ANSWER STRATEGY PHYSICS QUESTIONS PAPER 2 Subjective Questions (2 Hours 30 Minutes)


SECTION A 1. Consists of 8 questions (answer all the 8 questions) 2. Total mark in Section A is 60 marks. 3. You are advised to spend 90 minutes on this section. 4. Before attempting to answer questions, read the questions at least twice and highlight the key words provided so that you will not go out of point. 5. Do not force yourself to answer Questions 1 first if you are not too sure of the answers. Answer questions that you are most sure of first. This will help you increases your confidence to answer the questions that you are not so sure of. 6. A section that is allocated only 1 mark will require a short answer. On the other hand, a section that is allocated 3 marks will require you to state 3 properties or characteristic associated with the particular section. 7. While answering questions that involve calculations, make sure that you write down all the steps in the spaces provided in the questions paper, including the formula used. SECTION B 1. Consists of two questions. (answer only ONE question) 2. The marks allocated for this section is 20 marks. 3. You are advised to spend 30 minutes on this section. 4. The questions from section B are normally preceded by a diagram that shows a certain state or situation that is related to a specific Physics concept. 5. You are normally asked to state the characteristics shown in the diagram and also to state the Physics principles involved. 6. Study the marks allocated to each section or sub-section in the questions. The marks allocated in each section may be as high as 10 marks. In such cases, make sure that you have at least 10 points or properties related to the section as each point is normally allocated 1 mark. SECTION C 1. Consists of two questions. (answer ONE question only) 2. The marks allocated for this section is 20 marks. 3. You are advised to spend 30 minutes on this section. 4. The questions from Section C are normally preceded by a table that is related to a specific Physics Concept. 5. Study the marks allocated to each section or sub-section in the questions. The marks allocated in each section may be as high as 10 marks. In such cases, make sure that you have at least 10 points or properties related to the section as each point is normally allocated 1 mark. 6. The questions in this section normally require you to state a certain principle or to explain certain properties or characteristics based on the information given.

2. CONCEPTUALISING (Questions 5, 6 and 9 or 10)


Look at the diagram, table and chart or graph carefully. State only what is in the diagram, table, chart or graph. Understand the task: a) Comparison: (i) Compare greater/less than, longer/shorter, higher/lower, equal/same (ii) Similarities and differences Similarities state the same characteristics Differeces state the characteristics that is different b) Relate/Relationship: When .. increases, .. increases/decreases. .. is directly proportional to .. .. is inversely proportional to .. Name the law/principle/concept involved.

EXAMPLE 2.1: KLT09P2SAQ5 Diagram 5.1 and Diagram 5.2 show two balloons A and B exerted with the same force.

(d) State one application of physics concept in 5(c) in our daily life. .[1 mark] EXAMPLE 2.2: KLT09P2SAQ6 Diagram 6.1 and Diagram 6.2 show the bright and dark fringes of the waves formed on the screen when a light rays pass through a double slit plate.

(a) What is meant by a coherent source? ..[1 mark] (b) Observe Diagram 6.1 and Diagram 6.2, (i) Compare the distance between two slits. .[1 mark] (ii) Compare the distance between consecutive bright fringes. .[1 mark] (iii) Compare the distance between the double slit plate and the screen. .[1 mark] (c) (i) Relate the distance between the two slits with the distance between consecutive bright fringes. .[1 mark] (ii) Name the wave phenomenon which forms the pattern of the fringes in Diagram 6.1 and Diagram 6.2. .[1 mark] EXAMPLE 2.3: KLT09P2SBQ9 Diagram 9.1 and Diagram 9.2 show parallel rays are directed towards the lenses P and Q with focal point F.

Relate the thickness of the lens with the focal length to make a dedection regarding the relationship between thickness of the lens and the power of lens. (b) Using Diagram 10.1 and Diagram 10.2, compare the amplitude, number of complete oscillations and period of the traces. Relate the number if complete oscillations with the period of oscillation to make a deduction regarding the relationship between period and frequency. [5 marks]

3. PROBLEM SOLVING (Question 7 and 9 or 10)

EXAMPLE 3.1: SBP12P2SAQ7 Diagram 7.2 shows the design of a reflector made by a student to dry shoes using solar energy.

The reflector in Diagram 7.2 does not dry the shoes effectively. Suggest a modification that can be made to the reflector to dry shoes more effectively through these aspects, (i) Shape of the reflector Reason: [2 marks] (ii) Type of surface of the reflector Reason: [2 marks] (iii) Size of the reflector Reason: [2 marks] EXAMPLE 3.2: SPM08P2SBQ9 Diagram 9.3 shows a pole vaulter performing a jump.

Using appropriate physics concepts, explain the use of suitable equipment and techniques to improve his performance. Your answer should include the following aspects: (i) Material used for javelin. The time taken to defrost the fish is more than two hours.

Using appropriate physics concepts, explain the suitable characteristics of a plate that can defrost more frozen fishes in a shorter time. The plate can be moved from one place to another. Using appropriate physics concepts, explain the modifications should be done on the system so that it can be used to determine the position of an aeroplane more efficiently. Your answer should include the following aspects: (i) Diameter of the parabolic disc. [2 marks] (ii) Distance of the signal receiver from the center of the parabolic disc. [2 marks] (iii) Type of wave transmitted. [2 marks] (iv) Height of the parabolic disc from the ground. [2 marks] (v) Characteristics of the surface of the parabolic disc. You are required to give some suggestions to design a canoe which can travel faster and safer. Using appropriate physics concepts, suggest and explain how to build a water heater which can boil a larger quantity of water faster, more efficient and more safety based on the following aspects; (i) Type of material used for the heating element of the water heater (ii) Shape of heating element of the water heater (iii) Melting point of the heating element of the water heater (iv) Rate of rusting of the heating element of the water heater (v) Additional component used for safety when the water boil [10 marks]
