Math 112 Section 8: Math Analysis for Business II at Loyola Marymount University Fall Semester 2013

Basic information Prerequisites: Passing grade in Math 120 or mathematics placement exam Lecture: Tuesday and Thursday 3:00-4:15pm in Pereira 208 Instructor: Bassem Saad, Email: Bassem.Saad@lmu.edu Course section number: 40701 Oce Hours: My oce is located in 2768 UH and will be held Tuesday and Thursday 6:00-7:15pm and by appointment. Your are encourage to come to my oce unannounced during any one of my schedule oce hours. Occasionally I will have to cancel my oce hours (for holidays or meetings), but I will announce any changes in class or in a broadcast email. If you cannot make it at one of the times above, you may contact me to arrange another time. Textbook: Chapters 11-15 and 17 of College Mathematics For the Managerial, Life, and Social Sciences by Tan, 2008, ISBN-13:978-0-495-01583-3. Overview and content: Math 112 is an introduction to dierential and integral calculus of elementary functions. Applications of the methods of calculus to business and economics problems. In particular we will study the following: Functions and their graphs; the algebra of functions; limits, one-sided limits and continuity; derivative and slope of tangent lines; rules for dierentiation: product and quotient rules, the chain rule; marginal functions in economics; higher order derivatives; dierentials; increasing and decreasing functions; concavity and the second derivative test; curve sketching; optimization; exponential and logarithmic functions; dierentiation of exponential functions; dierentiation of logarithmic functions; antiderivatives and indenite integrals; integration by substitution; area and denite integrals; the fundamental theorem of calculus; evaluating denite integrals; applications of denite integrals; functions of several variables and partial derivatives. Learning Outcome: A student who successfully completes the course will be able to: 1. Be able to use the basic tools of mathematics for business at calculus level, including solving problems involving: limits, derivatives, exponential and logarithmic functions, and anti-derivatives. 2. Be able to use problem solving skills of business processes including cost, revenue, prot modeling, and maximizing prot. 3. Improve problem solving skills. 4. Be able to write down carefully the reasoning and the setps involved in the correct solution to a given problem. 1

5. Be able to discuss mathematical ideas. 6. Be more aware and reective about their approaches to studying, learning and doing mathematics. Work Expectations: The rule of thumb for courses at LMU is that for each unit of credit received, a student is to dedicate 3 hours outside of class to that course each week. This course carries 3 units of credit and so you are expected to dedicate about 9 hours outside of classroom each week for this course. Grading Policy: Homework 13% (drop the lowest score ) Quiz 15% (drop the lowest score ) Regular Exams 42% (That is 20% each) Final Exam 30% An overall average score above 90% will receive at least an A-, average above 80% will receive at least a B-, an average 70% will receive at least a C, and an overall average above 60% will receive at least a D. Exam and Quiz: There will be 2 regular exams, 6 quizzes and a nal exam. Refer to the calendar below for the dates of each. You are not allowed to use the book, notes, calculators, electronic devices, or partners to help you through any exam or quiz. There are no make-up exams or quizzes. If you miss a quiz or exam, you will receive a zero on it unless you have made arrangements with me before. Arrangements to take the quiz or exam at an alternate time will only be made for legitimate reasons (e.g. illness, family emergency, travel related to your membership on an LMU athletic team, travel to an academic conference, etc.) Homework: Homework will be assigned throughout the week, and collected the rst class day of the following week. Late homework will not be excepted. You are encouraged to work with other students. However, you are never to use another students homework as an aid for your self. Ten problems will be select randomly for the assignment and your score will be based on these problems. Each problem will receive a score of 0, 1, 2, or 3. grade. Three points means a completely correct solution, two points means a nearly correct solution and one point means a reasonable attempt was made to solve the problem. Students are expected to show all work. Your total score on an assignment will be somewhere between 0-30. Email: I may communicate with you through the campus email system throughout the semester. It is essential that you check your lion.lmu.edu email address frequently. Modication of Syllabus: This syllabus and its contents are subject to revision and you will be responsible for any changes or modications announced in class and posted on MYLMUConnect. Americans with Disabilities Act: Students with special needs as addressed by the Americans with

Disabilities Act who who need reasonable modications, special assistance, or accommodations in this course should promptly direct their request to the Disability Support Services Oce. Any student who currently has a documented disability (physical, learning, or psychological) needing academic accommodations should contact the Disability Services Oce (Daum Hall Room 224, 310-338-4535) as early in the semester as possible. All discussions will remain condential. Please visit http://www.lmu.edu/dss for additional information. Academic Honesty: Academic dishonesty will be treated as a serious matter. Consequence range from receiving no credit on the assignment to expulsion. Although collaboration on homework assignments is encourage, all work submitted must be your own. Copying another student work or from source outside of the class is not acceptable. It is your responsibility to ensure your work meets the standards outline in the LMU Honor Code and Process in the most recent Undergraduate Bulletin. Classroom Behavior and code of conduct: As an LMU Lion, by the Lions code, you are pledged to join the discourse of the academy with honesty of voice and integrity of scholarship and to show respect for sta, professor, and other students. Disruptive behavior which is persistent or signicantly interferes with classroom activities may be subject to disciplinary action. A student may be referred to the Oce of Student Judicial Aairs if their behavior constitutes a violation of the conduct code. Electronic Devices: You may bring calculators or computers to lecture, but these devices must be turned o and put away during quizzes and exams. The only exception is a scientic calculator. You must turn o any other device will prove to be a distraction during class. This includes phones. Withdrawal Deadline: It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the class. University deadline for to withdraw from class, or to apply for Credit/ No Credit grading is August 30. Important Dates: First day of instruction, August 27 Last day to add or drop without a grade of w, August 30 Last day to withdraw from classes or apply for Credit/No Credit grading, November 1 No Class- Thanksgiving, November 28 Last day of classes, December 6 Final exam 2pm, December 10 Class Schedule: The schedule may change to better suite the speed of the class.
