The welding zone must be protected from humidity and weathering conditions. A minimum temperature of 75 C must be maintained when welding with rutile-coated electrode. In cases involving a wall thickness of * 8 mm, steel types 13 CrMo 4 4 and 10 CrMo 9 10 will be joined mainly by TIG welding. In this context, a minimum preheating temperature of 5C must be maintained. In cases involving root welding with rutile-covered electrodes, the preheating temperature must be at least 150 C. Maintenance of a minimum temperature of 200C is recommended. Prior to post-welding heat treatment, the material must be cooled down to a temperature of below 130C. This temperature, however, must not fall below 80C. Simple butt welds involving a wall thickness of up to approx. 10 mm can be cooled down to room temperature after welding before being heated to annealing temperature. For welding in the martensitic phase, a maximum preheating and inter-pass temperature of 300C should generally not be exceeded For welding in the austenitic phase, a maximum preheating and inter-pass temperature of 450C should generally not be exceeded. For root welding as per the TIG process, the material must be preheated to a minimum temperature of 250C.
Determination of the preheating temperature for fine-grain structural steels as per SEW 088 The following description provides an overview of the contents of SEW 088. Of course, SEW 088 includes further information going beyond the contents specified below. Investigations performed on cold cracks showed that the CE (carbon equivalent) defined in DIN EN 10 025 no longer applies. According to SEW 088, the following carbon equivalent is more meaningful, especially where fine-grain steels are concerned Carbon equivalent: in [%] (1)
The thermal input from welding can be determined with the help of equation (2). Calculation of the carbon equivalent.

Wrmenachbehandlung
