Yard Accidents?
Running a Yard of bulldogs is full of challenges and sometimes the most unsuspected could happen. Any responsible owner must try to think of
the most outlandish scenario and chances are it will happen. Could you all share some of the situations one can try to prevent. Apart from the
dogs getting in trouble you could get hurt(ever been hit on the shin or tangled by a chain with a zealous Bulldog on the end?)
I was moving from KY back to TX in the late 90's. I had all the dogs in their crates and would rotate them out to one chain I still had set up
while we were clearing housing. I had a male in his crate, locked in the shed that somehow managed to get out of his crate, out of the locked
shed and hit a Bitch I had on a chain. Fortunately we were home and my wife saw him exit the shed so I was able to get them apart fairly
quick.

I have a 3yr old male, very comfortable with the pups. One evening my 4month old male pup gets up walks over to the male & hit im straight
in the face! The 3yr old shook him off & he comes straight back in and get a hold on the Muzzle . Needles to say I stopped it quickly.

My buddys male APBT slept in his room and my male had free run of the house. When he would get up to leave for work my dog was locked in
the bathroom while he put his outside on the chain.(My house so my dog gets to stay inside)
Well I looked outside and saw his car I figured he was still asleep cause he wasn't at work so I let my male outide to use the bathroom.Made a
bowl of cereal, got my clothes ready, took a piss and as I'm walking to the backdoor I discover out the back window that....Hey,my buddies dog
is getting his ass handed to him by mine. What a dumbass putting his dog out there on the chain while mines out there.
Ok so yeah thats not good. Here comes the best part.My male was the freak of his litter. He sits around 68lb well fed even conditioned down
he'd still be every bit of 60.Anyone here ever tried to break up a 60+lber and a 45lber.....SOLO!
Word of advice....I seriously don't reccomend trying it.
So here I am in the back Yard screaming for my buddy to grab a stick and help me get them apart. This goes on for like 10 minutes.I'm holding
my monster while he's holds the other dogs neck and I have them pulled to the end of the chain so there isn't much room for them to shake
and move around to much.I don't care how big you are, holding a 60lber while he's doing his thing for 10minutes you are not gonna have much
strength left.
So he never shows...but I get lucky and I see my GF walk by the window so I'm screaming for her to come gimme a hand,She don't hear
me....Turns out the cold she had was a sinus problem of some sort and her ears were plugged up and could barley hear.
She finally sees me out the window and she comes out there flipping out...Send her in for the breaking stick, she can't find it...FUCK!
So I see this old oak rockingchair thats been sitting outside waiting for the dump...I tell her grab that and try to work it in,maybe I'll get lucky
and he'll snap for a better hold and she'll get it in.
Not happening.By this time I can barely stand I'm so tired so I told her screw it,Smack'em in the head with the chair maybe he'll get dazed and
let go(he has a very hard head so I knew it wouldn't hurt him to bad lol)
Swing one......STRIKE
Swing two......STRIKE
Swing three....The dog jerks forward and I take the full blow of a old oak rocking chair across the head.
I didn't see any tweety birds but I saw one hell of a white flash.I finally say screw it if I don't get them apart somehow one of thems gonna die
and I'd sure feel bad telling my buddy his dog was dead.
So I sit there, get a good hold and when my male seemed like he was calming down I yanked with all I had and luckily as I did his hold slipped
and when he opened up to get a better one my momentum pulled him back faster than he could bite*WHEW* finally.
So I go inside covered in blood, sweat and mud ready to kick my buddies ass for doing something so stupid.....
Then it dawned on me.....I haddn't seen my buddy since I got up.
Turns out he rode with his GF somewhere in her car.He wasn't home. The dog had been out there since like 2 hours before I got up.
Always double check your routine cause the lsightest mistep can be disaster lol.
Of the many accidents that could happen withthe dogs. Tell of situations that you could get in. For instance, I had just moved in one of my
bigger boys from one Yard to the next. He escaped from his Kennel one morning and fled into the woods, spent a great part of the day looking
for him finally that night just after the rain we went into the bush to see if we found him. Now i'm the only person that dog has a connection
with (poorly raised) when we did get him and i clipped a lead on my partner who has a very thunderous voice exclaimed and that sob got
spooked and bolted. There i was in the dark in the bush and being dragged through the mud by a freaked out 60 lb Bulldog . About 200yds
later i managed to get him under control and back home.
Another one "Anyone ever get hit on the shin from a chain" only a toothache could be more painful
quite a few times i have looked up and realized i forgot to shut a crate or let someone out while another was still on a chain
only by the grace of god have i been able to correct my mistakes quickly so nothing happened
the standard crates from pet stores will not Stop a Bulldog who wants out
any suggestions of serious crates would be appreciated
