Engagement of Government Engineering College or Research Institute for the Research Study for the experimental reach from

km 457/300 to 459/200 on NH 209 of Dindigul Bangalore Section in Karnataka

1.

Background & Objective:

Ministry is constructing a two lane with paved shoulder (8.50 m wide) experimental stretch from km 457/300 to 459/200 with eight options of pavement structures which are designed based on IRC:372012. To get an experience and more insight into bituminous mix design, material selection, pavement design and construction aspects etc. during the construction of eight pavement structures considered in this research project, a thorough research study is required to be conducted. This study may also involves qualitative as well as quantitative quantification of merits and de-merits of all eight pavement options with a objective to pave the way for the construction of a durable and economical pavement structure on National Highways in future. To evaluate this research project in terms of material characterization, design methodology, construction and in-service performance of the pavement structure, it is decided to generate enough research data bank based on pre construction testing, testing during the construction stages and in-service performance evaluation for three years. 2. Scope of Work: Main objective for constructing this experimental stretch is to get an experience and more insight into bituminous mix design, material selection, pavement design and construction aspects etc. during the construction of eight pavement structures considered in this research project. Other main objectives of this research study are:
2.1.

To determine all feasible pavement design input parameters to be used in the design of eight pavement structures considered in this research project in accordance with IRC:37-2012 or else. Structural design of all eight pavement structures. Listed and carry out all necessary tests including the following tests during pre-construction stage, and during construction stage so as ensure a durable and performing pavement structure. a. b. c. d. CBR value as well as resilient modulus for unbound material including sub grade soil. Aggregate selection and testing process including Triaxial Test for Aggregates for all eight pavement structures. All Bitumen Tests as per IS:73-2006. Bituminous Mixture Characterization Tests. Bulk specific gravity Aggregate gradation Theoretical maximum specific gravity

Bitumen content via Marshall Mix design method and Dynamic modulus

Bituminous Mix design and Bituminous Mix Performance Tests for Deformation resistance (rutting), Fatigue life, Tensile strength, Stiffness and Moisture susceptibility. All control tests as per IRC:111-2009, IRC:SP:89-2010 and Ministrys Specifications for Road and Bridge Works during construction stages of all eight pavement structures. Evaluation of pavement roughness and evenness compaction characteristics, surface

2.4. 2.5. 2.6. 2.7.

To identify the construction problems and suggest remedial guidelines. To suggest the practical and easy to use construction methodology for all eight pavement structures. Preparation of field-oriented manual comprising practical and easy to use testing procedures for all such tests including troubleshooting guidance. Pavement condition survey and in-service pavement performance evaluation should be carried out during for three years either through the following non-destructive Pavement Evaluation Tests or else: Benkelman Beam Falling Weight Deflectometer Nuclear Density Gauge Seismic Pavement Analyzer Dynamic Cone Penetrometer, and Ground Penetrating Radar

2.8. 2.9.

Construction quality control and quality assurance plan should be evolved for a durable and performing pavement structure. Quantify the merits and demerits of all eight pavement structures qualitatively and quantifiably. pavement design process and to suggest further course of actions for further studies.

2.10. Documentation of all the above with an objective to refine the existing

The aforesaid details about the scope of the research study is only suggestive and should include all other testing/details as per need to evolve a meaningful and realistic conclusion so as to further refine the pavement design process as stipulated in IRC: 37-2012 besides concluding the qualitative as well as quantitative, merits and de-merits of all eight pavement options with a objective to pave the way for the construction of a durable and economical pavement structure on National Highways in future.
