Appreciation

First and foremost, I would like to thank God for providing me with strength and health to do this work. I would also like to thank my parents for providing me with money to buy anything regarding this project work and their valuable advice. They also encouraged me whilst doing this project so that I would complete it on time. I would like to thank Puan Redzwana binti Abdullah, my dedicated Additional Mathematics teacher for her guidance. She taught me and my friends with great patience to complete the project work. Last but not least, I would like to thank my friends who have assisted me in completing this task. They were very helpful when we discussed this project together.

Objectives The aims of carrying out this project work are:

a) To apply and adapt a variety of problem-solving strategies to solve problems b) To improve thinking skills c) To promote effective mathematical communication d) To develop mathematical knowledge through problem solving in a way that increases students interest and confidence e) To use the language of mathematics to express mathematical ideas precisely f) To provide a learning environment that stimulates and enhances effective learning g) To develop positive attitude towards additional mathematics

Introduction

The human pulse is defined as the heart rate or the number of times the heart beats in a minute. Pulse rate varies from person to person. When the pulse is lower, the person is at rest. The pulse rate increases when the person exercises. More oxygen-rich blood is needed by the body when the people exercise. Knowing how to take the pulse rate can help us to evaluate the exercise program. A normal heart rate at rest is 70-100 beats per minute for children and 60-100 beats per minute for adults. The maximum heart rate is the highest heart rate achieved during maximal exercise. One simple way to calculate the predicted maximum heart rate is by using the formula: 220 - your age = predicted maximum heart rate

Based on the results of the SEGAK test conducted in my school, the pulse rate of 50 students before and after the step up board activity is recorded in the table below.
