(ESP) Overview For this seminar, students will play the role of an engineering consulting team assembled to advise the newly appointed Premier of Ontario played by the seminar leader on implementing his campaign promise of developing a provincial green building standard based around the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification framework. The Premier has pledged that all new construction in Ontario will achieve LEED Gold certification starting in 2015. The engineering consulting team will be asked to present a suite of best practices that will help builders meet this standard, while paying close attention to the concerns of political interest groups, especially building owners and property developers. All seminar meetings will take the form of advisory committee meetings, and student presentations will take the form of topical briefings to the committee. Preparation for 1 Seminar Read the readings listed above and follow the Discussion Guidelines for Seminars in the ESP Course Package. Be prepared to discuss some of the following issues: basic elements of green buildings criticisms of green buildings vested interests in property development and building ownership Preparation for 2 Seminar Be prepared to discuss some of the following issues: sustainable sites best practices water efficiency best practices vested interests in both Preparation for 3 Seminar Be prepared to discuss some of the following issues: building energy consumption building materials vested interests in both Oral Presentations Each student is required to do a 2 to 4-minute oral presentation. A topic sign-up sheet will be nd rd provided at the first seminar session. Presentations will take place during the 2 and 3 seminars as briefings to the advisory committee. Briefings must be given as 4-slide PowerPoint presentations, with the first slide being a title/overview slide, followed by three slides of content. This is not an indication that little information is expected to be presented, it is an indication that relevant information is expected to be presented very succinctly. Students are expected to pay close attention to each others presentations and offer insightful comments and constructive criticism.
