WRITERSGALLERY LIFE Early years David Herbert Lawrence was born in 1885

in a mining village in the industrial Midlands of England. His father was a coal miner and worked in the pit all his life. His mother a former schoolmistress came from a lower middle! class background. "lthough the marriage was not happ# the couple had five children. $he relationship between Lawrence and his mother was e%tremel# close& she encouraged him to get an education so that he would not become a miner like his father. The college years 'hen he finished school Lawrence took a course at (ottingham )niversit# *ollege. During his college #ears he began to write $he 'hite +eacock and tried his hand at short stories and pla#s. "fter graduation he took a teaching post in London where he was introduced into literar# circles. ,n the same period he started writing $he $respasser and the autobiographical novel +aul Morel which was become -ons and Lovers. 'hen his mother died of cancer in 1.1/ Lawrence fell so ill that he stopped working as a teacher and ended his relationship with 0essie *hambers 1the Miriam of -ons and Lovers2 who had been his girlfriend since he was si%teen. He had various love affairs which served as models for the *lara of -ons and Lovers revised $he $respasser and settled down to rewrite -ons and Lovers. WORKS Main themes D.H. Lawrence was a prolific and eclectic writer who

e%perimented with various genres3 novels short stories pla#s and poems. $he principal sub4ects of his work were relationships emotions and conflict. ,n his novels and poems he e%plored such themes as the effect of industrialism and rationalism on the common man the role of women in modern societ# the conflict between prevailing moralit# and se% and the nature of the relationship between mother and son.