It seems like all my Yard accidents happen in the middle of the night when im sleeping hard. But luckily anthing can wake me up and there is
that certain sound that i cant explain when dogs are in holds and that sound can wake me up fast. The hard thing about it is getting my ass up
and getting outside to the accident as fast as i can without falling. And i cant count how many times i get a chain hitting my shin and boy does
that hurt.
Quote:
And same for me with accidents happening at night.Haven't had any while I was sleeping so far.I have however went outside late evening to
get something from the car or whatever and heard them.Seems like they always plan it when your at a disadvantage.(dark, alone,no breaking
stick)
They do have a very unique sound when they have a hold.Kinda like a growl and squeal at the same time.I couldn't hear them in the house
cause of the a/c and the fan blowing but every so often I'll jerk awake thinking I just heard them and after sitting up in bed for a few minutes I'll
remember that oh yeah, there is no way i just heard them lol.
need help, i just had a Yard accident today. i have a 3 year old male that gets along with pups ACCEPT when something gets him excited. i
also have a 8 month old female and a 8 week old male. they all play in the Yard while i am home and watching i looked away, the female
grabbed the pup(she has been hot from day one and has tried to hit other adults) i havn't had any problems with the 3 before when the female
grabbed the pup he sarted yelping and my male jumped in and grabbed him also. luckily i got outside quick and got them apart which wasn't
easy my male hates to break holds and i had no Breaking Stick and the female kept coming back. well dont know for sure but think the little
guys shoulder is broke. i have lost my job and been outta work cant pay vet. the biggest problem i am concerned with is swelling in the Chest ,
any body have some suggestions please!!
Quote:
Not trying to be a dick or anything but why the hell were they all together. If your female was "hot" from day one then why let her around any
other dogs. If you ask me this could have been easily prevented. If you dont have the money to fix the pup then go and have him euthanized
and he shouldnt have to deal with the pain because of your stupidity.
well you are a dick and she has been around the pup since he was pretty much born, she is also very young and yeah she is hot but to dogs
she does not know. two pups are usually fine. i know my dogs better than you, yeah shit happens and you always have to be careful, i know
this. but if you can say you never had an accident well you havn't had dogs long huh, the dog doesn't need to be euthanized just needs a little
medical ass hole if your not going to give advice don't respond!!!!!!! accidents happen pal !!!!!!
im sorry to say, but most of what ive just been reading here bemuses me.
it is true that Yard accidents can and do happen, fact.
but what ive seen displayed above are accidents just waiting to happen.
2-3 dogs runn'n around the Yard , in the house..lol...that is a joke. wake up!!!
these people dont know bulldogs,Fact..
get real or get a different breed. THAT IS GOD DAMN GOOD ADVISE.
i dont usually abuse anyone about anything but a good majority should not own bulldogs. try using ya head and think about it before you snap
back, curr's snap lol...
yis, respect to those who deserve it.

ERASER (August 10th, 2008)
Owning a bulldog.
Id just like to tell you of one such thing that happened to me years ago.
I had a well bred female that my better half took a real liking to so she became our house dog. We moved interstate and were living in a small
town with neighbours. I got permission to raise all my fences to Ten feet. One of the neighbours carports was 12 feet high and butted up
against our fence. They also had a dog of another breed.
My young family know the rules, you go out somewhere, the dog goes on the chain.
I come home from work, grab a beer and go out and let my dog off the chain. Im giving her a good pet and throwing the ball. The better half
comes home and I go inside to greet her, ive completely forgot about my dog which ive just left out side in an excited mood. Next minute the
neighbour nocked on my door and ask’s me with a slightly puzzled look, “could you please come and get your dog off our roof?”
Needless to say ive never moved so quick and I was god damn lucky she didn’t jump down and “play” with their dog.
All this in no time at all. Things like this can and will happen in the blink of an eye unless you have your head screwed on all the time. And the
consequences are devastating.
I believe the utilization of fences, chain runs and Kennel runs are a must.
I Keep a number of dogs on a property, they are on a cable/pulley set up, the area in which they are is also fenced. The chains, pulley’s,
cables, collars and surrounding fencing is checked daily as is the essentials of the dogs wellbeing/ food water etc.
If I cant do it, there is someone who can. It takes a bit of time out of your day but everything else must come second to this. This is what you
wanted, take care of it impeccably or don’t do it.
Id like to come back to this a bit later as there is so much more to say and I hope im giving some of you some advise you could use. Don’t
think ah crap, what ever, if you are thinking that, stay away from the Bulldog and obtain another breed. These dogs are not for you.
Bear.

