Annual Meeting of the Congregation January 26, 2014

The next annual meeting of the congregation of Central Presbyterian Church and of the members of our church corporation (Central Presbyterian Church, Inc., of Terre Haute, Indiana) (the corporation), will be held in the church sanctuary immediately following 10:30 a.m. worship (that is, approximately 11:30 a.m.) on Sunday, January 26, 2014. Among other items of business that will come before that annual meeting, the session (and the board of directors of the corporation) will seek the approval by the congregations active members (and the members of the corporation) of Amended and Restated Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws for the corporation. The proposed restatement of and amendments to the Articles of Incorporation of the corporation and the proposed amendments to the current Bylaws are intended to conform those documents, as nearly as possible, to the existing Indiana Code (Title 23) and the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), including Part I (The Book of Confessions) and Part II (The Book of Order), and to reconcile Indiana statutory law with the nomenclature and polity of The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Copies of the existing Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws are available in the church office and are posted in the churchs Fellowship Hall, as are copies of the proposed Amended and Restated Articles of Incorporation and amended Bylaws. Copies of the proposed Amended and Restated Articles of Incorporation and amended Bylaws may also be found in the churchs 2013 Annual Report, which will be available for pickup in the Fellowship Hall beginning on Sunday, January 12, 2014.

For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. (Romans 12:4-13 NRSV) As I write this article, I am remembering with joy and appreciation the way our congregation came together to observe Advent and to celebrate Christmas. Just as there were persons with varied talents and spiritual gifts in the churches to which the Apostle Paul ministered, so I have seen displayed many talents in our congregation. You have your decorators, who know just how to hang the garland in the sanctuary. There are organizers, who can with grace and a sense of purpose communicate to others where help is needed. What would we do without all the musical gifts in our congregationthe instrumentalists, the singers, the directors, the composers? Just think how much talent (and hard work) it takes to present a Christmas cantata: the choir (with Mark and Jonathan) have been rehearsing since early fall in order to bless us all with their musical offerings. Not to be outdone, the children and youth rose to the occasion with A Charlie Brown Christmas, memorizing their lines, making rehearsals a priority, and following the expert direction of Jean Shutt, Amanda Mang, and all their adult helpers. For the Christmas Eve candlelight service of lessons and carols, the brass was polished, the candles were restored and lit, the pew racks were organized, and we enjoyed hearing readings by members of past and current youth groups. Our own members were blessed by the service, and we showed great hospitality to others in the community who look forward to this service every year. Thanks to the church staff communications were clear, necessary equipment was in good working order, and the church was organized and clean. The cookies, as always, were delicious; and the Worship Commission came through with another great rendering of the churchs famous wassail recipe. I have no doubt that the love I saw in so many eyes was, in Pauls words, genuine. You literally outdid one another in showing honor to each other and allowing each persons gifts to shine forth. We rejoiced in hope as again we welcomed the coming of our Savior. I am deeply grateful to you all. Quoting Paul, we say it all the time; but it is important never to forgettogether we are one body in Christ.

To the church family: Thank you so much for the cards, other expressions of good will and the generous Christmas gift each of us received. We are so grateful for your love and support. Blessings to each of you for the new year. Lant, Cheryl, Mark, Jonathan, Alvin, Tiffany and Sarah

Deacons Assist County Students

Did you know that Vigo County has one of Indianas largest percentage of students living below the poverty level? During the week they are provided with breakfast and lunch at school, but sadly, may be hungry on the weekends when food in their homes is limited. Many children in our own community benefit from the districts Backpack Lunch program which sends food home with them on Fridays so they have food to eat during the weekend. At the end of December, a portion of our CPC Deacons Fund provided 340 students from Deming and Franklin Elementary Schools with an addition to their Backpack Lunches. Each of them received a jar of peanut butter and box of crackers to supplement their diet during the winter break. Our Deacons agreed that this outreach in the community was a worthwhile project for Central Presbyterian Church.

Mission Committee News

Many families in the Terre Haute area enjoyed a Thanksgiving Dinner this year due in part to The Lighthouse Mission. The Mission has struggled this year, but was able to come through and give away a large number of baskets. The Mission Committee made a monetary donation for turkeys and several members of Central Presbyterian helped put the baskets together. Thank-you to all who helped with this project. The spirit of Christmas was felt by two families from Salvation Army, one family from 14th and Chestnut and one former pre-school family. Gift tags were taken from the tree in the social hall, money was used from the Mission Committee's local benevolence fund, and when the pre-school family was added and we needed extra help, the women's bible study group became elves and we had some secret elves! Thank-you so much to everyone who helped make this a special Christmas for fifteen children. They enjoyed clothes, toys and gift cards were purchased for food. Thank-you to Tiffany Grossman who helped wrap gifts for the family for 14th and Chestnut.

LADIES, save the date: Wednesday, January 29. Were planning a night out for the women of Central. Dinner will be provided, and there will be a crock pot recipe exchange. Watch the e-news and the Sunday bulletin for details as the date approaches.

Per Capita literally means by the head. In January, our treasurer will pay our share of our denominations administrative expenses. The per capita this year is $29.33 per active member. Please assist the church by paying your per capita early in the year.
