Year 3 Class Bulletin
Term 1 September 2009

Dear Parents / Carers,

Welcome to Year 3, I hope you all had a good summer break! We have had a very good first week back. The
class have settled brilliantly into the junior side of the school and are learning all the new routines.
In Maths this term we will be focusing on counting, partitioning and calculating using a variety of addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division strategies. Another main Maths focus will be times-tables. By the end
of Year 3 children are expected to know multiplication facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 times-tables. If your
child is already confident with these tables they can begin recalling the corresponding division facts. Please
encourage your child to regularly practise tables at home as this will really support their learning in class for
the year ahead.
In Literacy we will begin with learning about report writing and it will be linked to our creative curriculum topic
which is called ‘What in the world is going on?’ The information below will tell you a little bit more about it.

Topics this term Important Notes

RE – Moses. This unit focuses on the life of Moses
and what makes a good leader.
ICT – Will be linked with learning across the
curriculum this term. Children will be doing
internet research for report writing in Literacy and
fact finding for our Topic work. Children will work
on organising the layout and format of word
documents as well as adding graphics and
illustrations. Accuracy, speed and keyboard skills
used to type, edit and redraft will be developed
throughout the year. Miss Kemp will also be helping
out with ICT so we will all learn a lot!
Outdoor PE – Swimming. Swimming coaches will
be leading the swimming teaching.
Indoor PE – Dance. We are lucky enough to have
a professional dance teacher who will come in and
teach every Thursday afternoon.
Spanish – with Mrs Laing every Monday morning
first thing so don’t be late!
Creative Curriculum
Topic work – ‘What in the world is going on?’
The science focus of our topic will be magnets and
springs and we aim to make up a magnetic game
linked to our topic by the end of the unit. The
Literacy focus will be Emperor Penguins, linked with
topic work all about polar life. We will then
contrast polar life with desert life and look at the
causes and effects of global warming. Following the
children’s suggestions, we will aim to fit in as many
Art and D.T. activities as possible linked to the
topic.

Meet the teacher – Thursday 24th September
Friday Morning is normally my PPA – Mrs White
will be teaching Year 3 Science and
comprehension
Outdoor PE is on Mondays. As you are aware this term
outdoor PE will be swimming. It is very important that
children remember to bring their swimming kit every
Monday as it would be a shame for them to miss out. It
is also very important that children remember their
coats!
Indoor PE will be on Thursdays. Kit required: pale blue
t-shirt/dark sweatshirt, navy shorts/tracksuit bottoms
and plimsolls.
Reading - I would ask that children continue to bring
their book bags to school on a daily basis. Books from
the school reading scheme will be changed weekly on
Thursdays. Please continue to listen to your child read,
question them about the text and sign the reading
journal so we know that they have read their current
book and are ready for the next book in the series.
Children will also have the opportunity to take out and
change library books on Wednesdays.
Homework - Will be handed out on Fridays and I ask
that children return their homework on the following
Wednesday.
Spellings - Spelling tests will be on Fridays and I ask
that children practise these spellings during the week
to prepare for the test on Friday. The weekly spellings
are linked to spelling rules which we discuss in class. It
may be helpful for children to write sentences with
their spelling words or think of other words that follow
the same spelling pattern.
Tables –There will be a weekly tables challenge to help
children with rapid recall of the table facts.