To bear and carolina, I do have chain setups and i have been in this Game a long time. I have just got back getting some more young
prospects due to personal issues i have had only my one 3 year old male which is a house dog and is around young pups all the time, the
thing is if 2 other dogs get into it he is going to get in the middle"ALFA' dog that is what he is. And 2 young dogs interacting is not bad
ownership in my eye's. I asked a ? and if you think this site is to just criticise other people than all to ya!! I personally think you both are ass
holes. and wish you both lived close we could settle in the [] and see who the CURR really is buddy. I have had over 50 dogs at one time with
no Yard accidents and have had just 2 and had accidents, I do know what i am doing. Find out about a person before you Judge ass hole, and
PR get made at me for what im saying but i am not a curr and will not stand for someone talking to me the way they are.
i appolagize for using the word curr, and i agree that letting a couple young dogs interact is a good thing, but in reality if you are what you say,
you would have understood exactly what i was say'n. and you would know exactly what could happen if you have the other dog around and not
put your dogs or your self in that situation in the first place.
second, this is not the place to challenge someone, that in itself tells me alot about someone.
third. if youve been in the Game for such along time and youve had 50 to contend with at once, i ask, why in that situation,Why no Breaking
Stick at hand, why dont you know what to do. If i had 50 bulldogs to contend with id Know everything there was to know before being there in
the first place. if by some chance im reading you all wrong i do apolagize but im just sick of hearing about the people that say they are this and
that , been there, done that, but still know stuff all.
Bear...

All im going to say is look at who is in the situation not us its you. I dont have a very big Yard like other dogmen do but i do have money saved
up for vet cost incase a accident did happen in the Yard that i couldnt take care of by myself. I always make sure i have money to care for the
dogs on my Yard before i go out and purchase another dog. Its all just common sense.

Keep a eye on his breathing.I had a female died from a punctured lung.Male got off chain caught her in the center of her chest. We thought she
was fine and just swelling up from the bite.
Turns out he broke a rib or something and it punctured her lung. The fluid building in her Lungs was making her look like she was swelling. We
figured it out when her breathing Started getting bad but it was to late.

Sorry for your loss. This is a sad thing. This Heat in Texas is no joke this year. It is VERY HOT! I had to move the Bitch with the pups in the
cooled off garage just to Keep them safe from the Heat . I've worked too hard to produce these and I have learned a lesson.

I have only shed a few tears over dogs for if you dont have tough skin your in the wrong sport... Both of these times were cause I lost a good
dog due to a Yard accident... I actually lost them at the same time for one broke chain and jumped on the nearest dog while i was at work and
by the time I had got home I come home to two dogs that bled out. One was already hooked for three weeks later and was going for his Ch.. I
didn't sleep for a month..
Moral of the story.. Keep a good eye and proper set-up for your little athletes for if you dont you too may shed a few tears.. It always sucks to
lose a good dog but to lose one via Yard accident is just unexecptable... This breed takes extra care and time to ensure a happy healthy yard...
This is not directed to anyone jsut my personal experience.. It only took me one time but it was a hard lesson learned...
i have had a few accidents mainly due to my own mistakes but i have my dogs situated in kennels with secure tops and good flooring. locked
door etc. now so no worries anymore.
as far as letting these dogs together, well, look what happens i wont risk that for any reason once a dog acts hot it is separated for good no
matter what.
i would say if you cant afford to have at least an x ray done to confirm the problem think about putting that pup down. i wouldnt just leave it be
hoping for it to survive if it is that bad.

i aways look @ my chains and hard were, these dogs are hard on everything, kennels, bowls, even the ground they run around on i have a had
new clip explod only days after putting it on..........the end result a dead dog.

