    Mechanism of action and indications: Nursing Implications (what to focus on):

    Contraindications/warnings/interactions- hypersensitivity,
    It inhibits neuronal uptake of serotonin in the CNS, Use cautiously in severe hepatic or renal impairment, or in
    potentiating the activity of serotonin. patients with cardiac disease.

    For Depression. Common side effects:


    CNS: dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, H/A, insomnia,
    agitation.
    EENT: pharyngitis, rhinitis, tinnitus
    CV: chest pain, palpitations
    GI: diarrhea, dry mouth, nausea, abdominal pain, anorexia,
    altered taste, constipation
    GU:sexual dysfunction, urinary disorders
    Derm: increased sweating
    MS: back pain, myalgia
    Neuro: tremor, twitching
    Misc: fever, thirst
    Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal Lab value alterations caused by medicine:
    medicines (ask patient specifically): Monitor serum sodium if placed on a diuretic

    Neurontin- may cause additive CNS depression effects. Be sure to teach the patient the following about this
    medication:
    Good oral hygiene and sugarless candy or gum for dry
    mouth. May cause drowsiness of dizziness. Wear
    sunscreen to prevent photosensitivity reaction. Avoid
    Alcohol.

    Monitor mood changes, inform physician or being, renewed interest in
    PCP if increase in anxiety, nervousness or Hold if pt shows marked increased in surroundings.

    Contact PCP.
