TO All) WHM iT MAY CONCERN: `

Be it known Athat i, Lonrn'~ C. SPRINGER, `oi Chicago, in the county of Cools, and State of illinois, 'have invented a'new and .useful Electro-Magnetic Safe Loch; and i do hereby declare and make `Known `that the following
is a full, clear, and' exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters andgures marked thereon, which form part of this specification. My invention consists in unlocking or withdrawing the bolts .which securethe door of a safe, by openingl ` and closing an electro-magnetic circuit, and also by passing 'thev circuit by which said resnlt vis accomplished

through a. series ofmovable contiguousy points, so ~that byv displacing said' points, or any one of them, lthe
aforesaid circuit is broken. l My invention further vconsists in controlling` and movingl the said movable points

inthe aforesaid circuit, by open-ing, and closings; series of electro-'magnetic circuits arranged in connectionl
therewith, respectively, so that one familiar with the lock can readily adjust said points to complete the firsta
mentioned' probability, circuit, connect .so said thatcircuit, the bolts andmay therefore be withdrawn; cannot open While 'theone safe. not familiar with the loclc n cannot, ` by
' To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my invention, Will -proceed to

describe the same 'with particularity, making,` reference in soy doing to the aforesaid drawingauin which
Figure l represents a front elevation of a safe haring mysaid inventiop attached. l A

Figure 2, an interior elevation of the safe door, showing a plan yieW of my invention.; and

Figure 3 is a Vplan' or top View of the door, slightly ajar, disclosing the inode whereby the bolts of the lool;`
adjust themselves when the door is closed. 'l

Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parte of my invention. A lrepresents thedoer of the safe hinge_d'as shown,-to the safe in the usual manner. R E represent two bolts, which are connected by a spring, S, which drawrsaid bolts back from theirbeds in .or upon thegsafe, and unlock the safe Whenever'the block E* is withdrawn from between the adjacent ends of said bars, as hereihafter described. To lock the safefthe block? is adjusted, as shown, between the bolts` R, and the door 'closed-g, thei outer ends oi'- the bolts strike against the catches m, which> yield to the pressure until the bolts pass far enough
,

back to allow the springs o to throwVr said catches, which are arranged at the. top and bottom- aiihehehind said bolts, and thus secure the door. Any other suitable means may be employed to ~receive the ends of the

bolts, instead of the one above described: E E representan ordinary spool magnet, upon or over which is A arranged a lever, F,-p_roviddd -With an armature, F', arranged substantially asin telegraphicinstramerite, To

the opposite-end of the lever F isattached a hooker catch, marked M, which operates upon the toothed wheel J, as shot-cnv in iig; 'N representing a pawbto prevent the, said -wheel .l from moving back when the hcol: hl' is released, :is hereinafter set forth. B C D represent a series of similar magnet spools, having a'corresponding series 'oi leve1s,L, each operatingv upon a corresponding series of tothed Wheels, CT H i, inthe sameV manner _that
the leverh"> operated upon the Wheel d, ,as aforesaid. ' O represents erlernt, attached at one end to a suitable

crank device uponvsaid'rrlieel d and the other end to ablock, R'Which holds 'the bolts it in thesoclicts >or catches which secure -the door of the safe, as aforesaid. The Vend of said arm Gis suspended from a. swinging l1uugei,Q, to hold it in vplace when Withdrawn from between the said'bolt's, as hereinafter set forth. The wires passing around the magnet B pass out through the door of the safe, at the small apertures b 6', orrather, terminate in said apertures, .being .properly insulated, so that a circuit is completed around said magnet 'Bg by bringing v

the opposite poles of a battery, T, iii'contaet therewith, as shown in g. 1. The wires passing around lthel
I magnets G D E, marked, respectively', o d a, are similarly arranged with respect to the small apertures o. d a',

as showmso" that `circuits may be completed around the magnets by connecting the opposite poles of said
battery therewith, as aforesaid. It will be observed that a portion of the circuit a, through or around the

magnet E,'passes through arms, e f g L, attached, as shown, to the ivheels G H I, said part of the circuit lbeing properly insulated from said _Wheels and theirsupports and shafts, so that'when arranged in contact with points
upon the adjacent Wheels, the circuit is complete.;l but when one or more of'said wheels are moved from such`
position, the circuit a is broken at said pointspor some of them. . ' When the safe is to be locked, one or more ot' said wheels, GH I, is movedacertain distance, so as to

break the said cizjhguit c_mvlien the door is closed and is locked automatically. By observing how inr cach or either

of said ivlieeiss turne from' the positioh >in which selicloirouit e is oompleizecl, one moy re?lily know ,how :zo
readjuat the game in oid position, when desired 'to enlookit-he safe. '- rhis ieadjustment is effected by eppiying the .

poles oi' the battery to the ende ofthe Wires passing around the megnet _which oorreeponds with the wheel >to bemovd, which completes eeicl cirouimand the magnet drews own the correeponling lever L, and raises the` opposite end
of sui lever, the nook M reoivng the wheel one notoLf By~removing one or both poles of the battei'y, she oii'euit is broken, the magnetic attraction ceases, and the levee-is thrown to itvfoimer position by means of va,

spring which releases the hook M, iliie pewl N,`howe`ver, holding chey ,wheel in position. By 'completing seid
circuit again, the Wheel is revolveri another notch or space, and, by repeating the elosing and opening; of said

circuit, 'the Wheel is, 'reedjusted in the proper position,` asequirefi. H v`more thaii'o'ne wheel lied been displaioecl, e similar operation upon the ooifresponing magnet wllreajuet lit, and iiu's, theciiouit be made complete,
eo that by applying the poles of the battery, 'es_afore'seid, the lever` E operates' upon the Wheel J in 4the I manner above deseribed.. This revolution rof >'elle Wheel J'grevially wthliaws the bloeit? fremito 'position between the belts By, end when aid block is wllolly'withd'ewn, tlzespriegs withdraws the said lioltb and ~ imlocke `the safe. If desired, Athe wires~ of the several oirowiite meylal bebrbught outside of the safe,
through e single oiiioe; o'r, the mirious orifices may b'e meein diferen' parte of 'the door, instead of being '

arranged symmetrically, as lov'm. , A* series of any 'number of wheels, G H11, may be employed, the greater num'berhrendeirixig the probabilities oi' accidental afijuetiiient of' the circuit a proportionallyfless, and the number of teeth upon eeeli Wileel ,also decreasing suoli probabilities ;. and `the two features combined r'en?ierng 4suoli> > i
