Dear Parents / Carers,

Welcome to Year 5! I hope that you had an enjoyable summer holiday. I want to say that I am very much looking
forward to working with you and your children this year. I have thoroughly enjoyed the last week and I hope that it
is an indication of what I can expect during the course of the year.

Like last year, all of the classes from Years 1-6 are continuing to develop their creative curriculum this Term. This
is more of a topic based approach to teaching the curriculum. Below are some details about what the children will
be learning during Term 1.

On Tuesday 22nd September from 3.00- 3.45pm, you will have an opportunity to come into class and meet me. I
will be holding a brief meeting in the Year Five class to tell you more about what will be happening this term. I hope

Topics this term Important Notes

Knowledge and understanding of the world
(Science, History and Geography)
Our topic this term is titled: ‘Home Sweet Home!’
During this unit we will explore subjects such as
evacuation, immigration, the slave trade and why
people become refugees. We will focus specifically on
the lives and experiences of children. The science
focus will be Habitats. Children will be able to
identify some local habitats; name some of the
organisms that live there and use simple keys to
identify organisms. They will also state the food
source of some animals; distinguish between those
which eat plants and those which eat other animals
and plan how to investigate some of the preferences
of small animals found in the habitat.
Creative development
Children will plan, design and then make their own bird
houses!
RE
During this unit we will be identifying the communities
that the children belong to, consider the qualities
required for a harmonious community and consider
what it means to be a Christian church school.
ICT Multimedia- Podcasting
PE
Invasion and striking and fielding games-children will
be coached by coaches from Surrey Cricket Club and
Fulham Football Club. They will also participate in a
range of team building activities as part of Outdoor
and Adventurous Activities.
PPA
On Wednesdays, Mrs Hoare will be in class for most of the
day teaching Year Five. This term she will be teaching
science and PSHE.
Homework
Written homework will be set each Friday by the
class teacher and is due back the following
Wednesday.
Maths homework will be set each Thursday by the
Maths group teacher and is due back the following
Monday.
Spellings will be given out every Monday and the
children will be tested on a Friday. They will need
to bring in their blue spelling book on both days.
Reading Books
Each Tuesday children will have the opportunity to
choose a book from the school library. They will
also receive a new book from the school reading
scheme on a Friday. It is very important that
children bring their books and book bags to school
on a daily basis.
Could I also encourage you to listen to your child
read and question them about the text at home?
Reading books will be handed out next week.
PE
Indoor PE-OAA
Monday afternoons
Outdoor PE –Football & Cricket Skills
Thursday afternoons
Kit required: navy shorts/tracksuit bottoms and pale blue
t-shirt. Trainers are needed on Thursdays.
Children are allowed to bring in their own handwriting pen
and pencil.
