, the first rector of Christ Church, made a deep impression upon the village of Cooperstown in its early days ; and the wide range of his apostolic labors as a missionary gave him a singular fame, during half a century, throughout Otsego county, and far beyond its borders. The grave of Father Nash is in Christ churchyard, marked by the tallest of the monuments along the driveway, at a spot which he himself had chosen for his burial.

Daniel Nash was born in Massachusetts at Great Barrington (then called Housatonic) May 28, 1763.° At the age of twenty-two years he was graduated at Yale in the same class with Noah Webster. He was originally Presbyterian in his doctrinal belief, and in polity was sympathetic with the Congregational denomination, of which he was a member. But within ten years after his graduation from college Daniel Nash became a communicant of the Episcopal

Church and began to study for Holy Orders. It was one of the quaint sayings attributed to him in later years that you may bray a Presbyterian as with a pestle in a mortar, and you cannot get all of his Presbyterianism out of him, and when asked how he accounted for his own experience, I was caught young, he would reply.

Through the influence of the Rev. Dr. Daniel Burhan’s, who had made several missionary tours through Otsego and adjoining counties, Nash became fired with zeal for missionary work in this romantic and adventurous field.

In 1797, having taken deacon’s orders, he was accompanied to Otsego by his bride of a little more than a year, who was Olive Lusk, described as an amiable lady of benignant mind and placid manners, the daughter of an intimate friend of his father. They made their first home at Exeter, in Otsego, and the early ministerial acts of Daniel Nash were divided between Exeter and Morris, about eighteen miles distant.

The missionary zeal of Daniel Nash was so intense that he was unable to comprehend Luke warmness in such a cause. The first bishop of the diocese of New York, the Rt. Rev. Samuel Provoost belonged to a type of ecclesiastical life that was characteristic of the century then closing. Orthodox, scholarly, not ungenuinely religious, a gentleman of lofty aims and distinguished manners, Bishop Provoost charmingly entertained at his New York residence the rugged missionary of Otsego who came to report to him, but he was quite unable to enter into a missionary enthusiasm that appeared to him fanatical, or to understand the character of an educated man who lived by choice among the people of rude settlements and untamed forests.

Nash was so indignant at the attitude of his chief that he resolved not to receive from his hands the ordination to the priesthood, and it was not until the autumn of 1801, shortly after the consecration of the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Moore as coadjutor bishop of New York, that he became a priest.

As the result of tireless labor, of much travel through difficult regions, by the maintenance of divine services at many outposts, Father Nash was able little by little to establish self-supporting church organizations throughout Otsego and the neighboring region. In 1801 Zion Church was built at Morris.

Eight years later Father Nash organized St. Matthew’s parish at Unadilla, and in 1811 completed the formal organization of Christ Church parish in Cooperstown, where the church building had been erected in 1807-10, and where Father Nash now came to be in partial residence as rector during seven years.

Aside from these parishes which so soon became permanently established this extraordinary man was regularly or occasionally visiting and shepherding the people of many other settlements. In Otsego county, besides giving pastoral attention to Exeter, Morris, Unadilla, and Cooperstown, he held services and preached to name them in the order of his first visits in Richfield, Springfield, and Cherry Valley ; Westford and Milford ; Edmeston, Burling- ton, and Hartwicli ; Fly Creek and Burlington Flats ; Laurens, LeRoy (now Schuyler’s Lake) , Hartwick Hill, and Worcester ; New Lisbon
