This review sheet is not exhaustive.

Check the review sheets from previous exams and look at the topics list therein. Do not be overwhelmed by the breadth of material. Use homework as your guide for the types of questions and concepts we think are the most important. The exam will have a similar format with some multiple choice and short answer questions. 2-2.5x the length of midterms ~30% new material since last exam; rest cumulative Includes material from labs o Titrations o Spectrophotochemical analysis o Nanocrystal absorbance o Distillation o UV-Vis; FT-IR spectroscopy o Polymer chemistry o Intermolecular Forces o Combustion/Calorimetry o Et cetera

Draw Lewis structures, predict geometries, and state whether polar or nonpolar for the following: a.) ONCl b.) O2NCl c.) XeF2 d.) SCl4 e.) CHF3

A technician prepared a solution by heating 100 milliliters of distilled water while adding KCl crystals until no more KCl would dissolve. She then capped the clear solution and set it aside on the lab bench. After several hours she noticed the solution had become cloudy and some solid had settled to the bottom of the flask. What happened?

a.) Calculate Gr for the formation of MgO (s) at 0 C. Is the reaction spontaneous or nonspontaneous? b.) Is there a temperature at which the formation of MgO switched from spontaneous to nonspontaneous or vice versa? If no, explain briefly why not. If yes, calculate the temperature (T*) at which the spontaneity of the reaction switches.

You are given solid forms of acetic acid and sodium acetate as well as some deionized water. a.) How would you make a buffer at pH 5? (pKa of acetic acid is 4.75) b.) Now .010 mol solid KOH is added to your buffer what is the pH of the solution that results?

Draw MO diagram for O2, N2. Draw MO diagram for CF (Assume no sp mixing). What is bond order for CF+,CF, and CF-. Which will be the shortest bond? Which are paramagnetic?

A beam of light with an intensity of 15 W is incident on a copper plate ( = 7.43 x 10-19). Electrons with a minimum wavelength of 0.375 nm are ejected from the surface of the copper. a.) What is the frequency of the light? (Hint: KE = mv2; p = mv) b.) Light with photon energy of 6.54 x 10-19 J is shined on the copper. With what, if any, kinetic energy are electrons ejected from the copper surface? Draw a 5p angular and radial probability density. Same for 4d. If I have 0.275 moles of gas at a temperature of 75 K and a pressure of 1.75 atmospheres, what is the volume of the gas? The critical temperature is 188 C for HF, is 51 C for HCl, and is 90 C for HBr. Explain
