Quarterly fund commentary as at 30 June 2011
Confronted with disappointing economic data and threats of a global double-dip recession, investors generally favored fixed income investments over riskier securities during the quarter. Within the euro zone, the European Central Bank (ECB) attempted to balance persistent sovereign-debt concerns and increasing inflationary pressures. Some short-term relief was delivered toward the end of the period as Greece was able to pass the first part of an austerity plan aimed at meeting European Union aid requirements and staving off default for the debt-laden nation. On the inflationary front, the ECB raised interest rates 25 basis points to 1.25% in April, marking the first increase since July 2008. The funds return for the quarter was in line with that of its benchmark, the Barclays Capital Global Inflation-Linked Eurozone Bond Index (+1.75%). Yields fell along the euro area yield curve, with the most dramatic shift occurring in the intermediate area. The yield of the 10-year euro area bond dropped 33 basis points to 3.02%, the yield of the 2-year euro area bond fell 20 basis points to 1.58% and the yield of the 30-year euro area bond inched down 4 basis points to 3.76%. For the 12 months ended 30 June, the fund tracked the benchmark (+2.74) closely. All returns are based in euro.
