Add Post To Favorites #1 (permalink) Perusing ABOVE THE WAR FRONTS I came across a short item about Edward Arthur Simpson, 2nd Lt. 49 Sqdn RAF.It rather laconically mentions that he got the DFC for shooting down five planes in two days. A closer look shows that four of them were shot down in the same fight, with Simpson and his American pilot being forced down into the bargain. To me that has the look of a real interesting story. Has anything been written about this fight? How would one find the combat report and/or the DFC citation? __________________ "The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: It connected in one indissoluable bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity" President Adams 7/4/1821

He was with No.49 Squadron and the "London Gazette" citation (November 2nd, 1918) reads, "On their return from a bombing raid, the formation with which this officer was serving as an observer was attacked by 25 to 30 Fokkers. In the running fight that ensued, 2nd Lieutenant Simpson, with marked coolness and judgement, shot down two machines in flames and caused two more to crash. He has displayed gallantry and courage in many bomb raids, and he rendered exceptional service during the Mane operations." It is possible that the recommendation was much longer and more detailed. Said recommendations, when found, are normally in files with a title like "Honours and Awards - VIII Brigade" or "Honours and Awards - 9 Wing" - so your best bet is first to identify which higher formation included 49 Squadron, the search PRO website (Air 1 records) for the appropriate file. See also Air 76. Combat reports might be in a specific squadron file or in a Brigade or Wing file. Your next task is to either visit the PRO or pay somebody to visit it on your behalf.

There are combat reports for these two for 22 July 1918, at 1820 hurs, a Fokker biplane OOC at Sergy, in DH 9 C2202. The CR is in Air 1/1223/204/5/2634/49 Sqdn, frame 34 on the microfilm. An additional combat report for 8 August 1918, at 1835, a Pfalz Scout with 3 black horizontal stripes, in flames, at Bethencourt, in DH 9 D3165. Same reference as above, frame 28. The combat report for 9 August 1918 is in a different piece, Air 1/498/15/319/5 Combat Reports by Various American Pilots. There were in DH 9 C2202 again, and claimed a Fokker Biplane at Marchelepot in flames at 0630, a second Fokker Biplane at Ablaincourt in flames at the same time. A third Fokker Biplane was clamed at 0640 at Soyecourt OOC, and the fourth Fokker at 0645 at Lamotte, OOC. This piece only contains about 15-20 combat reports, some duplicated, and as far as I know has not been microfilmed. Both pieces are open to researchers at the PRO, and could be Xeroxed by the staff if you go in person. The microfilm can be read and printed in the Microfilm Room, same arrangement, although you do the copying in the microfilm room. __________________ Civilization is the most fragile ecology of all.