Anyone ever have a escape artist? No matter what kind of clasp, ring, attachment the dog finds a way to get off of it leaving no visible
explanation. Finally I got one of them carabiner type clasps and taped the damn thing shut.An the C clasp with the screw up part on it I used
that to attach the steel ring to the other end of the chain and used Loc-Tite on it.
If the dog gets loose from this set up I'm calling it a divine intervention.

i hear ya on the escape artist texas. i had one along time ago, and i have one now to contend with. she's on a cable/pulley set up in a fenced
Yard . 3 clips on the Collar , thats pulled her up. i spyed on her one day and watched her lay on the ground and get the clip between her paws,
then uses one of her paws as if she is trying to push the clip open lol...
it cost me a few bucks to get things right, cause if she could get a clip open, id change the rest of the dogs clips as well, to make sure.
i also had the pleasure of our old house dog open the back door.
the missus locked the door and left the key in the lock, somehow, i dont know lol..she got that key turned and the Handle , then pulled the door
open.
dont put anything past em, they want in or out or off, whatever, theyll work it out.
My last accident on the Yard was about a 1yr ago, I had 4yr old heavy bred eli Bitch crossed to some OFRN that was about 55lbs, that hit my
7mon old male pup. Just a normal afternoon just put the male back on the chain & I was takin ol' girl off...for sum reason I just cut through his
area & he felt a lil froggy that day. He ran up & before I knew she had a deep Chest hold. Needless to say I had no Breaking Stick & it was just
me and my 13yr nephew. It probably took us 15min to get them apart, little guy was wrecked but he wanted to continue.

Only time ive ever had an accident was when I was new to owning bulldogs i had known and been around them for years previously. But I
had a pup that grew up to be a very heavy male about 57lb Chain Weight and I kept him on a pup chain all this time well one day he hit it far
too hard and the chain snapped.
Luckliy I was out with a friend feeding the rest of the Yard and seperated the dogs. put him in a crate while i went out and got thicker chain for
my whole Yard . (apart from the pups)

lol they look like dog prision cells.
thats not a crate thats a gunsafe with some breathing holes put in it.
Well I just had one the other day with some of my 3 month old pups. My GF was home on lunch when she hear a crash in the basement.
When she went down there SCK And Gemini were going at it like grown ass dogs. She called me at work and said they had gotten into a fight.
Me thinking they have never went at each other b4 and being so young it was just a puppy thing said well baby just pull them a part. By now
she was freakin out and was like I can they wont let go. So I took off work and there they are in hold for a least half hour now breathing hard
as hell and crying for more. The first thing I did after getting them a part and cleaned up is went and got another crate and some zip ties. They
are ok now and all is good but you never know when that shit will happen and I thank the Lord it happen when it did as if she had not been
there it could have been a 2hr thing.

Sounds like you got some feisty pups. I had some like that at that age. They sure do lose there baby teeth alot quicker.
The first one involved a male that was in a crate in my spare bedroom..While I was gone he chewed out of the crate, and jumped out of the
second story window, which was open (as it was summer) with the screen down..He made his way to the only other male on the Yard (that
happened to be a good one) and killed him..When I returned the dog on the chain was gone and the wiley ol' man came stumbling out of the
garage with straw stuck all over his Chest and face, looking to be in bad shape..Thankfully he made a full recovery..

The second involved a female that was on my Yard to be bred..I had a old female slip her Collar and get on this outside Bitch (who happened
to be my friends dog at the time but is now owned by me)..My roomate at the time was home by himself, and he is not a dogman, so he came
running to where I was at and we got back to the house as soon as we could (probably 5min after the whole ordeal started)..Fortunatly neither
female was seriously injured, even though the female that slipped her Collar probably wishes she had'nt slipped it..

you can get the metal ,stainless ones .put a carabiner through the latch.they wont go anywhere. get them at any Kennel supply place
curious.....what kind of clips are yall using? This seems to be a common theme the ones you get fro the local home depot will never work. Hell
I use a pad lock lol
